Yeah, but Disney toned down half of the ride to make it possible to still draw a crowd for an attraction that was scaring some people away from the ride. Closing the pool completely would not accomplish anything in that respect. Disney will just continue business as usual. The only way they could mitigate this issue is to build large fences around each pool (larger than AoA) and lock them with RFID pads so they auto lock after 8pm. And I just cannot see Disney going that extra mile for this.

That's just what I would think they would do. I always thought the no swimming after whatever hour it is was put in as a courtesy to other guests of the resort trying to sleep.

My two boys and I were at Wilderness Lodge last year when they were doing some training. We went for a swim in the morning and there were about 20 life guards at the pool. During the drills, there would be a life guard at each station on duty watching guests, life guards participating in the training next to each station, and about 10 in the pool pretending to be guests. After about 15 minutes, a life guard in the pool would slowly sink to the bottom. Once the person was spotted, the instructors would confirm it was part of the drill and the training lifeguards would go into action leaving the on-duty life guards to continue to watch the pool. After the rescue was complete, the did a quick debrief, rotated positions (including on-duty life guards) and 15 minutes later there was another rescue. I was impressed with the training but was surprised the did it with guests in the pool. I guess it added to the real world training since you had to scan the whole pool, not just look for a life guard laying on the bottom.
Yep, that sounds like what we did...except that we had to stay after-hours or come in early on inservice days. Not sure why they did it with guests around.

Horrible, sad story....

One poster mentioned/asked how a person could drown in a crowded pool and no one seemed to notice.

A few years ago there was a story about a crowded community pool (in New Jersey I think) where a person drowned, sank to the bottom and the body was not discovered for TWO days... So, things can happen right in front of you.

Let's hope he recovers -

Which pool are we referring to? And do you happen to know if any lifeguards were on duty at the time?
Hippy Dippy pool. I walked out to the scene. Disney employees and EMTs were working on the child. One EMT was on the stretcher giving compressions. The many people were at the pool. There were guests everywhere.

Just to clarify a few things here:

1.Lifeguards are usually off duty at all resort pools by 10:00, 11:00 at the very latest.
2.Technically, guests aren't supposed to be swimming past midnight, but that's not enforced.
3.Whoever asked how it was possible to drown in a pool with other people in it - I doubt it was very busy that late at night. It was dark. People don't pay attention to other kids. That's the job of the parents, which is what I'm waiting to hear about.

You are wrong lifeguards were gone by 8 pm last night. Disney will let guests swim at anytime in any of the resort pools as long as they are not being loud.

I would think it's the quiet pools that would be open 24/7. The Deluxes have pools like that as well, but the main pool closes at midnight.
I know all the main pools close no later then midnight at the deluxes. I go resort hopping often but I don't remember looking at any of the smaller pools except at WL villas which also closed early. I always thought that if I'm paying $400+ a night and I get back from the parks and wanna take a swim at 1am I should be able without issue. Just my 0.02

I know that at thepolynesian the main pool is open 24 hours a day. At theGrand Floridian the courtyard pool is always open as long as your quiet. Over at the Contemporary they will let you swim 24 hours as well. Disney will pretty much let you swim at any time as long as your quiet

I'm not doubting you on that, I'm just saying what the "Pool Rules" signs say.

Same goes for Saratoga, AKL, OKW, etc.

The life guards here now are walking the pools edge constantly. None are sitting only pacing back and forth in zones. Pool hours change in the winter. There are many suites walking about. Most guests have no idea.

That's not correct. If it were true, there would be a sign stating that. I do believe most of the resorts main pools have signs listing the hours.

The resort does have signs that list pool hours however they will let you swim at anytime. I'm on property right now and I can tell you lifeguards were gone at 8 pm last night and we still had people swimming after midnight last night despite it being cold
