EPCOT Entertainment cuts

Just out of curiosity, why does Nova Scotia have such a strong Gaelic culture? I don't want to derail this thread but you really have peaked my curiosity about this.

We took a cruise to Halifax last year and learned a little about Nova Scotia. It does mean "New Scotland" and was original given as a land grant to Scottish settlers. It was also settled by the French. We visited the Citadel which is a fort that was built to guard against attacks from the US. The Scottish Highlanders had a regiment there, and the fort has been restored to reflect that time period. The docents wear traditional Highlander plaid and kilts, and they play the bagpipes throughout the day. Really a cool place.

Actually, we loved Halifax. We visited the Boardwalk and the Maritime Museum in addition to the Citadel.

(And I pre-emptively want to apologize to any Canadians here in case I mangled history a bit).

I will miss all the performers. We always ate and watched Mo Rockin. But they are not the same since their leader moved back home several years ago. The new group seems very authentic and will add to the flavor of the area. I have to confess I love world music, so... Have no idea what a lumberjack thrill show would be, but love Celtic music, and have an interest in the flag throwers in Italy. Won't be the same without Off Kilter and the Fife and Drums. I would have loved to seen them simply add to the line-up and have EPCOT be like it used to be in the fall -- filled with street performers, musical groups, dancers, etc. But alas.

My real question is this. We have planned a trip in late October and part of the schedule is to spend a couple of days just walking around WS and taking in the atmosphere. With the old entertainment leaving in Sept, will there be replacements immediately or will it seem empty in October? Anybody got any idea or info on this?

Well actually several of the OK guys came from bands in Pleasure Island, so a gig in the Downtown Disney area wouldnt be that far out of the range. I know the belly dancer does certainly that and quite well, but what other performance skills does she have? Until we answer that question I dont think any of us can make an educated guess as to what other venues she might be good at. My point is that if it can be done to one Cast member, it can safely be assumed it can be done to many more. Marie

Offering new performance rolls would not have resulted in the desired cost cutting.

According to the official Disney Parks Blog, the new acts will be brought in as they are ready but will not be starting immediately after the old acts end. I too would have loved to see many different acts tried out and then make an informed judgement as to what was working with the guests and what wasnt. Marie

So you can make the educated guess that all these CMs could be placed into new roles, but others can't make the educated guess that maybe there was no fit for some of them?

And you know what they say happens when you assume.

Yup. If there are any possibilities, those positions should be offered to them. Are they suited for those roles? I dont know nor do I know if they would want them or can take them as per the Equity rules that someone else mentioned. If you were being terminated from a job that you had with a company for a longer tenure and there was a job that you COULD do but it wasnt offered to you, wouldnt you wonder why especially when you were doing a good job in your previous position? So wait, you just confirmed that you and only you could make educated guesses on the situation?

You're letting your personal feelings cloud actual discussion.

I have lurked on this site since Avatar was announced way back when. I only started posting in the threads about a year ago. I must say that you can definitely learn a lot on this site. I've now learned about Nova Scotia, what pilings are, skin friction (in the construction world - there are other kinds we can't discuss here ;)), @PeterAlt has a monorail obsession, @ParentsOf4 most likely has a business or analytical degree if some sort, you shouldn't mess with @PhotoDave219, and of course, countless historical facts about WDW. Oh, I should state that I have also learned that @marni1971, @Lee and @WDW1974 really know their ****.

Nope I confirmed that I could see other options. If I can, with my limited knowledge I am sure that others can as well. I dont claim to be the be all and end all on this but I do think that other options could exist and they should be explored. Can you be so sure there wouldnt be any other positions for these Cast Members?? I dont like to see people losing their positions after so many years with no other options given to them. If that is my personal feelings clouding my judgment, so be it. Marie

So I'll ask again, where else is the belly dancer going to be employed at WDW?

Fact is, there may NOT be other role options for some of them. And yes we can make educated guesses on that.

Well, we know for certain she could be placed in any of the shops or restaurants in Morocco or World Showcase, or really anywhere within Walt Disney World. Whether she, or any of the other members of the terminated acts, are interested in a non-Equity, non-performance position with Disney is up to the individual, but the point remains there are CM jobs which could - and should - be offered to them.

LOL.

Strange enough that the Government of Nova Scotia has a webpage devoted to explaining that.

(I like to think of myself as Donald Brashear, circa 2004)

You know that for certain? Because several members stated that they could only be placed into other equity roles.

Based on what I was told, in another thread, yes.

You can only accept union performing gigs when you're in equity. Performers are free to take employment outside of the performing arts as often as they wish. The current Dolly Drew/ Flora understudy at Hoop is a paralegal by day, for example.

But I think the point we are making Tigger1988 is that you DONT know either. None of us are aware of what casting options these people have. I am aware they were NOT offered any other roles at the point they were told the bands would be terminated. Beyond that is speculation. I agree with CDavid. If there are full time jobs that are available, they should have first shot. If they cannot or do not go for them, that is a whole different discussion. Marie
