Frozen ride replacing Maelstrom?

Malestrom going away isn't the only big change coming to this pavilion....

You know I have never understood the sentimental attachment to the attraction. The ride itself is quite nice with unique features. And any attractions in World Showcase are welcome additions. But the storyline is just not that memorable. And it should be.

I could agree with that, if it was done correctly. The challenge would be maintaining the balance between cute and culturally accurate, particularly given that Frozen really doesn't represent Norway in any real way.

I hate to say this but I know a lot of people support the Frozen overlay but I fear for it. I loved the Mexico boat ride but now I just find it silly (not say that Donald and gang are bad) but I just can not take it seriously. While I think Frozen is a fine movie - I worry that the cultural aspects of the ride and even more so the movie will be so animated that it will become the Mexico boat ride.

I agree. I've said before that the Mexico ride, at least, still references Mexican culture and locations, as well as references to fun things to do in Mexico. It's silly, but at least it still maintains some level of integrity. Heck, there's even a map of Mexico at the end of the ride. Either way, the Mexico ride already has its flaws, so we definitely don't need to copy that model and apply it to the other countries.

The Frozen thing would be more difficult to keep on that same level because about the only way to ensure accuracy would be for Olaf to be taking us to visit the nearby country of Norway, rather than making it look like the land is his home. That wouldn't be as obvious and repeated as often as the whole "searching for Donald" thing... at least without being choppy and redundant.

Besides, how many versions of It's a Small World do we really need?

Well, at first it was (with the weird bobble head doll characters instead.) But people complained that there weren't any characters. I think people felt this way because EPCOT is in WALT DISNEY WORLD and there is a bit of an expectation that you will see Disney characters in WALT DISNEY WORLD. Otherwise you could go to any major metro area, visit the museums, restaurants, and ethnic areas of the city to learn about cultures, OR you could go to that country...justsayinsall.

Seriously though, if seeing Disney characters in a relevant setting (Donald, Jose, Panchito, or Elsa and whosewhats) cheeses you off then don't go to WDW, it just isn't your cup o'tea.
I think most people would like to see a Mary Poppins attraction in UK, a new frozen ride in Norway, and a Ratatouille restaurant and attraction in France...it is Walt Disney World.

It didn't used to be that way before management went all poo poo. And it's not just that easy to just not go anymore. The soccer team that I support is owned and ran by money men and idiots. Do I just stop being a fan and stop going to games? It's more complicated than that.

Exactly. Even if every person who is active on these boards quit going to WDW, I doubt Disney would even notice because of the sheer volume of people they see each year. It would take more than us not going back for Disney to feel a pinch. I'm not sure what the right answer is, but boycotting Disney would be about as effective as boycotting Walmart.

Nothing wrong with not giving your money to companies you don't like for whatever reason, but I can't help but laugh when people talk about voting with their money as if they are going to send Disney a message by getting enough people to join their efforts to lower attendance. I wish it would work that way, but I don't see it happening. Not with the number of people who go yearly who are pixie dusters, first-time guests, people who haven't been in years and don't remember what it used to be, or people who don't do their research before going. I'd wager that a good chunk of visitors each year fall into one of those categories.

We finally went on Maelstrom on this trip. Although it was enjoyable, when the boat stopped my wife looked at me and asked, "that was it?"

I can see that the smallish ride and short movie combined help cover Norway's culture just fine. For a Frozen ride, however, it would deserve soooo much more than an overlay of that ride, even with state of the art animatronics. Frozen should be in Fantasyland IMHO. It deserves it's own land with an amazing E-ticket dark ride. Maelstrom should stay the way it is.

Oh I fully agree with you there. The Mexico Ride as it stands now could be better, but it could be much worse. It's not something I'll go out of my way to ride over and over again, but it works for what it is, at least on some level. I still say, though, that if the idea TDO has in mind for overlaying Maelstrom with Frozen is to model it after what they did with Mexico, they're missing a big opportunity to do better elsewhere and to ensure that the cultural integrity of the Norway pavilion as a whole is not compromised. It's one thing to have the Three Caballeros in Mexico. It's something else entirely to take characters that are not meant to be from Norway and have them represent Norway as if it's their home.

And don't start with moving IASW again, It's starting to become a running gag like the weasel in America sings
