News Disneyland modifies mask policy - UPDATE 7/28/21

Sometimes I’m unsure where politics starts and stops here. I would think any discussion of mask mandates and vaccine mandates would count, but I’m not sure.

Anyway, if you’re interested in understanding more about the antivaxxer perspective, I can send you some links. Even though I disagree with what they believe, I think it helps to understand where they’re coming from. Just berating them and forcing things upon them does nobody any good.

I’m always interested in having conversation but keep in mind I’ve spent many hours reviewing the studies including sitting in on meetings with the CDC advisory committee - ACIP and FDA - and my opinions on the value of the vax are pretty baked.

Keep in mind that every source has a bias and no vaccine is 100% effective. But ultimately in my view two administrations with two very politically diverse/different Surgeon Generals and CDC directors and countless career staff and scientific experts do agree. To me that counts a lot more than any talking heads in the blogosphere or proclaimed media experts.

If a civil war is what is being suggested/implied then I don’t know what more I can say. If this is the “breaking point” most likely we were already heading in that direction anyway due to broader factors/dynamics beyond this board/topic.

Out of respect for the mods, I really don’t want to get too far into politics in this thread but will remind folks the vaccine is literally the byproduct of Operation Warp Speed. Its co-financing and development was supported under the Trump Administration and was led by VP Pence and the Administration’s appointed health experts as well as apolitical/nonpartisan careerists at the agency level.

Credit where it is due, I can think of no better way to honor one of his Admin’s signature accomplishments than to take the vaccine.

COVID isn't political. Vaccines aren't political. Well, they shouldn't be in any case.

I don't want to break the rules here, but I will say you bring up a good point. Getting a safe and effective vaccine into arms as soon as possible has been the goal of the federal government across two administrations.

The consistent and unified approach should make it clear that getting vaccinated is the best thing anyone can do right now.

4.2 million souls worldwide that families will never see again. I could give a rats *** about survival rate. What's ok with you? 5MM? 6MM? 10MM?

Yes, the odds are in your favor that you will not die but people can take a very simple step that will pretty much insure that a) people stop dying and b) we get back to normal. But no, we're infringing upon peoples freedoms, we're implanting chips, all the vaccinated will die in a year, it's changing my DNA, I'll grow a third eye, I'm now allergic to everything, I'll become infertile, we don't know the side effects, it was rushed to market without proper testing, and dozens of other made up excuses. Yes, you have every right to make a choice but the stats show, without a doubt (except to those that believe everything is a lie), that the vaccine is saving lives. I don't see anyone trying to hide results around the vaccine and delta variant. They've said from day one that there will be breakthrough cases. Some, very few, people will die that are vaccinated but the vast majority will have sniffles or allergy like symptoms if any at all. Meanwhile, our hospitals are filling up again, infection and death rates are climbing and others who need significant medical procedures or ER help are having problems getting the care they need. Buy you do you, I sincerely hope you don't get sick or if you do, you are part of that 99% survival rate, unlike this man in my town of Corona. Stephen Harmon died the day of his last tweet below, 9 days after being diagnosed with a 99% survivable illness.

Well I guess it's safe to say many of us saw this coming! :rolleyes:

I'm not blaming Disney of course, I understand they want to be on the safe side as they SHOULD be. And I think as long as they can stay open, they will do whatever they have to or asked of them.

But don't be too surprised we may be asked to stand 6 feet apart, socially distanced on rides, etc again. It may stop at just wearing masks, but once again we are going in the WRONG direction, even with a vaccine.

It was fun to go on DL birthday without a mask and just enjoy the day as we did before this mess started. We still plan to go back next month, but I'll see how things are going, but we have two more days on our PH, so we'll see.

But seriously, just get $#%@ vaccinated and this goes away sooner than later! My god.
Seriously. Hoping folks don't ruin my chances of an anniversary trip this year. And many many other's as well. Some permanently 😔

The dumbest people I've ever met thought they were the smartest, and many of them had various letters after their names. You can literally link quotes from various health officials and get called a conspiracy theorist around here. I guess I don't blame people for doubting the CDC and WHO after they've taken every possible position imaginable.

Having doubts or hesitancy is different from presuming one without the profession knows more just because.

My mechanic may be wrong about how often I should need an oil change, it may be overcautious to recommend, but I know what can happen if I don't listen to the professional at all when I think I know what my car needs.

Can you guys believe that the far right host of Fresh Baked Disney is saying Newsom will likely shut down the parks if not recalled? He seems very worried about his YouTube career surviving more shutdowns.

He’s not wrong. Knowing how Dr. Ghaly has handled this it wouldn’t shock me…. Though I’m not opining in any direction on the recall.

That said this is part of the reason I think we’d be better off trying to implement reasonable measures now (I.e. universal masking, social distancing, etc.) than a complete shutdown.

If I were representing the state theme park trade association right now behind the scenes I’d be looking at what other venues are doing as a “fallback plan” (to avoid a full closure and a cancellation of the highly lucrative Halloween season) for the fall.

The mods just asked us to leave politics out of this and yet you post this?

Why even bring up the recall?
To quote the guy from fresh baked Disney (I don't remember his name), he says that the date of the recall is the next important date in the progression of theme parks either continuing to move towards normalcy or regressing into restrictions and shutdowns. The outcome of the recall will likely yield vastly different outcomes for theme parks in California. It's very relevant to the topic at hand.

Mr. Takei needs to take his act on the road, instead of just hiding on Twitter and making fun of non-Asians who are not yet vaccinated.

In Mr. Takei's home state of California and community of Los Angeles County, the data on who is not vaccinated, or who are "anti-vaxxers", is very clear;

Los Angeles County Vaccination Rates as of July 29th, 2021
Asians = 77% Vaccinated
Whites = 67% Vaccinated
Latinos = 54% Vaccinated
Blacks = 45% Vaccinated

Mr. Takei's own city of 10+ Million mirrors national trends, so it's not just an LA thing for him. If he feels strongly about it, he should get out into his own city and rustle up some rides to vaccinations. Making jokes on Twitter seems to be in poor taste for him, in my opinion.

Disney is going to start requiring vaccinations for Cast Members.

Sounds good. Didn't the unions already agree to this sort of thing years ago when they vaccinated thousands of CM's against the Measles after the Measles outbreak in 2015?

Seems like there's recent precedence for large scale onsite vaccinations.

Most big corporate employers also give out free Flu shots to their employees. Does Disneyland not do that?
