Disney plans hiring freeze, some jobs cut......

So we've got some folks convinced the cuts won't effect front-line park CMs (or maintenance or guest service). Is that based on some actual knowledge, or just the fact that Disney is so smart they'd never do something that stupid?

Right? Because I can certainly see where Chapik himself clearly stated "Except for the parks and especially front line CM's" /s

""These efforts will help us to both achieve the important goal of reaching profitability for Disney+ in fiscal 2024 and make us a more efficient and nimble company overall. This work is occurring against a backdrop of economic uncertainty that all companies and our industry are contending with."

The ironic part is when companies make tough decisions like layoffs , Wall Street likes what they hear .

They’re doing exactly what the Wall Street playbooks says to do…and it’s not a tough decision at all.

In my opinion everyone is effected, but depends on the target of the reduction. If the goal is right-sizing the org after years of business(failed products, project hires, r&d moves, etc.) to meet current and forecasted needs, then it should be planned with different goals at different levels. Trimming the fat as some say. I think this was mostly common pre current economic area era. 2020 ish.

If it’s reactionary and based strictly on numbers and someone in finance says we need to cut “x” expenses to meet goals then whatever level they need to meet budget at gets a percent and it’s on from there. Make the salary numbers add up, business needs take a back seat. Front line, managers, execs. dosntmatter below c-suite. it’s a number on a spreadsheet. I read this as the case here.

My industry is not immune to layoffs, just remember these are real people with real needs. It stinks to see people you know walk out with boxes and security escorts.

Imagine going on vacation to a resort like Gaylord Palms and being told that services were cut back because the company needs to pay off other debt not related to said resort. Like that's not my problem buddy.

It was like yesterday when I survived my company layoffs . Friends and peers being walked out by security no chance to say goodbye, then we had an all staff meeting after the layoffs. It was like a somber feeling and winning the lottery at the same time. Then my workload doubled shortly afterwards. I was lucky to be working.

You are kidding yourselves if you think that the largest body of workers won't be a part of this. You may not "see it" at first. But all of the cast positions around WDW will be directly involved.

Front of the line guest facing will be primarily attractions that are not going to be reopen any time soon and ones that are no longer going to be staffed to open. Reduced efficiency ahoy in a lot of places too.

The main get in that entire deal is xmen and FF for MCU…and avatar but I don’t know what the Cameron partnership deal is?

I’m starting to think they paid all that money primarily for control of Hulu, the 20th (21st) century Fox brand has been relatively nonexistent since Disney bought it.

They aren’t even using a lot of the Fox library on D+ or Hulu yet.

Iger went all in on streaming, it’s a huge gamble that will make him look like a genius or an idiot a decade from now.

D+, DCL

New ships yes, existing ones no. Just been on a cruise for 2 weeks spoke to a number of staff off the record and even went to the beach and lunch with some in a port and Disney has left the ships about 10% understaffed, doesn't sound a lot but on a ship that works it's staff hard when full staffed that's hard on them. It used to considered a great place to work now most are unhappy and burning out. The quality of everything has dropped but the prices rise just like the rest of the Disney empire.

We watched that awful Pinocchio movie onboard which was a prime example of cost cuts and lowering quality in the the movie dept too, the graphics were embarrassing bad and watching it on DCLs faded damaged screen made it even worse.

Nothing earth shattering, but this was known IN DEPTH at the D23…kinda makes all those Josh bumbling “blue sky” parks presentations even bluer…new nighttime show for Epcot? The world ball is being dusted off right now as we speak…Dinoland will remain a closed down shopping mall parking lot, forget about the SE refurb, and without mentioning any names, another MK attraction might just remain in a holding pattern for the foreseeable future and now TWDC has the PERFECT excuse.

Far from it, just saying front line roles at parks are usually the last to ever get cut (other than Covid)

The ones who survive the layoffs should not be surprised of more of a workload on their plate.

I think that’s right. The Star service in Asia was a big component. But yes, they’ve done NOTHING with the huge back catalogue of 20Th Century Fox films other than to pull a handful onto D+. Heck, they basically just pushed them into theaters with little to no marketing (The Kings Man, Death on the Nile).

There are burdens that will be placed heavier on middle management and front of the line, there will be guest experiences directly effected, and then there will be the burden placed on the guest themselves to make up the differences made by this.
