Guardians of the Galaxy Mission Breakout announced for Disney California Adventure

My stance on Mission Breakout has been pretty consistent; the re-worked ride experience looks fun; what little we've seen of the interior looks interesting; the exterior looks like hot garbage and doesn't fit the rest of Hollywoodland; and Hollywoodland will probably be gone in a few years, so I hope it will fit when it become Marvel Land.

It might make more sense if they re-themed the area to be based on a town/city in Missouri. As many here know, Walt Disney has some connections to Missouri form having lived there for some of his life. They changed Peter Quill to be from Missouri in the movies instead of from Colorado like in the comics. This is similar to how they seemed to have changed the Ant-Man characters Scott Lang and Hank Pym to live in California (I believe somewhere in or near San Francisco to be more specific) at the time when most of the movie takes place. Seemingly Hank Pym's company was in California in the past and at the time when most of the movie Ant-Man takes place. Of course Tony Stark has a house in California in the movies, but I believe he also had that in the comics at some point.

If they changed the area to be the town in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, that seemed to be somewhere in Missouri
and got partially destroyed,
then that possibly would make the tower being nearby make more sense. Although, probably not enough to make many here happy. Maybe they could include some sort of transition from Missouri to the tower area that alludes somehow to the GotG movies, maybe even alluding specifically to how Peter was abducted from Missouri. Although, I don't know in the film that it actually states that town is where Peter lived at some point or nearby where he lived, but it would be unsurprising if either of these were the case.

They could make the general Boulevard area to be set in a retro time period like the 80s when Peter was abducted from Earth, the 30s to make it more similar to what the area in the park is currently like time-wise, or to a time period from when Walt lived in Missouri. I don't think they say where exactly the town is in the movie except that it's in Missouri, but they could say it's somewhere close to Marceline. Maybe that would be a bad move, though.

It might be appealing to make an area like this in the park to be based in a time period from before when most of GotG 2 takes place because then it would make some sense why some buildings would at least have different businesses from those that are seen in the movie and could conceivably also have some differences in appearance due to construction occurring in the town over time before the time period of the town as shown in GotG 2.

Apparently Peter's grandfather was going to be in GotG 2 at one point in the movie making process. Depending on how old he would have been in flashbacks, he is someone that could have been alive in the town in the 30's.

You can see some of the town they filmed in for the movie in this video and in pictures on various sites from when filming occurred:

The filming was actually in Cartersville, Georgia, not Missouri. You can see in the clip that there are train tracks that run through the town similar to how Sunset Boulevard has tram tracks. It has a movie theater right next to a row of other buildings similar to Sunset Boulevard. It also has an elevated roadway above the town that makes it similar to how California Adventure has the monorail running above part of it.

I can't remember how many of those features are actually visible in the movie except that I'm pretty sure that the movie theater can be at least briefly seen in the movie.

Edit: Then behind the tower they could possibly turn the area for parking into an area having to do more with Marvel stuff in space because people will have already gone through a transition from an Earth area to an outer space area. They could put more Guardians stuff, Ravagers stuff, Thor stuff, maybe even stuff from one or more of those, or something else.

If they put stuff based on Thor Ragnarok in that parking area and made the Boulevard area set in the 80s or 70s that might help them match up because based on the Ragnarok trailer, it seems like that movie might have somewhat of a retro feel to some of it kind of like what the GotG movies have had.

This thought came to me tonight while listening to 80's on 8 on Sirius when Hit Me With Your Best Shot came on...

Pat Benatar's early 1980's classic Hit Me With Your Best Shot is said to be one of the songs used on this ride. If the Disneyland Resort is about to open a new E Ticket attraction that uses the lyric "Before I put another notch in my lipstick case, you better make sure you put me in my place!" in the on-ride experience, then as an old fuddy-duddy who still wears a suit coat to dinner at Carthay Circle... I'm going to be totally okay with that.

In fact, I can't wait!

I do wonder if there were songs that were shot down due to content that goes too far.

Wether its a better fit or not, I don't think anyone wants to see a theme park land based on Missouri

There is a part of me that would love to live in a small town like that. After 50 years in LA/OC/IE, the time for change is getting closer and closer.

