In a twist of irony, Spideyverse 2 only made $88 million overseas, just $10 million above TLM despite Spidey being immensely popular worldwide.

Not sure of the country by country breakdown. Will have to check on that one. Not sure where it fell short and what markets are left to open it.
Release dates are thru 6/22

But I wouldn’t expect international to be huge for it

It's not really irony when Into the Spider-Verse made $185 million internationally in its run, which was roughly half of the total box office.

Is this a parody post?

I
That is the progression of “Igerism”…
It’s not working in parks…and it’s not working in theatrical…or streaming…probably not consumer products either…

I think cruiseline is ok? Having a really small fleet keeps em packing in 👍🏻

Oh bless you…
Are you here to defend the honor of “the company”

All shall kneel before ZOD!!!
Jedij-whatever is a Disney suckup over at the Box Office Forum too.

Are you for real?

Strange World flopped, Lightyear flopped, Mermaid is sinking, and things don't look too good for the upcoming films Indy and Elemental - they're being savaged by critics who saw the films at Cannes. Disney is laying off thousands. The Star Wars hotel was closed because it was losing money. Disney stock is crashing. Disney+ is still a huge unprofitable money pit.

Where did I lie?

And you forget ant man…which is important cause fools around here thing a “new avengers” is gonna reboot the whole MCU with same villian.

This has to be a concern for Marvel, Infinity war was the culmination of a decade of excitement and build up, the first few movies in the quantum series haven’t had the same reception. The overall story may still come together but so far it isn’t as interesting a build up. Personally I find it much more confusing than Thanos but it has potential, will just have to see if it pans out.

They’re too far down the geek well…

Cut it out, bring in X, get the first Avengers back

Yeah…I’m sure I’m wrong…but let’s see how It goes anyway?

And Spider-Man just opened to $17.3M in China this weekend (or nearly 7X TLM's $2.5M) so it is not an issue with the box office, it is clearly a rejection of the specific product.

One of the biggest questions from the beginning being discussed on boards (both here and on film sites) was the Asian reaction to this film. A historically strong supporter of Disney films, the question of this particular film's reception was always going to be key to its route to profitability.

TLM in South Korea also opened to only $2.7M - only 23% of the $11.8M for BATB.

Japan opens 6/9 so next week we will know the answer.

China had The Mermaid (2016), a local release that was a huge box office success. So I think that's explainable by the market merely lacking any nostalgia for the franchise and ironically maybe even interpreting it as a rip off of their own.

South Korea is definitely weirdly problematic. Although again Mermaid may precede that markets nostalgia they generally do respond well to Disney fare (unlike China which is so hit and miss).

Now Japan, I expect this market holds no excuse. Mermaid is heavily featured in the parks. So it would be very disappointing if this market tanked.

Saw TLM today. Clearly I’m a huge fan of the original, and I was a little worried about this one (specifically the music changes).

I loved it. Are there aspects that don’t quite work? Yes (the scuttlebutt song is meh. I would have preferred to see a song from the Broadway version added somewhere instead of that). But overall, I really enjoyed the impact that fleshing out of the characters had on the overall storyline and messaging. Definitely one of if not the best remake I’ve seen.

Glad you liked it…
…now Disney needs you to bring about 10,000,000 of your closest friends to get it up over $500 mil.

I’m not debating that, though I will say I have heard nothing but fantastic reviews from all the woman my age (for whom LM was really the start of our Disney movie theatre experience) who are bringing their daughters and sons. The theatre I was in today was the most crowded theatre I’ve been in quite some time. Even more so than super Mario.

Though I will add we saw super Mario in one of the reclining seat theatres, which have significantly less seats. We saw TLM in a regular theatre. when talking about the movie theatre business, the fact that so many theatres have moved to less capacity to have the upgraded experience is going to affect Box Office take also.

Unfortunately for Disney - as it stands - your experience is more anecdotal than the reality.

That can change…if word of mouth carries it into a stronger 3rd, 4th, 5th weeks?

Then revisit. But after 2 weeks…it probably won’t break even. Detailed below:

I think Barbie comes out soon. Same demo as Mermaid. This film will more than likely lose money, but after some creative accounting be called a resounding success.

I don’t think the press - present trajectory - will cover it as a “write down”. And they shouldn’t…it would be about flat.

But I don’t think Bob will try to spin it. It will be hush. They’ll be diverted to Indy by then anyway and that is even more of an enigma

I think Rob Marshall should never be given a Disney film again…and rob Marshall should decide that.

They continue to give him stupid mandates. I feel bad for him.
Only abrams should be the remake king

It comes out at the end of July and wouldn't put Barbie in the same demographic as TLM as it skews very adult.

However just like TLM I would say the overseas market for the movies are likely to be very light.

I just came here to share my experience - not even remotely attempting to say my experience equates to anything more than that 🤷‍♀️

I don’t dispute what you’re saying but I think like someone else said, it’s your delivery. You have got to calm down mate, it’s only a movie we are discussing here.
