Dumb things heard and seen last night

I think many of us with our big disney know-it-all ego's have, at times, looked at someone fumbling with a map on main street and thought to ourselves, amateurs. It is part of our nature to do so and it is harmless as long as we realize that we are not really superior to those people. However, at times this can be helpful. My last trip was a solo one and so I paid a lot more attention to those around me. I had many conversations with people that started with me helping them out with where things were and "what is this ride about" etc. I even had one group who appreciated my advice so much that they insisted that I accompany them for the day at MK and play tour guide.

I did the same thing a few months ago. I saw people who looked like they needed help or were a little lost several times, and each time I helped them (and received hearty thanks). It felt nice to help people, and maybe even spread a little bit of pixie dust (although that might sound a little saccharine, it's true ).

God bless the "Ignore" button.
I'm a odd kind of guy. The kind of guy that reads Family Circus in the newspaper just so I can get mad at how stupid it is. That's why I love these people roaming the parks, so I can get mad at them. It makes me happy.

I just realized how screwed up I am...

I think it's totally ok to come here and post "dumb" things we've heard. Hey, we're all Disney nuts and if we can't come here to let out our frustrations, annoyances, etc. then where can we go!?! It's because of our love for Disney that we notice these things in the first place.

Oh, and it bothers me when people call WDW, Disneyland too! I feel the need to correct them everytime! Maybe we should start a support group on here...

I almost never volunteer information, but I am ALWAYS mistaken for a cast member. Every trip, there are several times, usually at least once a day, when someone will ask me for help. Fortunately, I've been in the parks often enough that I can answer the basic questions about attraction locations or rest rooms.

Thanks a lot TubaGeek - Reading your post made me realize I can actually relate to that - and realize how screwed up I am too.

In short, I believe most of this can be attributed to laziness. It's not like the information isn't out-of-reach- people see names like "Magic Kingdom" on the road signs, the gate to enter the park, and on maps and merchandise. People choose to stick by their misconceptions without doing an ounce of research (if looking at a sign could be considered such!).

There exists travel books, a plethora of websites (like this one) and even TV specials to inform you. If you can't be prepared to do your homework for a vacation, you're going to be confused and ultimately disappointed, just like the man (as posted by yankspy) that believed SSE was a golfing attraction.

I suppose I have a similar issue with spelling and grammar... most people can spell competently, yet have no care when typing on a forum, making life more difficult for anyone attempting to read their posts. But that is another issue for another time. ;)

I learned something a little while ago, and that is that people who know that I am a Disney nut are a little intimidated when they tell me their stories because they are afraid they will use the wrong names and look like they don't know what they are talking about. I noticed that they started to go into less detail, and not tell the whole story, because I already knew about it and what could they possibly add besides proving they are novices? I realized that I should NOT be correcting them when they misspoke (unless it was a question for me), and NOT act like a know-it-all, and now most people will tell me their stories and I love it (I am in a public health care setting). So as much as it may bother me when they say they only went to Disney World, I'll just say, aww, you didn't make it to Epcot? It's a great park. Maybe next time! It really is more important to share the joy and magic rather than one-up them. It only makes them feel bad.

Just my $.02

I think that is it so funny when people say things like "the golf ball" for SSE, or make some kind of mistake while talking about Disney. I bet at one time or another we have all been there and done that. I sure didn't know everything that I do now on my first trip.

I also see people studying the park maps and just smile, as long as they are not stopped in my path. Think back to your first trip, did you know where everything was and the official name of everything? I sure didn't.:animwink:

I try not to correct individuals when they call Magic Kingdom, Disney World, but my husband hates it and always corrects his friends. I sometimes envy newcomers to WDW. When on Main Street and you see a guest staring at the park map, it reminds me of my first time to WDW in 1991 and how everything was exciting and new. I also visited Universal Studios for the first time since 1992 this feb, therefore I had turned into the inexperienced guest staring at the park map and I have to admit it was exciting not knowing what to expect from all the rides.

Fun2BeFree is right though....many people are lazy now more than ever when it comes to planning their trip. It may have to due with everything being done fast and easy online. Perhaps back in the day when one went to their travel agent, they were advised on where they were going for their vacation and given books, brochures and other information.

I know that wherever I and or my family go on vacation we research various topics so that we know what we are getting ourselves into.

I think alot of people go to WDW for their first time, not knowing crap about the place, thinking that Epcot is not even part of WDW, wonder where spiderman is, and then leave feeling tired, overworked, and stressed because they went during the rainy season to Disneyland Orlando near Sea World's Islands of Exploration :lookaroun

Isn't Epcot included in WDW? So technically, the shirts were correct! (Just trying to be kind this morning. . .)

I think his comment was directed more to the fact that they had both WDW and DHS listed on their shirt, but not Epcot. Point being, why put DHS there if it's part of WDW? If it is there, then why not Epcot?

Then there was the lady who told her friends to skip epcot because she only lasted one hour there before realizing that it was such a snore.

I remember when I was younger I thought that EPCOT was a snooze, but now that I am a little older its one of my favorite parks. I like to just walk around there. Plus I like some of the indoor stuff too especially when it is really hot.

One time I was at Magic Kingdom walking down Main St. and I over-heard somebody say all the characters are fake, they're just people in costumes! How little that person really knows :lookaroun

Just because people call Magic Kingdom ..Disney World..does not mean they have no knowledge on it..or they are lazy...it just may be what they choose to call it.

Like I said earlier..I KNOW it is The Magic Kingdom..but I still call it Disney World because it is what I have always done since I was a kid.

This past trip I was on the phone with my mom..and she said what are you all doing today and I said going to Disney World..and she said..good make sure Maggie rides Dumbo...

She knew what I meant because it is what we call it and have called it for years.

I always have a great time in Walt Disney Land...

I just don't understand why they have an All Stars Sports place, but a giant Golf Ball in EPCOT... wouldn't that make more sense at the All Stars Sports place?

I don't see what the big deal with those shirts are either... I like to let people know when I make it to Walt Disney Land, MGM, and Islands of Adventure while in the Magic Kingdom... if I thought to make up a shirt about it... I definitely would have!!!

I had that part figured out. As I said, I was trying to be kind. :)
