I'll be the first one to wipe a tear and light a candle for the EPCOT of old. What happened there between 1982 and the early 1990s was tremendous. It was better than anything else that Disney had ever done or will ever do! We will likely never see anything of that magnitude again. It was the high water mark for Disney, and really for theme parks in general. (My opinion, and I'm sticking to it!)
Those days are gone now. The newness wore off and less people were coming to visit. So the place got "Eisner-ed" up to get butts back in the park. Test Track, Mission Space, Soarin and (sigh) Nemo are drawing folks in. As much as I hate to say it, those things kinda saved the park.
We all mourn Communicore, WOM, Horizons, TLS (with or without mamoties), JII and WOL. But it seems they are lost forever. Most people just go to the park now and say, "hey, look! something new and shiny!" Having no clue about the wonderful rides and attractions that once were. Sure its sad, sure we all miss EPCOT Center and curse the new lower case version. But times change, and so must we all. Don't think for one second that I'm not going to be wistful for the good ol' days though.
Ill leave you all with a good quote from a brilliant man that seems fitting for a thread like this. Its from Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Just substitute "Future World East" for "a steep hill in Las Vegas" and "fifteen years" for "five years", you'll get the point:
"We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark -- the place where the wave finally broke and rolled back."
