Disney's Streaming Services: Disney+ (and Hulu, ESPN+, Star, & hotstar)

Even if you continue to envision your D+/Hulu combination, you gotta know that the streaming business is stalling, stock markets are falling, and Disney has a heavy load of debt. All of these make them getting all of Hulu impossible.
And just because you keep saying it doesn't mean Disney is getting rid of Hulu or other 21CF assets.

Iger has already stated that streaming is an important part of Disney's future. There is no way that Disney is getting out of the streaming business. In fact their goal still remains to make it profitable, and they appear to be on-track to do that by the end of this year hopefully, which includes Hulu. In addition Disney is actually contractually obligated to buyout the remaining 33% stake of Hulu that Comcast owns by 2024 in a put/call option. That was all part of the deal was made in 2019 and is still on the table as of today. Iger can go back to Comcast and renegotiate which based on his public comments appears to be what he and the Disney Board is debating. But short of that Disney will be getting Hulu in 2024, that is the deal that he made in 2019. So I don't know why you say its impossible for them to get all of Hulu, as its in the contract that they will. But things can change and we will see.

Also Disney is paying down its debt, it now almost back to the same debt load it was pre-pandemic. Which means they will start paying down the 21CF debt in short order. Several of us have already mentioned this to you previously.

As I've said I don't know what is going to happen (and neither do you), but I wouldn't bet on Disney selling Hulu (or any 21CF assets) if I were you.

As @Tom P. stated:
Streaming in general is sputtering. When all you had were places like Netflix that combined content from tons of different providers, that was one thing. Now everybody and his brother has their own streaming platform and each has a specific niche with one specific brand or set of brands to sell. And people are growing weary of shelling out the same amount of money they used to spend on a cable bill to buy all their streaming platforms. Is anything actually drawing people to Paramount+ besides Star Trek, for example?

I think some sort of seismic shift is coming in the streaming wars. I'm not sure what it will be, but I know that the current trajectory is not sustainable. And I don't think Disney+ is positioned to be one of the winners right now.
Forget that deal they made in 2019. The plan is most likely to be different from 5 years ago. Disney is also making cost-cutting moves recently on top of that. Give up!

That is one posters opinion, it is not fact.

However with that said I do agree with one thing they said. I do believe, and have said so before, that a shift is coming. I feel that eventually there will be a shift back to a cable model with streaming. There will be providers that will offer a bundle of streaming services for a single price point, maybe that is the future of the old cable companies I don't know. Point is that I agree its not sustainable to have every studio having its own streaming service. There will be clear winners in the streaming wars, and right now it looks like it'll be Disney and Netflix as those clear winners. The question will be what happens to the rest. Do they license all their content to Netflix and Disney, maybe. We shall see.

Point is that Disney is setting itself up to be in streaming long term no matter what the landscape looks like in the future.

Um, no. The plan is still the same, that contract is still 100% in place and Comcast has already stated the same. Here is what Jeff Shell, the head of NBCUniversal who reports to Brian Roberts head of Comcast, said back in December on Hulu:

“We think it’s worth a lot of money because it’s sold on a full-control basis, as if you were auctioning it off. And I think there’s no indication that anything else is going to happen than Disney writing us a big check for the asset in ‘24,” Shell said.

So even Comcast is of the opinion that Disney will buy the rest of Hulu from them in 2024.

Look I've already acknowledged that I don't know what Iger and the Board will do with regards to Hulu. Could they keep it, absolutely. Could they sell it, again absolutely. We'll all find out at the same time. However you my friend have to just accept that it is possible for Disney to absolutely buyout the rest of Hulu and keep all assets of 21CF intact no matter how you might feel about it.

Well could you please not make a speculation regarding Disney DTC or Hulu whenever DCBaker posts a new article like the one about Joe Early anymore? It feels like, to me, you’re jumping to conclusions.

The Disney+ Original Movie “Crater” will debut exclusively on the service on May 12. Directed by Kyle Patrick Alvarez, the coming-of-age sci-fi adventure stars Isaiah Russell-Bailey, Mckenna Grace, Billy Barratt, Orson Hong, Thomas Boyce and Scott Mescudi. While Baobab has not yet decided on a distributor, the Emmy-winning studio recently announced two upcoming projects with Disney+. With the streamer, Baobab is developing an animated anthology series titled “The Witchverse,” based on the short VR film “Baba Yaga” written by Eric Darnell, and a feline workplace comedy series called “Intercats,” created by Darnell and Pamela Ribon.

You can now access Ant-Man on Disney+ with an ASL option when viewing the movie.

"Ahead of National American Sign Language (ASL) Day on April 15, Disney+ has added a new option for Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man. Starting today, viewers can access ASL as an option when viewing Scott Lang’s first adventure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The ASL Video service was created by Deluxe in partnership with Grupo Steno, with Delbert Whetter, of RespectAbility, joining the project as a daily consult on ASL best practices and to help build Creative Guidelines. Additionally, Douglas Ridloff — who has previously worked on other Marvel Studios titles involving ASL, including Eternals and Hawkeye — joined to work with the ASL performer, Jac Cook.

Whetter explained: “The Deaf creatives on the team, which include Douglas Ridloff and ASL performer, Jac Cook, exceeded expectations as they set out to communicate Ant-Man’s entertaining dialogue and sound effects in a manner befitting Marvel’s distinctive style, subversive humor, and high-velocity action.“

In the MCU’s first introduction to Scott Lang, the master thief must embrace his inner hero and help his mentor, Doctor Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.

To access the feature with ASL, find it under the EXTRAS tab on the ANT-MAN page on Disney+."

Yes
That’s not all. Per press releases, films and shows from the Sony Pictures library will be coming to Disney+ later this year.

Indeed. This is part of the deal that Sony made with Netlfix and Disney, namely, that Netflix will get Sony movies in the Pay1 Window, and Disney+ will get them in the Pay2 window.

This agreement began with movies released in 2022 (and select library choices), and it's now Pay2 time.

Former NBCU president Tom Rogers believes Bob Iger is not ”putting forward a transparent enough analysis” when it comes to Disney+. Rogers believes streaming’s low profitability versus cable will restrain Disney’s earnings for a long time to come and he believes Iger is not being as frank about the true picture.

Oy vey. It's about the stock price.

Like Peltz, the concern is their personal portfolio which holds Disney Stock that isn't rising in value and isn't paying dividends. How dare they!

"Be profitable like cable!!" -- Cable is dying.
"Streaming has low profitability!!" -- Netflix is profitable.
"They gotta make streaming profitable, but buying Fox and getting that debt was a mistake!! -- Buying Fox was necessary to bring their streamer to global markets. If they didn't buy Fox, they'd be spending that money attempting global penetration in other ways. Plus, they got more studios to make content, otherwise, they'd have to spend money to create new studios.

Disney's stocks dropped because Wall Street isn't patient enough to wait for the target time of profitability. They were happy to pump up Disney's stock when it became clear that Disney was safe enough to park their money during the pandemic. But when Netflix had two bad quarters, Wall Street deserted all the streamers and content creators.

Now we have a conspiracy theory that Disney's going to risk hiding stuff from stockholders and the security administration. Yeah, that's their M.O.!!
