First Black Disney Princess

I wonder whether the love interest (the prince) will also be black, or whether Disney will feature a mixed-race relationship? I suppose that was done in Pocahonta's - but would be interesting to see
great to see a black princess though

I was wondering that too.I wondered about people freaking out with Disneys Haunted Mansion movie how Eddie Murphys wife who was black being loved by Master Gracy who was white?

You know what, that never occurred to me. I can't remember it being a big deal - was it?

Harry Conick Jr. would have been cool, but that's just a personal opinion.

I just hope the actors are actually from the area. There's nothing I hate more than someone doing a southern or cajun accent badly. *cough**ghostrider**cough*

Oh that would be sooo perfect to have Harry Connick Jr. do a voice or some songs, LOVE his voice and with a jazzy feel and his thick native accent... perfect!

I posted this in another thread but here some stuff from wikipedia...

In February 2007, it was reported that Jennifer Hudson and Anika Noni Rose are currently top contenders for the voice of the film's title character, and that Alicia Keys directly contacted Disney's studio chief ________ Cook, telling him that she wanted the role very much. [9]
During the Walt Disney Company's annual shareholder meeting in March 2007, Randy Newman and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band performed a song from the film called "Down in New Orleans", while slides of pre-production art from the film played on a screen.

I wholeheartedly agree. The only song I've ever felt he made a decent connection with was "You've Got A Friend In Me."-- other than that example though, I don't feel as though he makes a good effort to really connect either. That's not to say it isn't OK "muzac", but it just isn't integrated very well between story, message, and emotional impact, IMHO.
I can't believe I'm going to chime in here in support of Randy Newman, but here goes. I've never been a fan of his performing abilities - I honestly can't stand his voice - but I'm convinced now that he can be an excellent songwriter. The two songs that have sold me on this are "When She Loved Me" sung by Sarah McLachlan in Toy Story 2 and "Hometown" sung by James Taylor in Cars. I think those are two very powerfully emotional songs that really do give us insight into the motivations of the characters, particularly "When She Loved Me." I once showed a friend of mine (who had never seen Toy Story 2) just the scene with Jessie recalling her previous owner while that song played and he wept like a baby!

Also, if given the choice between the overtly Broadway style of Alan Menken vs. Randy Newman, I would have to take Randy Newman. Broadway music in the last 30 or so years all sounds like Annie to me. Yes, I know Alan Menken has written the music to a number of now classic Disney songs, but he's just so showy. I just hope Randy Newman doesn't sing anything on the soundtrack himself. His songs are much better when performed by others.

Very interesting thread! I've noticed that little girls of every size and skin tone are way into Disney princesses. And from strictly random observation, I've never seen any correlation between a little girl's princess choice and the shade of her own personal skin. However, I think it is great that we're getting a "black" princess...as a not so little girl, I am way into the Disney princess thing and always want more.

Didn't Brandy play cinderella in a remake of the movie. And the prince was white. If I am remembering correctly.

From imdb.com:

Born in the Philippines

Another quote which made me think of Disney

Paolo's success has convinced many Filipinos that he is the next best thing to happen to them since Lea Salonga. In an interview, he laughs saying "I wouldn't put myself in the same scale. She's a star. I'm just a guy."

So no, Paolo Montalban is not white

As far as the movie is concerned, it sounds interesting. And I had never really stopped to think about the fact that we're missing a black princess, but it should be cool. We've had different ethnicities being represented in the movies, I think Latina should be next  :lookaroun

My question is whether Disney is making this in to tell a story, or if they're making this just to add an African-American princess to the line-up.

If the later, I consider it misguided.

This is exactly why I admire you.

Also, shouldn't you be in bed?

Was there this much controversy over Mulan? I know there was some over Pocahontas, but I think that was more about historical accuracy than racial issues.

Mulan is like..my very favorite Disney movie ever(and I'm old school..grew up on Cinderella). An excellent point...I don't remember a big hue and cry over the first Chinese princess. Of course, I might not be remembering because I'm older.:)

As to sticklers for history...in a text book I say keep it accurate. Not a fan of revisionist (sp) history. But in movies, well..why should Disney be held to a standard that is not upheld in say..a Bruce Willis franchise? It's a movie, after all is said and done.

I'm not trying to be racist or anything, but is a black princess as marketable as an other princess could be? If you look at the most popular princesses you have Cinderella, Belle, Ariel and Aurora. Jasmine is popular but nothing close to the three princesses I just mentioned. Pocahonatas and Mulan are liked but are probably the least admired by little girls. Just from this alone it seems like minority characters are popular, but not as popular as the white princesses. I think this mainly stems from people admiring people like them, and to little kids it's the princess that looks most like them. I hardly ever see "black princesses" at Disney World. This makes me wonder how marketable this character will be to little girls that aren't black.

I think Disney knows this but they can't justify not having a black princess with as long as their princesses have been around.

I never thought Bell and Mulan were princesses. I know they are always associated, but they weren't born into royalty nor did they marry someone who was royal. I know the beast lived in a castle, but he obviously didn't rule anything but his own castle. I always thought that was funny just because they aren't really princesses. Cinderalla also wasn't really a princess until the end of the film. I get what they mean, but I just find it funny.

I think this will be a good princess addition for Disney. This must be the first Disney film with a real princess in it since Aladdin. Cheers! :king:

Beast was prince of his kingdom. While I don't believe there was a wedding in the movie, it's implied that Belle marries Beast.

Mulan is given a honary title of sorts by the Emperor of China at the end of the movie, so you could stretch the meaning to make Mulan a princess.
