So when GOTG:MB opens in May will it be located in Hollywoodland on the park map or Future Marvel Land / Super Hero City?

Can they call it Marvel Land on the west coast? Still confused about that.

It will be located in Hollywood Land because the apparent Marvel area doesn't exist.

Speaking of that, if "Super Hero City" or "Superhero Land" or whatever is the best they can come up with, then a new team will sorely be needed.

What's weird is they added Marvel to the Super Hero HQ at Disney Springs now. Dr. Strange made an appearance for a few days at DHS and I heard that some of the GOTG characters are coming WDW. Is this Disney's way to see what they can get away with?

Haha ya I know I that's my point. We ll have this alien oil refinery in Hollywoodland for at least 3 years.

Yes I agree, whoever is coming up with these names recently is missing the mark. It's still unclear to me if they can use the word "Marvel" on the west coast. I know they didn't use it for the Super Hero HQ they had at innoventions but then I think I read somewhere else that they had gotten that issue sorted out, on the West Coast at least.

This is the easiest and most complete explanation I have seen of the Marvel Contract from Orlando United. Lawyers got earn their money and makes things complicated.

That article is super helpful, but man that stuff makes my head spin.

So, basically, Disney gets to reap the benefits of Marvel cinematically, but Universal gets to then use those same characters willy-nilly in their parks to their own advantage.

Honestly, why was Universal's terminating their contract with Marvel NOT part of the agreement Disney made when deciding to purchase Marvel at all? Surely someone in legal foresaw a problem with this down the line.

Also, when Universal pays licensing fees for the use of Marvel, doesn't that money sort of go right back into Disney's pocket?

Probably almost exactly that. Dr. Strange and GOTG fall just outside the realm of character families that Universal has rights to...as for the Marvel name, my guess is, its not an "attraction", so Disney is once again testing their limits.

Only Universal could make that happen and why would they? The merchandise is the real cash cow on this deal.

Well, Uni can use the comic book versions of the characters, not the MCU versions. And Uni can’t take extreme liberties with the characters, like making Captain America a female villain or something.

Why would Uni terminate? And I doubt Marvel was in a position to buy out Uni from the contract, but that doesn’t mean Disney can’t or won’t (someday).

Yes, Disney gets paid by Uni.

Uni wouldn't terminate...its to their financial advantage to keep it, not to mention, to lord it over Disney to a point.

I just wonder what would have happened if this same thing had gone down with Star Wars.

Essentially, Universal (or whoever) could have built and operated Star Wars land, and the best Disney could do would be to utilize Admiral Ackbar in an area called "Space Fighters".

Disney Springs is not a theme park, so the contract does not apply.

Not all Marvel characters are covered by the Universal contract. Doctor Strange and the Guardians in particular are not included, and fair game for use within the WDW parks as a result.

I think problem was Disney had already dragged its feet (since 2009) with getting anything Marvel in the parks, so we have a re-theme instead of something purpose built.

Purpose built would of been ideal. It just reeks of tackiness to shoehorn another IP into a building that was very specifically designed for another concept. Should of been a temporary overlay until Marvel Land was built. Would that not of accomplished all the same synergy goals and getting Marvel into the parks quickly?

Indeed. I know a lot of people hate Paradise Pier, but at least everything is cohesive and consistent there.

"Monstrosity" is a good word to use. The juxtaposition will be so painfully obvious. Leaves you wondering how exactly this got a pass in the meetings. It just doesn't make sense.

The actual property aside, I feel like they couldve chosen something better for the facade that would at least be less obtrusive than what we have rn. Theres tons of retrofuturistic motifs that they couldve pulled from that would at least be a bit more fitting for the area around it rather than orange paint and pipes.

I am curious to know (though I doubt we ever will) how much of the Uni contract discrepancies played into their decision to not get something Marvel-related up and running until now.

Im wondering if its still "Marvel Studios" or has it just gone off to its own land with literally no connection to DCA

Cars is an incredibly popular franchise and the kids that saw it 10 years ago will be sharing it with their kids 10-20 years from now. Peter Pan, Snow White, Mr. Toad, Pinocchio, Alice...all franchises that are very, very old but still popular with old and young. Not that Cars is on the same level as Star Wars but SW remained very popular during the period it was pretty much out of the public eye (beyond books and comics) and continues to be one of the biggest (if not biggest) franchises out there.
This and the fact that you don't have to even know what "Cars" is to enjoy the land.
