Disney's Live Action The Little Mermaid

I think there are some people who are so upset with Disney’s management that they won’t accept any other factors as contributing to its problems. Nuanced analysis is difficult on this type of site.
You don’t need nuanced discussion when the whole thing needs to be blown up.

As far as the absolutely ridiculous complaints of people discussing the box office instead of the film it’s The Little Mermaid.

It’s been around almost 35 years now.

The box office for this movie was hyped by countless posters on this site all the way to Iger himself.

The box office failures of Mermaid, Elemental, Indy, Strange World, Lightyear etc. have all been discussed.

The box office discussion is not something limited to TLM.

The reason this film gets defended so vigorously on this forum is many posters who love to post as if everything they say is fact predicated a billion.

Oops.

You don't have any inside sources, so from where are you getting those numbers?
$250 budget x2…$140 marketing costs

That’s what the trades have suggested - minimum…

So what exactly are you telling yourself to doubt that it’s valid and SOMEHOW this is some kinda of a “sleeper” hit?

In all my years of watching fans make excuses for Disney stumbles…there has never been anything like this.

Funny how failures across every business segment will do that…

Crazy, crazy world. 🌎

What exactly is the point of keep harping on "failure, failure, failure" over and over again. It's like someone with an unfortunate mental disability perseverating on the same thing.

You googled "people who say the same thing over and over again" didn't you? (I only know this because I did it too ;))

They’ll respond with “inflation”.
My first thought reading this wasn’t inflation but “what was the budget”, since that’s been the focus of many of our arguments… it was $95 million.

The only reason TLM hasn’t made a profit (at the box office) is because it was so expensive, had they spent $100 million, or even $200 million, there’d be no debate whether it made money or not.

Because a movie from 8 years ago before a massive inflationary spike in 2022-23 doesn't matter?

Eggs and flour and ground beef cost a lot more in 2023 than they did in 2015, and movie tickets and their profits are similarly impacted.

Adjusted for inflation, Cinderella '15 with a production budget of $117 Million and a marketing budget of $60 Million versus Mermaid '23 with a production budget of $250 Million and a marketing budget of $100 Million and using a 60/40 take of box office for domestic/overseas...

Cinderella '15 made a profit of $142 Million from its global box office. Yet as of this past weekend, Mermaid still stands at a loss of $76 Million.

Mermaid '23 will need to do at least $285 Million more at the global box office to match Cinderella '15, adjusted for inflation.

Does anyone think of the reverse? What it Cinderella came out today… would it have earned as much, based on the cost of things today?

I can’t imagine people would be flocking to see it these days 😅

Because the point about inflation has already been dozens of times and because anything positive posted here is inevitably met with negative naysaying. A certain contingent who’ve never seen the film and have no interest in it are intent on filling this thread with joylessness, and they’ve regrettably succeeded.

Not just this thread but any thread discussing recent Disney films.

So you want everyone to detach themselves from reality and pretend the film was a massive success so your feelings dont get hurt?

This is even worse than the Starcruiser thread when people defended that obviously terrible idea.

Slap the Disney name on something and people rejoice over mediocrity. It’s why the parks have been allowed to decline so much.

The production budgets for BatB, TLK, and Aladdin were all relatively close to that of TLM. Yet there is NO information to be found for the marketing spend for those movies.

Cinderella (the Pierce Brosnan one) was released in 2021. A Disney version today would probably look a lot like that especially the fairy god person.

Well to be fair, the people who want to talk about the content of the film and all the details not relating to box office returns. Have all abandoned that thread and it's now buried on page 3. A certain poster even said thankfully the "trolls" aren't coming to this thread. Yet all those people are in this thread. It would seem to me that if people don't want to talk about box office and the sort, they would have stuck to the spoiler thread?
