Just a side note.....
I'm pretty offended that I have friends who are getting laid off and fearing for their jobs and the company turns around the next day and gives away free dining packages.
That just sucks IMO.
Well Dave, it could be worst. Disney could not offer a discount for that time period and more of your friends get laid off because people don't visit.
I feel like I'm helping people keep their jobs by going to Disney this year. I could skip the free dining and stay home
Seriously! I think that your priorities are all wrong if you're "offended" that they're trying to remain viable as a business. I'm in the auto industry...in Michigan...hanging onto my job by a thread and I am in no way
offended when the automakers offer more and more incentives so that they can maintain positive cash flow and consequently stay in business. That's how business works, and like Computer Magic said, your friends could
all lose their jobs if Disney isn't seeing enough volume on their bottom line. You
and your friends should appreciate the fact that Disney is doing what's necessary to maintain business rather than just closing the doors like a lot of businesses are doing these days.
Again, like Computer Magic said, it's people who are
going to WDW - whether they're getting Free Dining, Annual Passholder rates, 10% off T-shirts, or WHATEVER - that are keeping things afloat.
Furthermore, I think that it's safe to say that you are relatively "local" to WDW from what I've read, which might make it difficult to understand what people are facing right now who otherwise might not think twice about booking a vacation. This means that, for you, it doesn't take $350+ in airplane tickets, a day and a half of round-trip travel (=vacation time at work), or $64, $99, $149, $249, or whatever a night in hotel charges to visit WDW. Obviously, people are reluctant to spend that kind of money with the way that the economy is (which is a large part of the reason why the economy
is the way it is). Needless to say, an enticing offer like "Free Dining" (which, we all know, doesn't
really cover everything you might need to eat in a day's time) may be just the thing to make the difference of someone plunking down the cash to make the trip, or to just stay home. That $1500-?? per family that is riding the fence is what WDW
needs to keep things going.
