Frozen

One could only hope, but now I am worried. I have a feeling Mandela's death might have had more to do with this than the actual song itself.

If I heard correctly the winning song, like most of the nominations, is only heard during the credits. I wish the category were for songs sung during the movie.

I actually expected 'Please mr kennedy' to win although I was hoping for 'Let It Go' of course.

'Ordinary Love' winning was a big surprise on the box office forums I'm on.

Frozen had a better then expected weekend and next weekend will improve a little because it's a holiday weekend.

Winning a Globe... even if the competition was weak, should add a little to the attendance.

I heard the academy was voting on changing the rules so the best song had to be used in the film not the credits. I wonder what the outcome was?

Recently a friend sent me a link to a website with the entire movie posted for streaming. It's wasn't a hack job, but a clean digital transfer. How can something like that happen? I was dumbfounded.

Oscar screeners. You can find Frozen, as well as every other contender online.

I FINALLY saw this movie today. It was good, no doubt, but the best since The Lion King? What? No. I can name multiple films I felt were better than Frozen.
Out of curiosity, which ones? For me the biggest "rivals" to match Frozen from The Lion King upwards would be Tarzan, Lilo and Stitch and Tangled. Mulan would also cut it if Mushu wasn't so annoying and completely throw off the tone the first act of the film captured.

It's funny, I picked all of your choices as well, especially Tarzan. I was also was thinking about The Princess and the Frog, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, somewhat Pocahontas and even Hercules. I think people hyped Frozen up too much for me.

For me, P&tF falls flat on its face just because the music is so forgettable and I can't help but be all cynical about the PC 'tude they take with it. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for black leads in animation but it felt like a gimmick, unlike in say, Lilo and Stitch / Pocahontas, where it made sense to have the characters be non-traditional and non-Caucasian. Hunchback, sadly, has those irrelevant gargoyles that drag down an otherwise epic feature. I'll give ya Hercules though. I always laugh when watching that one and the animation design is unique and a real stand-out in my opinion!

I disagree about P&tF's music, I think it's one of the best aspects of the film. Speaking of music, I really enjoyed the music in Frozen. What do you mean by PC attitude? Sorry, I don't really understand lol.

I actually like the gargoyles. They don't intrude too much. Hunchback destroys Frozen on storyline and music, alone. Those are biggies for me. Yes, Hercules is great!

It's difficult to pin point my feeling, but generally speaking I just can't help but watching the movie with the feeling that it was a product of producers wanting to score headlines of "Disney being progressive with black characters" instead of the characters naturally serving the story at hand. The messages about hard work were great, and it was an interesting era to focus on, and Disney handled well a delicate subject matter of black people serving as second-class citizens to white people, but was the classic fairy tale setting absolutely necessary to tell the story? Not for me personally, and in my opinion the movie would've soared had they opted to go with an all original tale of a young black lady working her way to reach her goals and overcoming set-backs.

As for Hunchback, I have my own "cut" of the movie which excludes the whole A Guy Like You sequence, which improves the flow infinitely! :D I guess I just wish they had the guts to stick with the more dramatic elements all the way through instead of resorting to the typical sidekicks. The music is also terrific (aside from A Guy Like You). I guess for me personally it comes down to Elsa's character hitting really close to home for me. I see a lot of myself growing up in her character so I find it hard to disagree with this movie being one of the best since the second golden age.

Yes, I understand where you're coming from. I was upset she had to be a frog for the majority of the time, and since Disney always has to pull from another story for the princesses, I wish they had chosen another story for Tiana.

I'll admit I don't really like "A Guy Like You", either haha. Hunchback is pretty dark and depressing, so I guess Disney needed comic-relief characters, and so we got the gargoyles.

I loved Elsa's character, and she has to do with the problems I had with the movie. I was looking for some sort of explanation as to why and how she got her powers. There was no explanation, and it left me confused. Another thing, she's absent for a pretty big portion in the movie. Anna is everywhere. I was more interested in Elsa and I wanted to see more of her.

Well her father says to the trolls she was born with it, which kinda helped them play the metaphor that it's part of who she is, she didn't develop it or get "infected" with it so there was no way to rid of it. I know an earlier draft had her powers be something that was part of a prophecy but (gladly) they ditched that. I definitely agree I was left wanting more of Elsa but I took it as a good thing. Sometimes less is more, and the distance surrounding her kept her interesting for me.

True, but I wish they had gone deeper into the story with her powers. Speaking of the trolls, I wanted to know what their purpose was. I wish we could have learned more about them as well. Elsa was still interesting, no doubt.

And how does Facilier get his voodoo powers? The trolls are the magical shamans in the story.. many have them, you just accept their magic/position predates the current character's predicament.

Facilier's powers come from dark Voodoo spirits called Loa. Loa is a Haitian Voodoo that is thousands of years old, and alters the characteristics of nature, or controls it. Dr. Facilier even resembles one of the spirits, Loa of the Dead, AKA Baron Samedi.

Not to mention we know of the talisman that holds Facilier's powers. If that breaks, he would no longer have power. We're given at least some background of Facilier. I'm just saying it's nice when a background is given, that's all.

More specifically, it's possible that the Loa he serves are either the Petro or Petwo Loa (often thought of as "evil" Loa, but more accurately "hot" or "aggressive"), or the Ghede Loa, the Loa of the dead, who's colors are black and purple and include the above-mentioned Baron Samedi.
