The sad thing is that the young fans are the ones he is trying to appeal to. Anyone who has gone through 3 or 4 of these bozos in their lifetime knows that they will fizzle out with time, because each time they release a new CD or get interviewed the shock value becomes less and less, or they have to push the envelope where even the most forgiving person will say "Ok...that's enough"
I have a problem with the degregation of women in general in today's music. There is very little (if any) skill in most of this crap floating around on the radio these days....Eminem is just the beginning and the start of a whole bigger conversation.
Eminem thinks he's a big man because he has his money and 15 huge bodyguards to protect him. He's smart to know he can say whatever he wants whenever he wants to get his headlines. The more trouble he causes, the more free publicity he gets, and the more the "rebellious" youth of today's America loves him.
Is Eminem talented? Yes. I don't like rap at all, and I have respect for the way he can make a tune flow. However, he takes that talent and parlays it with a masochistic attitude toward the world in general. I used to work at a record store and the only people buying his records were kids. Often time they would bring their parents in to buy it for them. I would not hesitate to step in and warn the parents about the strong lyrical content of the disc.
Sad thing is that most parents have such a strong belief that their children know to listen to music that's better than this, that they trusted this was a run of the mill artist.
I'm not alone in saying that this discussion makes me feel old. Mainly because I'm one of many that's been through this before, and knows he won't last forever, because he's a fad that will fade with time. Hell....even Vanilla Ice was popular once. I'm betting most of Eminem's fans are too young to remember those days. We're not out of touch...we're simply a little more in tune with reality than most of the younger generation.
At some point we all grow up and our tastes mature as we grow older and wiser. You start to realize that there is more to life than running around reciting lyrics about beating your wife and killing people.
Some day we'll look back on these rap lyrics and call anyone who listened to them idiots. This is NOT music that will stand the test of time.
I'm very close minded about this subject, so before you start up with an argument about why "It's getting hot in here - so take off all your clothes" is the greatest thing ever, remember that it takes a smarter man (and artist) to say something INDIRECTLY, than to be in your face.
Anyone can be a jackass....just look at me
