Do you actually see the tiles from far off? Are the pictures showing humanity? Does the structure and layout of LAL evoke any ideas or connotations of people?
Not to me. I see large slabs of marble bracing up a feat of engineering, with poor quality pictures of people who wanted to buy into a time capsule.
You know where I see humanity, the future, PEOPLE? The SSE Mural. THAT works. That shows people of all times of all races, all working for a common goal.
And on top that, it looks classy. Dry and depressing granite/marble does't do it for me.
...I understand your objections, but I also think you're overanalyzing this.
In fact, I think I am UNDER analyzing. I'm not looking at the meaning here at all. I'm looking at how ugly the things are.
To LAL, I am referring not to the literal sense in which it displays the ideas or connotations of people just by looking at one at a distance. Yes, it showcases the past. But it does have that connection with the past and present. I like to think of it as a sort of film. The opening credits are LAL and the past, the present is showcasing FW and WS, and the future is what was displayed. That's all well and good, and I wish it could be perceived as such. But, as it stands, the execution totally cancels that out.
Yes, I do believe the SSE mural shows humanity in a better light than LAL. Yes, the 1982 EPCOT was better for that. :lookaroun But it’s now. Ideas and thoughts have changed. Solar energy, for example, was something new then. Now a number of countries are regularly using it. Robots that could cater to our needs is today known as automation. So?! EPCOT's changed but the mural is still there. It's still relevant, it still works, and it still LOOKS GOOD. LaL? Not really.
You believe the execution was a little off, and one would prefer to have the empty and wide-range flower beds. But it doesn’t really clutter up the entrance if a little more thought was given to it. Remove some of the emptier stones. Space it out more. Trim the trees and return the florid entrance bed. Heck, even replace the brown marble with a silver tone and add the EPCOT logos to them. While you say they are “dry, depressing granite/marble”, try to picture in a positive light. And if it’s true that the plaza will be renovated in the future, well, I already accept it. But those tiles better not be permanently removed from EPCOT. That would work. Silver and green plants look nice together.
Meh, still feel LAL is relevant. :lookaroun
Remember, there are more changes from 1994 that are 100 times worse...
. But those tiles better not be permanently removed from EPCOT.
Did the LaL program come with a contract stipulating the minimum time they would be displayed (10, 15 years), like the walk around the world bricks? If they were to remove them, when is the soonest they could do it?
I am not fond of them, though there are worse things that I would change first. If they were to do something about it, maybe it would be best if they simply transferred the images to a display that was easier on the eyes, didn't hamper traffic flow, and opened the area up a bit.

It's my understanding the contract just guaranteed that they'd be there for x years, not that they'd be required to remove them after that amount of time. After the contract expired, they would no longer be bound by the contract to keep them up.
However, I've read on VisionsFantastic in a post by user Mr. EPCOT that a technicality in the contract allowed the pictures to be posted somewhere else that wasn't on the monument itself (like a computer display), so I'm assuming the Leave a Legacy structures can go the way of the dodo at any time, it just depends on when TDO will implement the new plans for the plaza.

I heard 50.I *think* it had a 10 year lifespan, but a little evil voice is telling me that it is 20.
Found this:
http://www.floridareview.co.uk/walt-disney-world/leave-a-legacy-at-epcot.shtml
"Note that you had to sign an agreement that you could not wear anything with a logo or symbol (no Nike baseball caps!!) and that you accepted that the sculpture might be replaced or relocated within Walt Disney World at any time and that after 20 years (2020), it may be permanently removed."
I have found a couple other places that corroborate this as well. I hope that they can be moved, otherwise we will be waiting a while.
(and 2010 was such a nice round number too )
