Disney Springs construction begins

I think it's safe to say this one has a lot more legs under it

Based on ... what? Concept art? Flamingo Crossing and Hyperion Wharf both had that. The cool name? Because I like HW and even FC better than the old-folks-home sounding "Disney Springs."

We've known the essential line-up of I-Drive Live since last year--certainly the main anchors. It's made up of third party restaurants and shops mostly (with a couple attractions), has a parking garage, and is supposed to open in late 2014.

We know nothing but Starbucks that is going into DS*. It's allegedly made up of third party restaurants and shops mostly (maybe a couple of attractions), has two parking garages, and is supposed to open its final phase in 2016 ... which means the first phase probably better open by late 2014.

Chuy's, Red Robin and Cooper Hawk Winery are fine with I-Drive Live broadcasting their upcoming foray into the market, but Chain Restaurant X doesn't want anyone to know it will soon be associated with Disney World? That doesn't add up.

* We actually know more of what isn't coming to DS. Three chains whose logos were on the initial leaked artwork have denied any involvement, while Trader Sams, also included, is strongly rumored to be going into the Poly instead.

no....because of construction being done now... stores closing...construction trailers on site... permits being filed, etc. etc.

I'm curious on how long the parking garages will take, considering word has it that the closed lots are already decimating the sales numbers in the stores along the west side.

Still, and once again just like at Flamingo Crossings, that only proves they're building something, not they necessarily have tenants to occupy the storefronts once completed. The argument that they would not have started construction without having tenants lined up falls apart when you realize they've done the same thing before.

Fall 2014 for the first one I believe.

Hey as a "midwesterner" the novelty of eating in a big dome...surrounded by Movie memorabilia...still hasn't worn off on me!!

Remember all we have up here are cows and corn!

i'd rather go to a Hard Rock. i think i've been to one planet hollywood, in Atlantic City, and it was one time too many. just felt....very cheap. though the prices weren't.

As we all know Disney dosnt do anything "A" typical. Most times a development of this nature post what tenants are going to occupy the spaces. It creates interest. I guess they think because it has the Disney name on it that is all anyone needs to know. They have plans....construction has started....I see no reason not to announce some of the tenants. makes little sense....then again I havnt made sense of their decisions for sometime now. Although not a fan of the name I am glad they are doing something. It remains to be seen if the place has a soul. If it is just a fancy mall I will be disappointed. I think they are right about one thing....no matter what they put there it will draw. The plan should have had a refurb of Disneyquest in it. A reboot could be amazing with new tech. They could incorporate the Magic handcuff some how.

All we know absolutely for sure is that at least one parking garage is going up and a few more PI buildings are coming down. The rest is probably still subject to change, but assuming no major problems with the economy I am pretty confident this gets off the ground this time.

The vendor thing is a little strange, but I don't think it's a "smoking gun" signifying that they are having issues signing up vendors. One alternative theory is that maybe they just want to wait until everything is locked down and announce it all at once. Not sure what the advantage is of waiting, but then again what does Disney gain by announcing them all today. I think they are most likely holding back since the stores and shops won't open for 2 years or more. The infrastructure like garages and bridges is going up first before the new places will open. A lot can change in 2 years from both Disney's side and the vendors. If they announce a bunch of vendors today and then for some reason some don't materialize we'll here all sorts of griping about it. Look at the leaked 7DMT plans which had an additional show scene that was cut in the final ride. A lot of people are so worked up over that cut that they consider the whole ride a complete failure.

By announcing your anchors, you make it more appealing to the little shops you need to fill in spaces. Remember, this is supposed to be like 200 new tenants. They're a lot more likely to sign on the dotted line if TDO can say. "Hey we have Harrods and an Apple store coming in, too."

When you're charging a third of your tenant's gross profits, the economy isn't the issue at all. I do think the parking garages are a lock at this point, probably a Planet Hollywood makeover as well.

We don't know what Disney is and is not disclosing to potential vendors. They may be giving them some idea of who the new anchor tenants are without making a public announcement.

The economy does still matter. If there is a sudden major downturn many retail chains will pull back on expansion plans. Some could go bankrupt. A lot can happen between now and 2016.

But you're then still entirely dependent on soliciting possible tenants or them going through the effort of fighting through Disney's bureaucracy.

I agree that one possibility for the delay in naming vendors is they are still going through the soliciting and bureaucracy phase. My only point was that just because they haven't named the vendors doesn't mean it's the only possibility.

True. But even if the economy is going great guns, a lot of big players in the restaurant/retail industry are going to balk at that rent.

I can hardly blame people with Disney's track record for these sorts of things.
HW would be well underway but that plan failed to deal with the parking situation. So now we are on to Plan B. Used to be such errors would be swept under the rug but not anymore.

So we see that Disney is like most businesses behind the scenes. Earth shattering news for those spirited dusters out there. Some of us figured it out about the time we realized there is no Santa. Or free lunches.

Got to go because National Football League.:joyfull:
