Do you buy a guide book every year?

I just came back from WDW and had previously bought the Unofficial Guide 2007. If you were going in 2008 would you buy the 08 guide also? Does it really have that much more info and is it worth it? It doesn't seem like that much would change in a year. I know it's not that expensive but I just don't want to pay for it if there's no new stuff to read in there.

I buy one every trip. But recently we've only been going every other year or so. (We like to travel to different places as well!:)) If anything, it's fun reading for the plan ride over!

I love the guidebook and all, but I would not buy a new one if you have the 2007. There of course will be a few changes from year to year, but I don't think you need the new book.
I just bought my 2008 because the last one I purchased was 2004. I felt that there was probably enough changes to warrent a newer copy. Plus I am planning a trip for 2008.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but didn't the authors of the guide in the 2008 version state that there are not many changes made to the book, so if you are expecting an entirely new and fresh version then to not bother?
(Not in those words exactly of course, but I feel like they wrote something along those lines. I don't have my book here with me at work.)

I'm a note taker who writes all over my book when I plan a trip so I have to buy a new one for every trip. But if you don't need new white space, and you are only going for new reading matterial, I wouldn't worry about a new one.

That's refreshing honesty!

Thanks everybody, I kind of thought I wouldn't buy one but just wanted some opinions first.

Lol, well don't quote me exactly on that, hopefully someone else can confirm.
I think they were trying to refer to the people who buy the book who love WDW so much that they read it cover to cover, rather then using bits and pieces of it that apply to them to plan their trip.

I buy the Unofficial Guide every year, and have done so for the last four years. The information in the guide books doesn't really change every year, but sometimes little things change. Not really enough to warrant buying a new one every year...but I guess reading something about Disney World just makes me feel happier.

I might be a little mad...but "we're all mad here"...

Like KrazyKemp, I used to buy a new guidebook every year because it made me happy to read about WDW.

Now, thanks to forums like this one, my addiction is fed for free. I haven't bought a guidebook since 2003.

In the UK, I buy Simon Veness' Brit's Guide to Orlando and WDW every year. The information is solid, and it's a handy reference guide on holiday when I can't get on the web.

For the first 2008 edition, we submitted about 100 pages of content changes for an 850 page book. That doesn't include price updates, which we don't count in those totals.

We also update each year's edition in February, which is about half-again as many updates. So roughly 15-18% of the book changes every year.

The touring plans get tested on an almost constant basis, and tweaked when necessary. Actually, this is an interesting point for the touring plans. We've tried mightily for the last two years to come up with better one-day touring plans for the Magic Kingdom, since the ones in the book have remained there unchanged for a number of years. We spent many hundreds of hours in the parks, testing numerous variations on the plans, and didn't come up with anything consistently better than what we already have. In that case, a lot of effort went into something that had zero impact to the book. So it looks like we haven't updated it, but it's because we haven't found anything better.

We rarely change attraction descriptions, unless Disney changes the ride. We have gone back to re-visit certain classic attractions, like Pirates of the Caribbean, to put into better context the importance of the ride in theme park history. I expect we'll do the same for Splash, Spaceship Earth and other attractions in upcoming editions.

While the format of the hotel and restaurant chapters has not changed much over the last few years, much of the content has. The Contemporary review, for example, is vastly different than, say, 2006. And as Disney refurbs its resorts, especially its deluxe resorts, you've seen those reviews change.

Hope this helps!

Poor things:D
Thank you for your reply, I loved the book and it helped very much this past trip. I sort of agree with some people here, it's just fun to read!

I buy one almost every year. regardless of travel plans. I just enjoy reading it occasionally. Maybe once I retire I'll cut back to every other year,....maybe not.

I get the new Birnbaum's every year as an X-Mas gift. Been getting one for years now.:sohappy:

I get the Birnbaum's for Christmas every year also. I realy like that. Even if I unfortunately don't make it to the World that specific year, I have a sort of souvenir of what was going on. :)

I buy one every year ... gives me some "fun" reading rather than "school" reading. :)

I just bought the 2008 With Kids version, as the local book store didn't have anything else. How much more is there in the "original" version? Should I order it?

Thanks

I always buy a Birnbaum's before the trip....kinda like a momento to save from the trip. Its fun to go back and look at the old stuff that is no longer.

We bought one for our 2006 trip & one for our 2007 trip.
I'm not sure if we will get one for our trip scheduled for 2008.
