For those of you like me that are not close to WDW which do you prefer? I hate flying and am terrified of it but I live in NJ and it's a 23 hour drive to WDW. As much swim afraid to fly the flight is only 2 hours and I don't think I would drive again.

What about you guys?

Gotta fly. I mean, if you drive thats sort of wasted time for me that I could be at Disney.

I dont like flying really either (though I have no fear or anything like that), but I put up with it. I have to fly for business as well so im slowly getting more used to it.

It would take me about the same amount of time to drive and it would to fly because of having to stop in Atlanta and so forth. Which means, I always drive 4 1/2 to 5 hours. It isn't that bad of a trip.

I've done both and personally I love to fly! So much quicker and more convenient. Of course, getting a road trip together to go to Disney is lots of fun, but also being originally from N.J. I remember those trips, and eventhough they were fun and memorable- they were loooooong! Now living in Nashville its still a 10 hour drive or so, but we definitely wanna get there and start enjoying the fun. Fly, get there, and have a great time!

I live in Pittsburgh and have about the same drive, although it only takes me about 17-18 hours. I've only flown to WDW twice. Both trips down had connecting flights and had to sprint through the airport to make the flights. The first time on the way back, just as the plane was going down the runway almost up to speed the pilot throttled back the engines and proceeded back to the gate where they held us hostage on a hot plane for an hour and a half while they fixed the "air conditioning" so they said. Having said all that, I'd still rather fly, but, sad to say, if I had to pay for 5 people to fly, we'd have to take the trip every other year because we wouldn't be able to afford it. The simple fact is, for 5 of us to fly would cost $1500 and to drive at April 2008 prices was a mere $450 (If I were going today it'd probably be around $300).

We always travel during the school year and leave after school/work on Friday. We drive for 2 hours or so and stop for dinner. Then we drive for another 2 hours or so and stop for a "final" bathroom break. The kids'll usually change into pajamas and settle in for the night. Then I drive all night. I'm a night owl anyway, so this is not that big of a deal for me. When the sun comes up usually in Georgia, my wife (who can't drive in the dark) takes over and I catch some sleep until we stop for breakfast.

I have to admit though, the trip down is no big deal, but the trip back is greuling, for 2 reasons. 1, check out is 10AM and now I'm stuck driving all day with everyone awake. 2, it's just not fun to leave WDW. "There's no place like home" just doesn't apply.

The only fear I have of flying is the cost. From Chattanooga I would only save about 3 hours by flying yet the cost of 4 tickets plus a rental car would pay for a week at a moderate resort.

I've only flown down twice, our honeymoon and Dec 2006. I'd rather drive. I know that flying is quicker but I love being in the car with my kids and hubby. We spend lots of time playing games and just talking. We plan on leaving as soon as the kids are home from school. We'll drive all night. We've done it before. We add it into our vacation time so it's not a big deal.

we flew once and drove once. I hate flying too - I feel so sick on a flight. When we flew we were living in NJ. Now, from Pittsburgh it was about 17 hours total time and I preferred that, but it is hard to base your opinions on someone else. I am lucky in the fact that my husband gets 4+ weeks vacation each year and I am a SAHM, so we don't have to worry about coordinating time off, or really about how much we have. For us, driving isn't wasting anytime, and we spread it out. This last time, we drove about 1/2 way to my In laws in Charlotte and spent 3 days there before heading to wdw for 8 days, and then on the way home we did the same thing, stopping for 3 days to visit my sister. It was also much more cost effective for us, allowing us to spend more money in the parks if we wanted to. If we didn't have family to visit and if we didn't have the extra time off, I probably would probably deal with my ill feeling about flying just to get there quicker.

Figment,

Have the same FEAR problem you
do  about flying. But, I FORCE
myself for a two hour flight, over
15 hrs. behind a wheel at least 3
times a year to Orlando!

I live in the suburbs of Chicago and we always fly.
It's a 2 1/2 hour flight versus a 20+ hour drive.
I Love airports and am a people watcher so the airport experiance is always fun for me.

ALso: Disney transportation is awesome and best of all FREE so we never have needed a car.

So I say by all means Fly if it's affordable.

Ask your doctor for something to help you relax on the flight. That's what we have to do for DD, it's the only way she can fly without having an anxiety attack. Then fly, you'll get there faster and have more time for your vacation. :sohappy:
