CoP is great! My kids (5,7,9) even wanted to do it more than once last trip. I am 34, and I think we are probably just starting to hit full stride with the "WDW Nostalgia" thing. People who got to go to WDW when they were young (7-16yrs old, maybe?) some 20-ish years ago now have their own families and want to share that initial feeling of wonder and excitement with their own kids. That may be one reason why we are starting to see some of the old "style" of Epcot return. Besides possibly realizing that it was BETTER architecturally (and other ways, in my opinion), I'm sure that people in management, marketing, etc. see this trend out there...

If you think I'm smoking something, just look at some of the recent movies: Transformers, GI Joe, Inspector Gadget, Speed Racer (ugh), etc.. All of these things were popular in their 'original' form when I was young (late 70s, early 80s--same time as the opening of MK and Epcot, right?). The parks have been around long enough now that there is only going to be more and more nostalgia associated with them... which means that it may become more difficult for WDW management to decide what stays and what goes...

Personally, I LOVED Swiss Family Robinson (the movie) as a kid, but the treehouse (especially WITH kids) just seems like drudgery. It's a climb up stairs when you're already tired--for next to nothing! You can't touch things, you don't ride things...

Have not been to Tom's Island, but I don't really see why kids would need to know who Tom IS to enjoy the island. It may deepen their appreciation, but I don't think it is necessary. Hope to make it there this Dec.

I think a successful park will keep some classic attractions (CoP, e.g.)--especially if they don't take up that much space (Jungle Cruise would be a good example of a "tired" attraction that takes up a lot of space)--while also introducing new attractions (that, ideally, would inspire the next generation and, in 20 years, will be the nostalgia that they want to introduce their own kids to).

So, getting back to the OP, if I had to pick one, I'd say refurb/remove the treehouse, BUT I think there are much better 'targets' out there than the three mentioned in the original post...

Do we really need Splash Mountain when we have Pirates? They are both flume rides.

It's all about the themeing.

We could have both and nobody would be any wiser about the attraction mechanics since the theme would be so drastically different.

Actually Pirates is mostly a boat/dark Ride, with one small, but creative, flume drop to access the actual show area. No one goes on Pirates because of the Flume drop... they go on it for the swashbuckling good time with familiar and funny pirates.
Splash is a true flume ride with great theming.

No, he would not have removed Main Street. That was his nod to the past. However, when it came to the attractions, he wanted them to be appropriate for their location and theme. The Tiki Room was hugely popular when it first opened. The Swiss Family Tree House tied in nicely with the movie of Swiss Family Robinson. He wanted live animals for the Jungle Cruise (and had to settle for animatronics). Many of the rides at Disney don't do anything but move you from point A to point B past a series of scenes...Walt Disney wanted those scenes to be the ride...and if the scenes were to be about the future, he would want them to be current. Since I don't know how popular the COP is with the average guest (maybe it's just popular enough to justify keeping it), I won't say it SHOULD be removed, but it would definitely need to be more accurate to today. Or they perhaps should re-theme Tomorrowland to the future of yesteryear...since that is more closely to what it is (and unitentionally so).
Actually the theme is intentionally "the future that never was".

I was referring to the ride mechanics more so than the ride experience.

The best thing i think they can do is actually add more nostalgia... granted bring in new animatronics updated sound that sorta stuff, like the upgrade to HM. i think a great move for disney would to restore the Tiki Room to it's original state and rename it "Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room" put his name and do the same with the Jungle Cruise.... Put his name in it... soon enough they could be considered historical places, which makes it sound really old. but let's keep these things around and alive there were innovative and still are among the best of there kind in the world.

My personal choice?

While I have no real use for any of the 3 attractions I mentioned, I would dump the Tree house. I have never once been interested in what it beholds, in my 11 years and almost 100 trips to Disney. Even my children have no use for it.

Its not that the attractions mentioned are bad, its just that they don't interest me at all.

Don't let nostalgia, in its many forms, delay progress.

I have to go with Tom Sawyer & the speedway. both take up alot of useful space. as for the treehouse. i would not care if that was gone either. but it does not take up much space but yet how much space behind it could be used? COP. although i have not been on that in over 10 years, just can not get rid of that one period. I wish they would refurb it though. maybe next year we will try it again. how about SGE. come one 1% of the people like that attraction. bring back AE
