Like the new layout but, like most, I am not super thrilled with the white background. I can get use to it but would love an option if possible.

Full width dimmed is marginally more bearable, but the background is still just too white; it hurts my eyes. And it needs to have a sans-serif font; my favourite is Verdana. I think there is *potential* here, given what Steve has already improved upon today, but we're going to need more colour schemes, more font options, better definition between where one post ends and the next begins, and dare I say it... I think the overall look of the forum now is very "candy"... remember when Apple OS X came out and everything was in-your-face bright aqua "candy" looking? It's fluffy. I prefer a more simple, business-type forum layout, no frou-frou. Which is funny because in real life I wear neon turquoise eye shadow and hibiscus flowers and peacock feathers in my hair. :D

And I'm glad to see that I'm a "Well Known Member" now. :p

Great update overall... certainly makes the site look more professional and more modern. Here are my two suggestions:
  1. Make the dimmed view the default, I'm sure you can tell from the comments here that the default white theme isn't a big favorite :)
  2. Something about having the pictures next to the thread lines I think clutters things up too much. I feel the forum listings would flow better either without those pictures, or having the picture be related to the post and not the user who posted

I would prefer an option to allow the avatar to be above the post as opposed to beside it.

Glad you like the update overall.

1. I think we've had about 20 or so members not liking the white. It is certainly not a majority. Many large sites use pure white as their background, such as Amazon, Apple, Engadget, Google, LA times, NY Times etc. - so white is certainly the in-color right now with web design. The use of styles certainly gives people the option to move away from that if they choose.
2. The avatar next to the thread breaks up the text, and gives some visual interest, as well as making it easy to see who has started the post. It would not be possible to associate an image with each thread, as there is no way to know what the content of the thread is, and match that to an image.

Fair enough. Ultimately time will tell what people prefer (and of course, most people hate change, so it will be a while before those people get over the initial shock and more practical changes are discovered

Personally, I think the images from the old system ("Question", "Info", etc) were cleaner and more informative than the small avatars. Of course, they can also be more stylized like the thought bubbles next to the forum titles.

But like I said, great upgrade and I'll get used to whatever it ends up looking like.

The problem there was that so few people actually used them. I think I, and a few others were about it. I would like at a page of 20 threads, and if we were lucky, 1 would shave the "info" tag.

Usernames really are too small in the user block though... for instance when looking at Steve's post..

There are 4 lines of text.. with the username buried in there. For a normal user... the username is blue on a blue background. It really lacks contrast.. even 'member' stands out better than the username itself.

The 'Moderator' tag has great contrast over the blue block and with black text. The username portion is just getting lost with the blue on blue. I really have to hunt to see a user's name. I think this forum's design is to rely on avatars as the primary ID for people... but I would really like to see the username be much easier to see.

The style change never sticks for me. I change it to liquid dimmed and it stays that way until I log out. When I log back in, it reverts to the default style.

I've already mentioned returning to the blue color scheme from before, and so have many other posters, but I have a new suggestion: make the line separating the post an signature more prominent - you can barely see it, and I keep reading sigs as part of the post.

Also, maybe a line separating the "info" and Like and Reply links for when the user does not have a sig.
