Dumb things heard and seen last night

Maybe you should be a bit more tolerant of the guests you serv.

Whether the OP meant it as a joke or not, why does anybody seriously care what someone does or does not know about WDW?? I have never been able to figure this out. I have a sneaky feeling many of the people that could pass a Disney history exam would have difficulty passing a high school civics or history exam.

Let’s be a little more kind and tolerant to the folks that may not have the knowledge we feel they should have, okay?

sorry it is a pet peeve of mine, i'm pretty sure i'm allowed to have them. and i'm pretty sure you have them as well.

Just because people call Magic Kingdom ..Disney World..does not mean they have no knowledge on it..or they are lazy...it just may be what they choose to call it.

Like I said earlier..I KNOW it is The Magic Kingdom..but I still call it Disney World because it is what I have always done since I was a kid.

This past trip I was on the phone with my mom..and she said what are you all doing today and I said going to Disney World..and she said..good make sure Maggie rides Dumbo...

She knew what I meant because it is what we call it and have called it for years.
I agree people will call the Magic Kingdom whatever they want. People need to relax people will call things whatever they want. I mean are people going to get upset if Someone refers to Disney's Hollywood Studios as MGM?

Probably..They do I think.. and I could really care less...;) because I still call it MGM..:)

I will always call it MGM.

If we tell our 4 year old we're going to watch Beauty and the Beast at Disney's Hollywood Studios she will have no idea what we are talking about. If we tell her we're going to MGM, she knows exactly what we're talking about.

Thus, it will always be MGM for me. And I don't care if someone doesn't like it. :lookaroun

Then there was the lady who told her friends to skip epcot because she only lasted one hour there before realizing that it was such a snore.

When I was little, I never liked Epcot. But it was much different then, then it is now. As I got older, I learned to appreciate the parks more as my love for WDW grew also. Next to MK, Epcot is my favorite park. I can dedicate a whole day there, even more than a whole day, instead of doing just a 1/2 day. Some people don't realize how much there actually is to see and do at Epcot. Now DHS on the other hand, thats a half-day park for me.

Back on topic...
I do correct people all the time when they say "Disneyland." Most of the time they are my friends or family members. When I hear people say bizarre things throughout the parks, we just smile and laugh amongst ourselves...we don't judge them for it. It's just humorous that's all.

These are the ones I am guilty of. MGM, Peoplemover, We call Maelstrom Norway, Muppets, and now that I think about it we always just say that we are going to disney. I have only been to Disneyland once and so it is understood amongst ourselves that we mean WDW.

I've posted this one before, but here goes..

I believe I was waiting in line at Splash Mountain at the time..

"Mommy, what is fastpass? Why are they passing us?"

"That's for handicapped people, baby."

:ROFLOL::ROFLOL::ROFLOL::ROFLOL:

As for the names thing, unless you're deliberately calling it a name for nostalgia's sake (EPCOT Center, MGM, MK as WDW because that's what your kid/you as a kid call(ed) it), I don't quite understand it. Is it really that difficult to understand where you are? If so, how did you get there in the first place? In order to get to a park from my resort via bus, I must find the appropriate bus stop. In order to drive there, I must be able to read its name off a sign, or type it correctly into Mapquest.

Further, If your navigational bearing is so bad that you think that, after entering "The Land", you could've arrived in the "golf ball" (which is a fair distance away and somehow that golfball now has clear windows), you're a nitwit--no two ways about it.

It would be no different than if I took a trip to California and somehow thought I was in Alaska. You all talk about being forgiving to folks who aren't as big of Disney fans as us, but if your relatives told you that story (mistaking California for Alaska) what would you think of them?

I can more easily understand thinking HM and PotC are based on movies since the truth here requires more research. I still think it's pathetic, but I know I put a lot more effort into all things I do than most other people. I know it will benefit me in the long run--you only get out of things what you put into them.

But I'm not complaining--my Disney experience is better because of these people. They're the ones who make FastPass quicker than the Pre-FastPass days, since they don't use it. They're the ones who go to MK on hard ticket event nights, wasting money. They're the ones not taking advantage of discounts, and generally, not being savvy or informed. Not just at Disney, but in all aspects of life. Thankfully, they often make it easier for the rest of us who are willing to put in due diligence.

It's the place's proper name... like someone calling you "Mark" when your name is "Trevor". If you're not angry, then you would at least correct the person.

What drives me nuts is when people act like Disney World and Universal are the same entity. I know people who say they are going to Disneyworld and then start naming Universal attractions that they can't wait to do. A few times I have been asked upon returing from my Disney trip if I rode some rollecoaster that is actually at Universal because they just think they the 2 parks are related or something. That drives me nuts...Get it right people. That to me is dumb.

