And like so many before it, The Great Movie Ride braces for closing as another true Disney classic turns into a memory.

It's sad to see something so iconic, so orchestrated, so genuine, be gutted. No doubt, it's replacement will be a true experience but it will never be the kind of experience Great Movie Ride was. To me, the ride was almost as moving and powerful as the original EPCOT Center attractions. A clear message. It showed us how Hollywood has not only been shaped by us, but how it shapes us. From the music, to famous one liners, to dance numbers, Hollywood has an impact on us all. In its early days it represented optimism and, like many American dreams, it grew with only the belief that it could get better. Nothing like the Great Movie Ride has been done before and nothing like it will be done again I imagine. The opening left you excited, the gunfights made you thrilled, the aliens made you scared and the music made you feel. For me Tara's theme from Gone with the Wind always got me! No matter what people say, The Great Movie Ride has it's earned its place in history as a Disney classic, and after almost 30 years of being quiet on the set, it's time to say goodbye.

awww i'm crying wow

I don't know if that Tweet was a joke or not, but it actually doesn't sound like the worst idea to me. Lots of fantastic classic musicals out there that aren't just Disney cartoons. Westside Story, Phantom of the Opera, or even silly ones like Little Shop of Horrors. Done right, I could see some potential at it being a more palatable replacement for GMR than Mickey. Though GMR would still be missed.

I still do want a Mickey ride, but elsewhere in the park and not replacing GMR.

But it sounds like Tom Corliss is taking credit as the source to this rumor based on the replies, so this is almost certainly BS. And this doesn't sound like an idea modern Disney executives would be open to doing either. Almost seems...Eisner-like?

Let's face it.. how many people <30 today have any affinity for 'The Golden Age of Hollywood'? Besides recognizing the names, how many even have an idea what the big names were famous for anymore?

The continuous output that is hollywood, combined with the incredible speed of technology makes modern audience less interested/aware of the product from generations before IMO.
i'm 24
besides gone with the wind, vivien leigh was also in "a streetcar named desire" (as was marlon brando)
besides wizard of Oz, judy garland was also in many MGM musicals easter parade, meet me in st. louis, a star is born, and a number of movies with mickey rooney (such as babes in arms) and gene kelly (such as summer stock)
besides singin in the rain, gene kelly was also in an american in paris, brigadoon, for me and my gal,
other than footlight parade, busby berkeley also worked on gold diggers of 1933, 42nd street, and many other musicals to give them a "kaleidoscope" look
other than public enemy, james cagney also did Yankee Doodle Dandy. his leading lady, jean harlow, was in dinner at eight, platinum blonde, libeled lady, and a bunch more during her short career.
besides casablanca, humphrey bogart was also in sabrina with audrey hepburn, the african queen with katharine hepburn, and the big sleep with the non-hepburn lauren bacall

my wishlist if they HAD changed the ride with new sequences:
charlie chaplin (preferably city lights)
fred astaire and ginger rogers (any film they did in the 30s) (i do get giddy seeing the sign with their names on it in spaceship earth though!)
gone with the wind (i'll never go hungry again!)
holly golightly in breakfast at tiffanys
marilyn monroe in some capacity (seven year itch?)
willy wonka (come with me...)
bonnie and clyde (we rob banks!)

I'm just hoping they go the "Mickey throughout the years" idea. Such as starting from the 1920's and 1930's era straight up to the Band Concert with Classic Mickey then straight up to the 1940's with Fantasia (Sorcerer's Apprentice). After all Mickey's 90th Birthday is next year.

i apologize i don't know how to quote what you quoted without going back to find it, but i hope they do a timeline of mickey too. as much as i dislike his most current iteration, a ride showcasing every version of mickey i would prefer much more over one that just focuses on the way he's animated today. of course i know nothing of animation but it looks so cheap and cartoon-networky to me. I wish they would bring back 80s or 90s mickey! but I know they never will

But I liked the new 2013 Mickey shorts. Finally gives Mickey a break from edutainment shows.
