Downtown Disney rumor

I hope the 10% that is not accurate pertains to the names. The Downtown Disney name was brilliant, immediately telling you what it was. Disney Springs wouldn't be a bad name for a new resort but for a major shopping area, it's boring. And where the name Pleasure Island brought inspiration of a fun time to come, The Landing does nothing of the sort.

Totally agree. "Disney Springs" does not evoke a shopping and entertainment district. I'm hoping it's just a working title for now.

So, given that they intend to change the name anyway... what name would you give the new shopping district? I would maybe go with taking the name back to Disney Village.

I'd like to see this as well. Perhaps have a model where the first two hours are free, and it becomes $15 for the day after that. Receipts from that day's visit can be deducted from your fee at the exit (and so if someone bought a $5 drink before leaving, it would only bring it down to $10, to prevent scenarios like Unkadug's above). Anything to allow transport directly from the parks, which is currently a horrible inconvenience for car-less guests.

I've never heard of a system this convuluted anywhere in the country. I can only imagine the madness on a busy Friday night, some minimum wage CM trying to add up three separate receipts to see if you spent $15.

There are two options, and only two, for a parking garage:

(1) It's free. Other than psychological discouragement--I'm telling you, suburbanites hate parking garages--same as the current parking model. Does nothing to effect people avoiding the $15 parking fee at the parks (a huge part of the current parking crunch).

(2) They charge, and probably validate and/or offer free parking to APs. Solves the parking all day problem, but discourages a lot of the current DTD "just going to walk around" crowd. (I don't for a minute expect you'll get validated for a Coke or a latte, I'd expect a $15 minimum.) Smaller snack bar type places and tchotchke shops will feel the effects.

Once again, it looks like TDO is trying to copy CityWalk without bothering to figure out just what it is about CityWalk that works. This is the West Side all over again.

How is this copying CityWalk? Downtown Disney was in place long before CityWalk. For me, there is nothing good about CityWalk either. I can't stand the place.

It has parking garages so clearly it's exactly the same thing! ;) maybe if we're lucky they'll put a Burger King in at DTD too! Lol. Ugh, no thanks! City Walk holds no appeal to me either.

I only like the hard rock restraunt at citywalk but its so expensive! Other than that there are no shops that appeal to me. At least dtd has some good shops

Downtown Disney District's parking fee structure works pretty well in Anaheim. Once the new parking is built, I eventually expect a similar type of system in place, likely tweaked to compete with CityWalk's pricing. We'll see.

Just a note...I wouldn't put too much stock in the "Springs" name yet.
It was attached to the project at one point, but I've heard nothing that indicates it will be the final, official name.
Has anyone?

A couple of things come to mind (especially as a DVC owner at Saratoga Springs)

1- Disney MUST find a way to run a bus to/from DTD to/from the theme parks to keep from too many people taking advantage of the SSR buses, especially at night on the way back from the parks. Hopefully the new parking will be a paying thing??? Heck, let's just build peoplemovers/monorails to DTD while we're at it :) lol

2- Disney Springs... don't care for the name

3- the walkway to SSR - NICE... but I would have put it more in the middle of DTD. Seems not to far away from the walkway that exists now but I'll take it

The "Springs" name sounds like they are trying to go for local flavor.

If they REALLY want local flavor in the name they should use the word "Winter" in the name.

Winter Haven
Winter Park
Winter Springs
Winter Garden

Winter Disney

If they added something behind Cirque du Soleil: La Nouba, or even just built a better path/new bridge (similar to the one that are putting in beside Rainforest Cafe - that I would guess that the boats must be able to go under) to Saratoga Springs on that side as well, it could be useful access to Downtown Disney from that side of Saratoga Springs, or even just possibly create a new running path (obviously mainly for morning use)

I would guess with Springs that they are playing off Saratoga Springs.

Quite frankly I think it's too big and modern looking at this point to be considered a "village" anymore. lol

BTW, I think overall the concept so far has my seal of approval (boy, it feels like a long time since I've said that about any of Disney's recent projects or rumors lol). This is what they should have been doing instead of closing PI and going through the whole Hyperion Warf travesty.

See I like CIty Walk. Obviously Universal Orlando is a much different beast than Disney World, considering it's a much more urban themepark with centralized parking, two parks within walking distance, and a retail area between.

Now the case could be made that Downtown Disney (land) is a copy of City Walk ;).

Both of them however aren't quite big enough, and get a little too crowded to make it a fully enjoyable experience.

Here's what I like about Citywalk though that I hope DIsney Springs (ugh, let's just keep Downtown Disney!):
  • A place for grownups to let loose. I'm sure Walt himself enjoyed some whisky after a long day. Places like the Adventurers club are awesome. Citywalk has a great system for it, the upper level is 21+ at night, and separate from the rest of the district.
  • Massive Parking Garages. We all know downtown disney parking is awful..especially the closer to Marketplace you get. This alone is going to be awesome.
  • Great restaurants. DD currently has some good dinning, but nothing that really stands out at me. Rainforest Cafe is something I was good doing....once.
Personally, if I was an imagineer (ah, one day maybe.. ), I think "The Landing" area (PI waterfront) would be an awesome place for a Paradise Pier / Old Fashion Amusement Park. Wooden Coasters, carnival games, indoor skydiving, dave & busters, something similar to The Great Wheel going up on I-Drive, and some more putt-putt. Make a true entertainment district. As I'm sure you all know, I-Drive is under going a MAJOR upgrade, with a new entertainment venue opening by point Orlando, fun spot expansion, upgraded landscaping to remove "ghetto" I-Drive between Universal Blvd and the Outlets, oh and Festival Bay is getting leveled and redone. I think Disney has a great opportunity with this redevelopment to capture the "Adventure" crowd that may spend one day away from the parks.
Anyways, should be interesting to see how this plays out! I guess the existing surface parking lots left behind are rooms for future expansion?

I'm excited for this. Maybe all the money they generate at downtown Disney could be used to add attractions to the parks?? Pay it forward ? Eh eh.. I can dream!! At least downtown disney will be a full day now lol