Yeah, why can't Disney use child labor?

Seriously, if Disney did this, between this and many other short characters, would WDW become one of the biggest employers of little people?
Hu, I was talking about.. THE SUIT, not the KID.

They could use very small people. And give jobs to people usually have a hard time getting jobs.

That is amazing!!!!!

But unfortunately, you can't force kids to work. And you'd need kids so it would be short enough to not be scary.

Why everyone is talking about the kids? I'm talking about the suit! just put a very small guy inside!

Anyway, to try to fix my point of that post.
IF a MOTHER of a KID who is a FAN of GOTG CAN BUILD a suit that amazing. WHY DISNEY CANT BUILD SOMETHING AS GOOD?

Well, haven't some people at least in the past complained that the idea of visiting a theme park that has to do with California isn't that appealing to some people who go to Disneyland instead of DCA because they already live in California. Having a part of the park that has less to do with California might help with that. Of course it could mess with the main idea of the theme park however. It could possibly require refocusing the main idea for the park to something else like the American West. Missouri has a significant history to do with western expansion of European-Americans in the USA's modern territory. It might require having some direct mention of that somehow in the area. Later changes elsewhere in the park could also reflect that change to the main idea of the park by having areas that have to do with other areas of the western region of the USA.

Maybe part of the Marvel area that could be built in the parking area behind the tower could be the town in New Mexico from the first Thor movie. The other park could be Asgard or somewhere else. People go from the planet where the Guardians are captured to some planet featured in one of the Thor movies and then to the New Mexico town close to the border of the park. Having a New Mexico town there could actually help it blend in with the Cars area if they wanted to create some way to go from the New Mexico area to the Cars area.

Having an outerspace area back there would make it similar to Disneyland after it gets a Star Wars area.

A different thing is they could keep the Hollywood Land area in general as being themed to be Hollywood during some time period, but have the road leading up the tower look like it's a film set meant to look like Missouri during some time period. This might require putting up a big painting or building in front of the road before one would come to the tower in order to block some of the view of the tower like one might expect to have on a film set. However, I would imagine that people would somehow need to be able to walk through the painting or building somehow or else walk around it somehow.

It probably would be an easier transition to the tower if the whole Hollywood Land area was changed to be a town where filming is occurring and the town is at least being made to look like a town in Missouri or changed to actually be a town in Missouri.

They could also make part of the town look like a place meant to look like a town in New Mexico and part of the town look like a place in Missouri. That would allow for more space for something else back in that parking area behind the tower while still allowing for a town more closely associated with the idea of the American west and maybe even California than a town in Missouri. This all gets more convoluted than having what is currently the Hollywood Land area have a more consistent appearance, however.

Additionally something interesting I came across that seems like a similarity between a Marvel movie and part of DCA is the shape of Ant-Man size changing technology, the dance party part of the movie, and Francis' ride.

I personally have no problem with the California theme. Wouldn't really care if they changed it either. I would just worry that those locations you mentioned might be to bland even with the presence of marvel characters. Although now that you've mentioned it, Changing A Bugs Land to an AntMan miniland to coincide with the marvel area might not be such a bad idea.

Joe Rohde said the following to the Los Angeles Times:

“There is a way in which Guardians of the Galaxy is almost an intrusion,” said Rohde at a small media walk-through of the in-construction attraction in January. “It's coming out of nowhere — kaboom! — into this space.”

“The idea that it would come out of nowhere — kaboom! — like a square peg in a round hole,” added Rohde, “is like the Guardians.”

Who knows how earnest he was being with his statements. Many people on these forums seem to think that what he said isn't something that he actually thinks is a good idea.

However I thought of something I think is interesting that could kind of connect an area in DCA to the tower area. An area that's supposed to be the Missouri town shown in GOTG 2 could be constructed. The area where the tower and this constructed area would use something that appears in the GOTG 2 movie. I think this could actually be in line with those Rohde statements.

