My Only Hope is that the story is Traditional in its story telling - like classic fairy tale stories - and not pop-cultured/R&B, eddie murphy-esq - Think it's absolutley great to see a black princess - but please let's keep it classic Disney please.

I wonder whether the love interest (the prince) will also be black, or whether Disney will feature a mixed-race relationship? I suppose that was done in Pocahonta's - but would be interesting to see
great to see a black princess though

No - he will be an European Prince. - not surprised - set in New Orleans - I thought she'd be Croele or bi-racial. Sad that Disney has YET to show a black male in ANYTHING - even when they did the Cinderella story. I guess a black male can't be "charming". They could have at least showed the Prince as bi-racial - not European.

Launchpad; I'm not trying to be racist or anything, but is a black princess as marketable as an other princess could be? If you look at the most popular princesses you have Cinderella, Belle, Ariel and Aurora. Jasmine is popular but nothing close to the three princesses I just mentioned. Pocahonatas and Mulan are liked but are probably the least admired by little girls. Just from this alone it seems like minority characters are popular, but not as popular as the white princesses. I think this mainly stems from people admiring people like them, and to little kids it's the princess that looks most like them. I hardly ever see "black princesses" at Disney World. This makes me wonder how marketable this character will be to little girls that aren't black.

I think Disney knows this but they can't justify not having a black princess with as long as their princesses have been around.

Your not "Trying" to be racist - but your being just that. Do some research on Hasbro sales of Black and Hispanic dolls – if you care about marketing? BRATZ have flourished financially on this marketing. Making a variety of hues - almost killing Barbie. If you make characters available in appropriate areas - she will be well received. And there isn't a "black princess" in Disney because all of the characters have been white. Who cares about who is the most popular - the parks are themed around Cinderella in WDW - and Snow White (in DL). Those are your most popular. In DL Jasmine is VERY popular because of the show (in California Adventure). The Princesses are as popular as they are advertised and presented - PERIOD! Disney does a good job at film making, so I'm looking forward to this story, not so crazy about the non-black Prince - especially since this was done when Brandy did Cinderella with the Asian Prince.

TRUE STORY: In 2003, my family and I went to a Cinderella Character Breakfast. My Daughter then 3, looked rather confused when Cinderella visited our table. I said, Jamilah, this is Cinderella - my daughter just looked at her and said, no she's not, Cinderella looks like that lady in Kmart. Cinderella totally in character, just smiled and took a picture with my daughter. I asked her what she was talking about (in Kmart). She kept saying that lady - that brown lady. About an hour or so later, It came to me, Brandy, was a spokesperson for Cover Girl (I think) and she was referring to her picture in Kmart. At that time, my daughter had NOT seen the original cartoon of Cinderella - so in her eyes - a Princess was black!!! Children do notice color - and this Princess addition with be well marketed - I know she has my money all ready!!! I'm sure they will put their best foot forward (hopefully) with this character. Also, on another Disney message board, this lady mentioned that when her daughter was younger she asked Cinderella where were her braids – referring to Brandy. Exposure this new Princess to your daughter – and trust me – she’ll love her, just like all the others.

I think the princess is lovely, and having Randy Newman score a movie set in New Orleans is perfect. I'll be first in line when the movie opens in theatres.

On the subject of BRATZ...have you noticed the ways these dolls are dressed and marketed? I don't allow BRATZ in my household, and for the specific reason that even the "baby" version is wearing half tops with their diapers. And, specifically regarding their commercials, referred to as sexy. If I saw a real 2 year old wearing a biker jacket and a diaper, I would seriously question the parents values. If I were Black or Hispanic, I'd be pretty not happy if this is how major toy manufacturers perceived me. Everything I know about moms, regardless of ethnic background, tells me that we don't want our kids to aspire to this. So BRATZ can kill Barbie in the market, but to what purpose? I actually despise Barbie too, and believe me, there is a constant battle in our household as to what she sees on tv (my fault, too much TV) and to what she can have.

O, Good Lord, I just fell off my soap box.

Happy to see traditional animation coming back.

Hope it has a well thought out story and nicely written characters, rather than it being a case of the suits looking for a marketing opportunity to sell over-priced outfits and plastic tat to a new demographic.

I agree with you-- those things drive me insane. They are marketed at far too young an age group.

Back to the princess news, I think it's long overdue, and I am excited, both for that and for the return to 2D. :sohappy: I hope they do it justice.

Oh, right, the topic! :lookaroun

I couldn't agree more...I am excited on both counts. Can't wait to see it. :sohappy:
