Obviously I cannot criticize the musical talent of Lin Manuel and his ability to write catchy tunes, but I found Encanto to be plagued with an unlikable protagonist, a rushed story, and an illogical conclusion. If Encanto ends up taking over Tarzan's Treehouse, so be it, but I don't see the appeal. That said, it was still better than Raya and the Last Dragon and I've not seen Wreck It Ralph 2, but I'm sure it was better than that, as well.I dunno, I thought Encanto was the last great Disney movie, but I guess YMMV.
In fact I would say that an Encanto themed area would fit just nicely in the Motor Boat area.
So just remember you heard it here first if this comes true.
I haven’t seen Raya or Ralph 2 yet, but regarding your Encanto criticisms, I agree. There was a lot of buildup with no adequate conclusion to wrap the story up. It peaked and then it abruptly ended. I’m still unsure if I understand what the moral or lesson of the story is.Obviously I cannot criticize the musical talent of Lin Manuel and his ability to write catchy tunes, but I found Encanto to be plagued with an unlikable protagonist, a rushed story, and an illogical conclusion. That's kind of like arguing if Plan 9 from Outer Space or Manos the Hands of Fate was the better movie.Obviously I cannot criticize the musical talent of Lin Manuel and his ability to write catchy tunes, but I found Encanto to be plagued with an unlikable protagonist, a rushed story, and an illogical conclusion. Raya was an absolute dud, Turning Red was spectacular, Encanto was cute, but tremendously disappointing. The first Ralph was so cute, I couldn't bring myself to watch the second one for fear it would be ruined.I haven’t seen Raya or Ralph 2 yet, but regarding your Encanto criticisms, I agree. Raya didn’t look interesting to me from the trailers. Once I started hearing the reviews, I knew I would be in no rush to watch it. Same with Ralph 2. I can’t bring myself to watch it. I don’t think I’ll ever watch that one. Maybe I’ll watch Raya when I’m really bored. Haven’t seen Onward either, but I’ve heard it’s good. I’ll get around to it.Raya was an absolute dud, Turning Red was spectacular, Encanto was cute, but tremendously disappointing. I actually think I might agree with you. It’s on stronger “hero’s journey” footing, rather than just being a subversion of a typical fairytale romance like the first one was.Just gonna quietly drop the hot take that Frozen 2 > Frozen and back away slowly from this thread.
I've heard that from MOST people, tbh.Just gonna quietly drop the hot take that Frozen 2 > Frozen and back away slowly from this thread.
I agree Encanto was just an excuse to go from song to song but that is what most musicals are. I think that one ranks slightly higher than Xanadu.Encanto passes the bar for plot structure, a low bar when one considers that for most of musical theater history, plot is just an excuse to go from one song to another (it even is a house full of doors like the sets of most ensemble farces). And since the music is terrific, and the message is family-affirming, I call it a win.
But none of the other recent animated films are as good, in my opinion, even if the plots are more cleverly constructed.
Anyway, I just don’t care about Disney anymore. I’m going back to work listening to the Howl’s Moving Castle score again.
Hey! Don't disparage my beloved Olivia Newton John and the classic Xanadu....I agree Encanto was just an excuse to go from song to song but that is what most musicals are. I think that one ranks slightly higher than Xanadu.
@BuzzedPotatoHead89 for one thing. @Rich T in this very thread. I distinctively remember more users claiming they'd never touch Mr. Toad on here.Who is “everyone?”
Yes, I'm aware. My point exactly.Again, nothing is 100% safe.
Don't disrespect my Xanadu like thatI agree Encanto was just an excuse to go from song to song but that is what most musicals are. I think that one ranks slightly higher than Xanadu.
Just like to point out that though I dearly love Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, the only reason I think it’s currently safe from being Frozenized is for purely logistical reasons. It’s tiny and shares its structure with Alice In Wonderland’s top floor. If Toad goes, Alice goes.Am I the only one who never liked Frozen? At all? I've always believed its success to be undeserved. It was nothing more than Disney attempting to repeat the success of Tangled, with Anna and Kristoff being blatant retreads of Rapunzel and Flynn and Sven being a desperate attempt at making another Maximus. I like Olaf and that's about it.

Stop that. Encanto is a fairly brilliant film (but I gotta say, like a lot of folks, I didn’t like it until a second viewing. Once you know nothing “exciting“ happens, you can just kick back and enjoy all the wonderful character work and the way every line of dialogue links, foreshadows and/or elaborates on what’s really going on with that family.)I agree Encanto was just an excuse to go from song to song but that is what most musicals are. When Mr. Toad goes is when Pan and Alice and sizable portions of Fantasyland likely go as well. Unlike at MK Toad shares too much space with these other rides and would be very difficult to replace/gut without impacting the footprint of these other two dark rides.@BuzzedPotatoHead89[/USER] for one thing. @Rich Tin this very thread.
