You're moving so - often quite quickly - so there is a ride aspect to the... well, ride.
You're boarding a ride, exiting a ride when it's over.
You're playing the game in direct competition to your seating companion, while in effect sharing the experience with other riders.
There's a pace to the whole thing that a stationary game can never come close to.
Plus, there are wind and water effects.
One of my sons plays some video games that have amazing graphics and deep stories.
I marvel at how good the images look, but have no interest in picking up a controller.
Yet I have a blast riding/playing Toy Story Mania with him, my other son, and my wife.
I'd imagine there are many, many adults who feel the same way.

Yes!!! My wife and I love TSMM so much that when we had APs in 2019, we made sure we had an FP for it during our planned HS day and also for departure days. It was so cool to stay at Pop, take the skyliner to HS just for TSMM, have a blast doing it, then skyliner back to Pop before our drive home to Georgia. On another trip we were staying at POFQ and we checked out, drove to HS to use an FP on TSMM, then drove home from there. Yeah... we might be a bit addicted to TSMM.

There definitely are, which is what I said in my original post. I know lots of people enjoy it.
I just don't really understand it because the whole experience is terrible to me. I wouldn't waste time riding it even if it was a walk-on.
Glad to hear it, one less person in front of us when we go on. I have never been on this ride and didn't enjoy it. Makes one feel like a kid again every time. Every person I have ever joined with to WDW has always said the same thing. And now we get to enjoy it with our kids.

Back on the topic of this attraction, it would be pretty cool if they used some aspect of it in GotG 3, if it works with the story. Like some plot point takes place at the pavilion, or even at Mission Breakout, in the movie. Yes, I’m asking for more synergy, so maybe I’ve lived long enough to see myself become the villain. But there’s one takeaway from the MCU, it’s that synergy can be used to elevate storytelling when done well.

While there is not one "at home experience" that can completely capture all of TSM's elements, if you take each element seperately, you can find an equivalent. Motion controlled shooting and targeting can be found on all of Nintendo's consoles since the Wii (not to mention the fact that Toy Story Mania was actually released as a video game on many platforms). The up close visuals provided by the 3D can be found on the Nintendo 3DS, and similar up close experiences can be found with VR and AR. That leaves you with a moving car and 4D effects, both of which can be found in other Disney Attractions.
This type of attraction is likely to impress older generations that did not extensively grow up with at home video games, but unlikely to impress the younger generations that did. We are long past interactivity and video games being a gimmick themselves. It is now just another medium to tell more interesting and complicated stories.

I like Toy Story Mania, but I am dismayed that it spawned so many pale imitations at other parks. After the fiftieth "get in vehicle - move towards a screen - shoot at things on the screen - repeat ten times" ride, the ride type isn't exciting anymore.

This style of ride far predates Toy Story Mania. Screens and 3D are the "new" portion, but lots of parks had attractions where you approach targets and shoot them. Seems like that trend really got rolling in the late 80s and 90s.

I'm pretty sure the op means they've never ridden this and not enjoyed that ride (they don't mean they've just never been on the ride, which is what I assume you think?).

What they mean is "Out of all the times they've ridden it, they've never had a bad ride" or "I've never been on this ride and not enjoyed it"
Admittedly they didn't word it that well.

Yeah, but rides like Buzz Lightyear and Men in Black don't just park the ride vehicle in front of the targets so you can shoot 'em.

One crux of a good attraction is how it uses a combination of things to create something better than the sum of its parts, and your argument probably explains why I love TSMM. The competition, interactivity, and movement together are absolutely delightful IMO and make it the favorite attraction at the resort among many in my family including this young lad.
He likes it.

Thought I would just throw this in here. James Gunn (GotG Director) has said he has still got to work on footage for a Disney Parks Ride.
Looks like Taika Waititi and the Guardians Cast never filmed the attraction footage whilst they where together in Australia for Thor Love and Thunder.
Still could be quite a while off before the ride is even done now since filming of all the Guardians stuff is not until later this year in London.
