Lifestyle is a really stupid word anyway....

George Carlin said it best:

"If you want to know what a moronic concept 'lifestyle' is, technically speaking - Attila the Hun had an active outdoor lifestyle."

My daughter came home last year (her senior year) and said , "Mom! Guess what? Max came out...he's not gay, he's straight!!" Had I known, I might not have let her stay out with him all night after Junior Prom!

George Carlin is great... he has great ways of saythings how they are... my favorite...

"Some people look it as a glass that is half empty. To others, the glass is half full. To me... the glass is twice as big as it needs to be!"

Well I just can't believe that your MUM called you that - I mean I can understand her being in shock and all that, but that seems a bit too much to me.

I'm so sorry that your mom is having such a hard time dealing with this. I'm sure she will come around, she just needs time to figure things out and realize that you are still the same boy she has always loved.

My father is gay and I know it was really hard on him to come out to my sis and I. Finally, I actually outed him since we were sick of waiting around for him to get up the courage. We had a great talk about it and in the end he sat there bawling. He was afraid we would hate him! I couldn't imagine how hard that must have been for him to carry that fear for so long. I think our relationship is stronger now than it ever was, because there are no more secrets. I hope you and your mom will reach this point soon as well.

I also wanted to share a little insight that I got from a friend of a friend when she found out about my dad. Her reaction was "As long as you don't plan to sleep with him, who cares??!?" I couldn't have put it better myself.

Good luck to you and congralations. If you ever need to chat, you know where to find us.

BTW - I hate that F word too! Shame on her for using it!

orlandouk, it sounds to me like your mom reacted without thinking first at all - she may not have intended to hurt you, but just said the first thing that came to her mind, awful as it was...I hope she comes around after she's had a chance to realize that you're the same son you always were.

Good luck, and I hope things work out for you and your family.

Not all of us do. I've been working at a motorcycle shop for about 8 years and nobody knew until about two years ago. You just get to a point where you can't take the jokes and comments anymore. Imagine being black and listening to jokes about colored people day after day.

As far as coming out to your parents, that's a such a personal and difficult choice. I've come close to telling my parents several times, but each time some news item comes up, and I get treated to a lengthy dissertation on 'those people', and I shut right back up. I have a great deal of respect for people who can come out to their parents, or to anyone else for that matter.
