Ebay - COP DVD - "Closure"

The attraction has been open nonstop since October 2003. Crowds vary based on park attendance. One minute, you'll see a theater of 10. The next, a theater of 80. It's an attraction that almost constantly loads and often experiences variation in attendance throughout the day.

Don't know if CoP is scheduled for rehab. I CAN tell you that when I was in there (late Aug or early Sept.) while our show was in operation, I could see, to my right, a uniformed CM pointing up at the ceiling to a couple of Suits. They were talking loud enough to be heard, but not enough to be heard legibly. It did sound like he was pointing out "trouble spots." Then, 2 seperate times during the attraction, the carousel stopped in-between stages.

Nostalgia factor aside, the ride needs more than a rehab, but an entire rethinking. There are now too many decades-and technological strides within those decades-for the ride to really show progress. If memory serves, the ride jumps from the 50s to the not-too-distant future. No mention of the 60s, 70s 80s or 90s. Plus, the not-too-distant future home has certain "techonological advances" that already seem outdated.

I think the CoP really needs a complete reworking. Maybe every other stage becomes a combination of Animatronics and film montages that will allow us to grasp the advances of technology within 4 or 5 decades, and the final stage could also include a film montage that can be updated every year or two. But an attraction with the word "Progress" in its name should never feel antiquated.

I know I'll be riding it in February. Me and my dad love CoP. (Not to mention that he says he rode it at the 1964-65 Worlds Fair)

So I decided to ask one of these DVD sellers a question about why it's listed as "retired". Here's the response I got from the only one who would reply:

I have a friend who is related to the WDW Property Manager.

COP will be shut down after the 50th Anniversary Disneyland Celebration as the attraction is very old and Disney is unable to repair it.

COP only operates on certain peak periods at the moment…

Thanks,

Rob

Honestly, I don't believe "relative of a friend" deals like this one and they really ________ me off when they use it as a sales tactic.

The retired, limited edition, rare ploy is rampant on e-bay. I will on occasion buy a Disney snow globe off of e-bay and I have seen globes listed on e-bay as retired that were available on Disney’s own website. All we car really do is not buy from those who falsely list items.

Woody13,

Was the CP rehab listed on Disney's own website? If not, then how are you so sure? (or are the other 12 Wood'ys feeding you bad information from the grave  )

Same here...I never buy that friend of a friend kind of junk. If any info was leaked out by a CM it would not be released over Ebay. Grr...it just makes me grr!

I don't think that COP would ever go anywhere but in Disney. I have a vcr taped episode that the attractiosn from the worlds fair of 64 and Walt himself said that they would find a permanant home at Disney.
I agree the attraction needs to be updated to a more modern day tommmorow. It also needs to have seats and tiles repaced but it is a nostolgic Walt Disney classic. I think closing this ride would be an incredible let down to Walt Disney but also to the Sherman brothers who have contributed so much to Disney as a whole. This is one of the few places I can go in the park and feel the ideas of Walt Disney himself. Sounds corny I know but it is true.

Was this from a Disney special (Vault Disney)? Do you have the exact quote of what Walt said?

Thanks! :)

It's not corny! I feel the same way!

Someday, I would guess that COP will no longer be feasible due to the generational (60s, 70s, 80s,) gap and the technilogical challenges in maintaining the old technology and facilities. I think the best hope for the long range is for a complete remake of COP, ground up. I think that is the idea that needs to seep into the minds of the powers that be.

Wow the true nerve of some people! He responded to my response:

Dear Nick,

I personally do not want COP to close either! I have heard so many different “tales” of the fate of COP…

At one time, Disney was considering Monster’s INC replacing COP until the Pixar troubles emerged. Imagine that?

Walt’s Tomorrowland invaded by Pixar (Buzz Lightyear). I firmly believe poor COP will be retired and closed after the Celebration of WDL.

I am also aware of the politics of such a large corporation Disney Co. Since you are so concerned, I will be glad to remove the “RETIRED” description of COP but please wait until AFTER the auction is relisted as Ebay will not let me change a description since buyers have purchased a “multiple item auction”.

I am putting together a “Spaceship Earth” retirement DVD… you are aware that Spaceship Earth is going to be retired and upgraded right???

Thanks,

Rob

Rehab bound?

I was on CoP Monday and it looked fine. I even commented to the wife how the new fabric on the seating really helped the look of the ride.

As for 10 to 80 people in the theater it really depends on the timing of when you get there. It is a continous loader and if you miss the window as I did you don't get into the theater even if there was room. Remember there are four stages that are loaded and the load/unload chamber. When you are in a theater you don't see everyone that is experiencing the attraction.
