I like this. Mandates are hard in America so just make it a hassle to be unvaccinated. Time to start poking instead of only providing carrots.

This is where they lose me. The "proof" is showing a little paper card that is available for download all over the Internet?

A paper card with no barcode, no QR code, no serial number? Just some scribbles made by anyone with a ballpoint pen?

The people who truly don't want to be vaccinated will be happy to show you their little paper card to get into the store/theater/restaurant/bar/theme park. They'll probably even be happy to give you a spare one if you forgot yours. 🤣

All states should have been using a vaccine registration database from the get-go.

And all states should have been issuing Real ID driver's licenses by calendar year 2010. But they didn't. The Real ID Act was signed into law by President Bush in 2005. In 2020, fifteen years later, California finally got around to updating their DMV systems to comply with the law.

This is no different. A nationwide system of tracking and instantly verifying the vaccination status of 330 Million Americans is at least a decade away. At least. But my gut tells me it will never happen.

Even here in California, who never passes up a big government program and currently has an $80 Billion budget surplus to play with, is making no moves to create a statewide vaccine registration or passport system. If it's not happening in California, it's not happening in Florida or Texas or Idaho or Wisconsin either.

There will always be people who are dishonest, but if it ups the rate of honest vaccinated individuals, than it is/was worth it.

Think of it like Florida residency for Disney tickets. That is not hard to fake either. But Disney sure likes keeping it to make the most out of the requirement.

Sure.

But we know where the unvaccinated people live. Go into those working class communities of color and get them vaccinated!

I got the vaccine when it first rolled out in February and was so shocked when they handed me the vaccination card and had ME fill it out, besides one person who initialed it.

They had a year to make a database to track these things but instead we have a piece of paper.

Mine was filled out by a nurse. Plus there is an app called mychart that alot of doctors and hospitals use. Mine is thru NYU and it has a tab for the vaccine. It includes a qr code that when scanned shows the details.

Sounds a lot better than what I got.

When I helped a friend get to Soka University last winter (twice), she was handed the card by the nurse and told it was a "date reminder" of when to return for her second shot. It was only until later in the winter that it dawned on us all that these cards were the only real proof you had of getting vaccinated.

I got the J&J one-shot option later in the winter. The card is sitting in a drawer in my home 90 miles north of my beach house where I currently am spending the summer. Any La Jolla business that tries to prevent me from entering without showing that little card that is 90 miles away instantly loses my business.

And if I lose that card, or it goes into the washer, then what?

Next time you can, take a picture of it with your phone and then get it laminated and leave it at home.

They gave you a card. The provider that administered the vaccine has a digital record.

And that's where it ends. There is no known ability to transfer that information within counties in a single state, much less between the 50 states. Does LA County know I was vaccinated in Orange County? No. Does San Diego County (where I live part-time) know that? No.

Would a Disneyland ticket taker be able to tell a family at the front gate was vaccinated at Swedish Hospital in Seattle? No.

Would the hostess at Catal be able to tell a couple asking for a cozy booth were vaccinated at the University of Idaho? No.

I have no plans to go to my main home for another two months. Last summer I stayed down here until after Columbus Day; it just depends on how much fun I'm having.

I think I'd rather just download one of the many fraudulent photos of CDC cards on the Internet and show the restaurant hostess or shop saleslady that fake instead.

If college kids can use fake ID, so can I! 🤣

States do have immunization registries. And in states that don’t there is a federally supported data lake. California has an app where the data is inputted and can provide you a unique QR code.

If fraud becomes widespread enough there are means to ensure compliance. While it’s not foolproof, it’s further along than some of you think.

Most API-enabled third party apps will be able to link up and support these efforts.

That's fascinating.

Here in California at the big state run "Supersites" last winter we just had data entry clerks filling out the cards with a ballpoint pen after the nurse gave you the shot. I assume somewhere there's a tracking number attached to... my name?

Yes, I'm aware of California's immunization registry. I actually had to access that last year when I was trying to figure out when my last Tdap booster shot was, and who gave it to me. The VA? My doctor? Walgreens?

It took over a month for the state to email me back with my immunization record. It had my Tdap record, but was missing a few shots that I know for a fact that I got.

For those asking about your “digital record”. In California it does exist.

Had to submit a fix to my digital record. It showed that I only had one dose of Pfizer when I completed the 2 shots and the date of the "first dose" was actually the date of my 2nd dose. Still waiting on them to finish fixing it. But Anthem (my health insurance) has my complete Covid vaccination record to be accessed from the Sydney app so thats something.

The new site with the QR enabled code was clearly invented for a purpose. But I’m there with you… when I tried to get information on my vax history I had to scan my drivers license and other another form of ID/information and wait. Quite time intensive.

Clearly it’s designed to verify COVID vax verification only. Hope it’s more intuitive in the future.
