Fantasyland Expansion Officially Begins

Interesting. Not sure why they would go to that much trouble. Easier to tweek the plans.
Moving it south/southeast would put it awfully close to the Speedway, and put the squeeze on Pixie Hollow.
More free room to the northeast into that area where that path to TL is.

I'll take a close look at the plans when I get home to try to sort that out.

Or let's shorten Speedway again...I don't think many people would notice...

Talk about an attraction that could use an update

That's why you put several more, and new dark rides on the spot. :D

I wouldn't mind that in the least. It just seems the Speedway has achieved a sort of "legendary" status that makes it sacrosanct to any future planning at MK. Not that I've ever gone on it (stupid DWI laws).....

I don't see why...there's nothing special about it, save for the fact that it's old.

I think that's part of it. You know like I do that quite often the older a ride, an attraction, heck even a person gets, the more vaunted and adored it/they become. Like its cousin in DL, the ride appeals to the young and old both with a combination of its age and the sense of nostalgia it offers. I've never felt it for the ride, because at our height riding it was never an option for me. But I could also understand the point of view of those for whom the ride is a connection to their past.....

Lord, I now need something for my coffee. And it ain't Splenda.....

A small Jason Garcia update:

Disney picks general contractors to run Fantasyland expansion

Walt Disney World has picked a pair of construction firms to lead an overhaul of the Magic Kingdom’s Fantasyland section, the biggest-yet expansion of the Orlando resort’s oldest and busiest theme park. Disney has hired Barton Malow Co. of Southfield, Mich., and Birmingham, Ala.-based Construction LLC as general contractors on the Fantasyland project. They will oversee the work alongside Disney’s own Buena Vista Construction Co.

Disney expects to break ground on the project this spring. Plans call for a major new ride based on The Little Mermaid, an expanded Dumbo ride, and elaborate sub-areas devoted to some of Disney’s most popular princesses, along with new restaurants and shops.

With Universal Orlando’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter scheduled to open in a matter of weeks following more than two years of construction, Disney’s Fantasyland overhaul would take over as the largest construction project in local theme parks.

Disney says it expects to open the expanded Fantasyland in stages, beginning in 2012 with the Mermaid ride and the princess attractions. A second phase, anchored by a Pixie Hollow area featuring Tinker Bell and other Disney fairies, will open in 2013. Disney has dubbed the new area of Fantasyland “Fantasy Forest.”

Both companies selected to be general contractors have Orlando offices and have done extensive work in the area.

Barton Malow’s local projects range from Lockhart Middle School to baggage carousels at Orlando International Airport. ’s local projects include Thornton Park Central, the condo-and-retail project in downtown Orlando, and SoDo, a larger condo-retail project south of downtown.

A day at Speedway:

CM: Welcome Racer, for your safety, NO BUMPING
Guest: Ok, no bumping
-Guest Drives Off-
-Guest SLAMMS into car infront of her, causing it to jump track-
-Cast member runs out with a jack to put it back on the track-
CM: I thought I said no bumping
Guest: Who dat go bump?

I really think the Speedway needs Fastpass. I get why it's there. I recognize it takes up quite a bit of valuable space, but I don't see them removing it.

Noooooooooo! Stand-by is long enough as it is!

And in all honestry, they could easily reduce the footprint of the speedway in half if they just had a better layout for the track; and while they're at it, make it electric.

Let's take the whole thing out entirely...:lookaroun:wave:
I wouldn't miss it.
Way off topic, but.....Yes. That.
Bulldoze the Speedway. Put in Aquatopia, it would look fantastic in that space. While we're at it, put Stormrider in there, too. They could both fit, if reconfigured slightly.

Tell me it wouldn't be awesome....

Maybe not as good as some new meet and greets......

Anything from DisneySEA is good in my book. ;)

Would add some great aesthetics to the back of TL, too.

I also wouldn't be averse to this little thing called 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
