I am sure it is possible that this has been brought up in another thread but with SWL coming to DL, does that not leave a particular star tour attraction in Tomorrowland that would be a much better fit for a GotG overlay.

There have been pretty strong rumors that more Marvel content beyond GoTG will be coming to DCA, so it makes more sense to put all the Marvel content there. I also think they want the GoTG content in pretty quick, and they wouldn't close Star Tours until after SWL is open.

The backstory is original. It may be based around The Twilight Zone, but the story behind the ride is original, if I'm correct, and wasn't a previous episode of the series.

Fair, and yes you are correct. The Rod Sterling intro is pieced together from other episodes. Though this may also have its own original backstory. I kind of assume it does, but we'll hopefully know more momentarily.
