See I like CIty Walk. Obviously Universal Orlando is a much different beast than Disney World, considering it's a much more urban themepark with centralized parking, two parks within walking distance, and a retail area between.
Now the case could be made that Downtown Disney (land) is a copy of City Walk
.
Both of them however aren't quite big enough, and get a little too crowded to make it a fully enjoyable experience.
Here's what I like about Citywalk though that I hope DIsney Springs (ugh, let's just keep Downtown Disney!):
- A place for grownups to let loose. I'm sure Walt himself enjoyed some whisky after a long day. Places like the Adventurers club are awesome. Citywalk has a great system for it, the upper level is 21+ at night, and separate from the rest of the district.
- Massive Parking Garages. We all know downtown disney parking is awful..especially the closer to Marketplace you get. This alone is going to be awesome.
- Great restaurants. DD currently has some good dinning, but nothing that really stands out at me. Rainforest Cafe is something I was good doing....once.
Personally, if I was an imagineer (ah, one day maybe.. ), I think "The Landing" area (PI waterfront) would be an awesome place for a Paradise Pier / Old Fashion Amusement Park. Wooden Coasters, carnival games, indoor skydiving, dave & busters, something similar to The Great Wheel going up on I-Drive, and some more putt-putt. Make a true
entertainment district. As I'm sure you all know, I-Drive is under going a MAJOR upgrade, with a new entertainment venue opening by point Orlando, fun spot expansion, upgraded landscaping to remove "ghetto" I-Drive between Universal Blvd and the Outlets, oh and Festival Bay is getting leveled and redone. I think Disney has a great opportunity with this redevelopment to capture the "Adventure" crowd that may spend one day away from the parks.
Anyways, should be interesting to see how this plays out! I guess the existing surface parking lots left behind are rooms for future expansion?
