Disney to announce overhaul of DL Tomorrowland at D23?

It has been said that Matterhorn could not be rebuilt as is on its current footprint due to newer building code requirements. It would require a footprint much larger, I've seen as large as double its current size thrown around, basically something that isn't going to be doable with the space limitations around the area.
That is why a nice volcano covering a huge show building would be ideal.

That would require losing the lagoon, and maybe even the subs completely just to have the Matterhorn rebuilt. Or at the very least having the lagoon and subs inside the crater and not out in the open, plus then having the bobsled inside the mountain.
The advantage is you can still have the bobsleds go in and out of the mountain and have multiple rides in the show building. You can still have the sub lagoon integrated into it. We could have that Avatar sub wet for dry ride and my Seabase Delta idea.

That is the same underwater vehicle you posted before, but just interior shots. Again the views are limited to straight ahead with limited visibility on the sides and above.

Anyways if you only want to use an Avatar 2 movie specific vehicle its fine.

It's a command ship and not the Crabsuit.

I know you keep talking about this Seabase Delta ride over the years, but I don't see Disney doing anything close to that at DLR. Heck I don't even see them doing anything Avatar related for that matter. And I'm usually the one who is more pixie duster about the future of the Park.

But its fun to dream and speculate about such ideas.

I'm still not convinced this is coming. If it does, great, but I've come to a realization: that for all of the complaining about Tomorrowland over the years, I'm not 100% convinced that the land is broken on any level other than aesthetics, and even then it's not as bad as people make it seem.

Yes, do something about the old Carousel theater. Put the rockets back on the podium. But otherwise there's very little that can happen without tearing up the Autopia/Monorail/Subs area, and very little that can I see happening in that area other than just copying and pasting Tron in there, OR they could do like Tokyo and just merge that chunk of real estate into Fantasyland. In the grand scheme of things, Tron is fine as an attraction when considered alone, but I don't see it really doing anything to address the land's flaws (other than giving it something new and shiny), and aesthetically it would be a disaster. Fantasyland certainly doesn't need to be expanded at the expense of any other land.

I guess I'm just not sure what people want or expect with the redo. I get wanting the land to be better. But anyone who thinks that there's any chance modern Disney will get rid of, say, Buzz Lightyear or Star Tours and replace them with "something better" will likely be disappointed. And some people still haven't gotten over the last time Disneyland modified an area that used more land than was arguably justified by the current needs of the park (ROA), so is it really fair to assume that a drastic modification of the monorail/subs/autopia area would be any different this time around?

Food for thought.

I know. It's just my dreams. I keep hoping some not very imaginative imagineer intern will bring the idea to her boss and it will somehow get on the drawing board. It's the kind of stuff Disney should be building. Besides, I really don't want Tomorrowland '72 to return. It was good for it's time but would totally suck today. The Peoplemover isn't futuristic and that money could be better spent on something that would really blow our socks off.

I remember how much people screamed about losing some of the river. That project actually ended up better for it and gave us some incredible scenery.

I wonder how much people would scream if Discovery Bay replaced the subs and Autopia. It could be the perfect transition between Fantasyland and Tomorrowland in a steampunk type of way. Too bad steampunk really isn't in fashion anymore.

Yeah, but nostalgia sells, especially now. So bringing back TL from the '67-'77 era would be met it huge praise. And it would buy them at least 25 years before having to redo it again.

Not if it looks like what they are doing to Downtown Disney. I don't want manufactured nostalgia. I want something better for Walt's park.

TL 98 opened when I was in high school as I was entering a decade + where I became less interested in Disneyland. I’m just wondering what the reaction was from super fans of the day. Here you go guys… here is Mint Green Space Mountain and we put the “Rocket Jets” right next to the Plaza Inn.

I was there and generally unimpressed. I enjoyed my one ride on Rocket Rods. I did like the look of copper Space Mountain. That’s it.

We got tired of waiting in line for Rocket Rods and decided to do single rider. I think the only thing that was impressive was the tunnel from circlevision to the rocket tower. Innoventions was just sad. At least they combined the Autopia tracks.

Tear out the old Tomorrowland. They will never rebuild it to its former incarnation. They need to start fresh with the Tomorrowland theme or a different land. I would build a copy of the Matterhorn and bobsleds upgraded to smoother track but follow the same layout as close as possible along with more scenery inside. Maybe save Space Mountain's track as it is a fun coaster but change the theme up or just sell it to a regional park. The rest would be a blank slate. No Tron clone though. The building is too big and ride time too short.

To me that's way too much real estate for Tomorrowland. If the subs and Autopia were to go, I'd say keep the Matterhorn where is it (for the reasons others have already said) and just bisect Tomorrowland and a Fantasyland expansion at the red line.

They would have to rebuild all the Monorail tracks to accommodate the changes as well.

FL already has a big plot of expansion space with the FL Theater and the old Motorboat area. I don't know if it also needs the majority of the Autopia track too. Not saying I wouldn't mind more in FL, just not sure if it needs that much to do it.

I have a Tomorrowland '98 opening day T shirt I've worn to the park on occasion.