"is this the attraction that mousemerf made a positive post about on WDWmagic?"

I'd be proud if I were mousemerf....:lookaroun

In short, I believe most of this can be attributed to laziness. It's not like the information isn't out-of-reach- people see names like "Magic Kingdom" on the road signs, the gate to enter the park, and on maps and merchandise. People choose to stick by their misconceptions without doing an ounce of research (if looking at a sign could be considered such!).

There exists travel books, a plethora of websites (like this one) and even TV specials to inform you. If you can't be prepared to do your homework for a vacation, you're going to be confused and ultimately disappointed, just like the man (as posted by yankspy) that believed SSE was a golfing attraction.

I understand your point. But you've got to consider that maybe some people don't want to do a ton of research before their vacation. It's their vacation, they can go about it as they please.

That's why patience is a virtue; plus there are tons of CM's around to assist them. As a guest, that's a burden I won't have to worry about. :)

i couldn't care less if people screw up names or places. What bugs me is when people are ignorant AND onboxious about it. The fat mom who wants to know when The Living Seas got rid of Shamu. The dillhole dad getting angry at the CM who has to point out that Jaws is not in DHS (or MGM for that matter). Teenagers who swear up & down Space Mountain used to have corkscrew loops (no, I'm NOT thinking about Rock N Rollercoaster, Space Mountain used to loop, ya calling me a liar???). And they won't accept any explanation that proves 'em wrong. That's what ticks me.

Ya know, it probably was a bit of a habit to call the Magic Kingdom Disney World for those who went there before there was anything more than just the 1 park. I don't personally recall ever having a problem with that transition but I can sympathize because I'm constantly correcting myself with MGM/DHS. It's a little more understandable than some of the other blunders.

My hubby's family and friends like to pick at us by intentionally calling WDW Disneyland. They think it's funny to get us into the spiel...Florida = big = World...California = small = Land... LOL!

I also call the the MK Disney World. My defense is, wasn't it called Disney World before EPCOT was opened. And I will always call DHS MGM. I dont think I could get use to saying disney hollywood studios, MGM is way better and easier to say, but that is just me. For some reason I also call Malstrom the ride Norway. I dont know why:veryconfu However I do hate it when people confuse universal with disney  & when they call WDW DL and vice versa. :hammer:why??!!:brick:

In principle, it's great the CMs are there and that they are supposed to (not to mention are PAID to) have an attitude of genuinely wanting to assist people. But unfortunately, it seems like more and more CMs tend to have this person's type of attitude...

sorry but as a cast member that is one of my biggest pet peeves is when magic kingdom is called anything from disney world to "that park with the castle you know disneyland"

Please. It's one of your "biggest pet peeves"??

I suppose I have a similar issue with spelling and grammar... most people can spell competently, yet have no care when typing on a forum, making life more difficult for anyone attempting to read their posts. But that is another issue for another time. ;)

Why would anyone want to study up, they're on vacation, unless they bother you directly while you are at the park, then i dont think you have any right to say people should do their homework.
When my parents took me as a child for the 1st time in 1993, they didnt do their "homework" and we got on just fine.

Wow! One of your "biggest pet peeves" and "extremely annoying"? Really? It's actually that big of a deal to you,...and you work in a job dealing with tourists who've paid a lot of money to experience top notch guest service (not to mention professionalism)? Has it occurred to you maybe you're not in a job you're exactly suited for?

I work in the education industry and meet people everyday who have developed a 'private universe' of knowledge. My job is to break them free of their preconceived falsities and direct them to the truth. Not in a belittling or condescending way, but one that is constructive and provides for future growth. With this in mind, I am concerned by those who continually insist on mislabeling locations or attractions, not from ignorance but just an obstinate resistance to change.

The shirt mentioned by the OP or overheard comments in the park most likely are just honest attempts, that fall short due to a lack of knowledge. They will learn.

But it is a disservice to those we may seek to help to not use correct names. "I would start my trip at MGM, then go to Disney World." would not provide good advice to someone visiting for the first time. You may know what you mean, but they won't find any signage or maps to help them there. You would want to be accurate, so they could enjoy their visit and you will not look stupid, and if you can think to use the right names in this instance, you can do it always. It might take a little effort, and an occasional slip up will occur, but it is part of progress.

If I ever have a problem with a students name I ask them what they want me to call them. I do that out of respect. I don't use nicknames unless the student desires it. Or only use it in private situations but not the classroom. Walt Disney World (WDW) contains the Magic Kingdom (MK), Epcot (EC), Disney's Hollywood Studios (DHS), and Disney's Animal Kingdom Park (DAK).