I'll explain in more detail, but it contains spoilers for the GOTG 2 movie:

At least the street leading up to the tower could be themed to be the Missouri town shown in GOTG 2 or to be some street made to look like a town in Missouri for a film set. Before the street reaches the tower, the blue blob from the GOTG 2 movie could be constructed on the street. This could have a giant painting around it to help obstruct people's view of the tower. The blob could be either be made to be like the one from GOTG 2 or just some other blob from a movie that visitors are supposed to believe is part of a set from a movie that is filming on the street.

The blob could be big enough for a walkway to be constructed through it. The walkway could have a curve of some sort to it to help obstruct the view of people on the town side seeing to the side where the tower is or vice versa. This would be dependent on construction codes. I don't really know much about this stuff, but maybe not having a big straight opening would be a fire hazard or something.

Where the opening for the walkway comes out on the tower side would like another half of a big blob. It could look specifically like one of the blue blobs from the GOTG 2 movie. This could make sense in some aspects because according to GOTG 2, Ego the living planet caused blobs like this to erupt out of things he 'planted' into the ground on a large number of planets. One of the planets where he could have done this could be the one in which the tower with the Guardians is located.

It sort of doesn't actually make sense according to GOTG 2 however, because an aspect of the blobs where you can walk through one and end up on another planet is never depicted.

The blob on the tower side could have the other side of the large painting around it, but with different theming. Something interesting that they could do with the blob is to have lighting in it so that it would glow even if just slightly during the day and night. Although, if it's based on the blob on GOTG 2 that might not make much sense because I think possibly that blob stopped glowing after (without trying to spoil much of the movie) something happens in the movie.

This blob could cause a change to be necessary with the trolley, I think it would have to stop before it gets to the blob.

The idea of a big blob in a town has kind of a retro movie 'vibe' to it, but it isn't really a 20s or 30s vibe. So it still seems kind of at odds with parts of Hollywood Land that could said to visually like an area from then.

Also, this might have been mentioned earlier in the thread, but the tower the Guardians are in might appear in the Thor: Ragnarok movie, although possibly just as an Easter egg in the background. If it actually appears in the movie and not just the trailers, then the area around might be based on the planet that appears in the movie.

www.slashfilm.com/is-the-collectors-fortress-in-thor-ragnarok/

Also, if the whole Hollywood Land are got changed to be like different Marvel movie sets, I wouldn't be surprised if that House of Cards area got changed into a Dr. Strange or NYC area and maybe the Monsters Inc. attraction nearby changed to a Dr. Strange, Spiderman, or Captain America attraction.

I hope this stuff isn't considered off topic. I apologize if so.

Ummm...it used to be. There used to be children in the parades (especially Xmas)--I remember Michael, John, and Wendy jumping on a trampoline in the Peter Pan float. And back when WDW opened, the mice and ducks were little people. I don't know today's preferred terminology, but back then one would have described the mice as midgets (meaning they were proportional to big people) and the ducks as having dwarfism. They resized the characters 20+ years ago, but you can still see little people working in entertainment as character hosts and administrative support. I've spoken with a couple of them because I was curious about the shift. This is a complex topic with both good and bad elements. I would not presume to speak for their experience. The change in sizing shut them out of something they knew. But the company opened up it's thinking a bit about their potential beyond mere novelty.

There's no good way to make that thing make thematic sense. Tivan isn't even in GOTG2. He's apparently in Thor Ragnarok so I guess we'll need to see that for more information about his alien race. But as it stands right now, it's IP insertion plain and simple and it will take a whole lot of reworking for it to be anything more substantial.

Edit: Sorry, also: Its really a retrograde style addition where we've jumped back to the cheapest way to insert an attraction into a park without an actual environment to support it thematically, and with deep environmental storytelling. If you look at Star Wars land, they're doing that right. You couldn't plop Star Tours into it without changes because it wouldn't have the same look tone or sense of location and the actual films ST uses wouldn't work either because they jump eras and just are generally a mess.
So on one end of the property is Star Wars land, likely to be the greatest themed space in America, and on the other end you have a Marvel land that begins with an cosmic aliens tower of alien objects.
The same reason Star Wars land isn't made up of a Death Star spinner, a Hoth boat ride and a Tatooine moisture farming experience is the same reason we shouldn't have a tower in place of an actual cohesive Marvel land.
