Permit filed for DHS called "Project M"
The address on this permit is for the GMR building, although that also includes things like the Buzz and Woody M&G in Pixar Place.

Apologies if this was already covered, but is getting a Mickey attraction into the park linked to the 2019 public domain/copyright expiration issue?

I don't see how. Yes, it's true that some of the early Disney works are scheduled to fall into the public domain beginning in 2019 if Disney can't successfully lobby Congress to extend the length of copyright again. So, for example, it's possible that Steamboat Willie could lose it's copyright protection and be free for anyone to distribute.

But that doesn't mean that the character of Mickey Mouse enters the public domain. Mickey Mouse is a registered trademark of Disney, a very different type of intellectual property. A registered trademark has no fixed expiration date. As long as Disney actively uses and defends its trademarks -- as it very clearly does -- they don't risk losing that protection. And with or without a Mickey update to The Great Movie Ride, there's no chance anyone could accuse Disney of not actively protecting Mickey as a trademark.

Bottom line: If the early copyrights expire, it would allow people to distribute those particular works without compensating Disney. But it would not permit someone to, say, make a brand new film featuring Mickey Mouse or any other Disney character. And I can't see how what happens to The Great Movie Ride would impact any of that.

Anyone wondering if this will be nothing more than PhilharMagic 2.0 darkride edition? I've heard rumors this will have more of a "Mickey and Friends" vibe playing out like a large commercial endorsing Disney Animation's greatest hits with Mickey and Friends popping in an out of famous movie scene vignettes using the hackneyed imagineering goto "Where's Mickey?" plot device. Man I hope not. I'm all for "Mickey at the Movies" a celebration of the big cheese. Here's hoping they get this right.

Oh please we don't want another Disney attraction where guests have to find another Disney character. We already have "Where's Donald" and "Where's Nemo" both at Epcot.

I know right! I'm in panic mode. They better not, I say! :shaking a clinched fist at imagineers somewhere:
I'm just hoping they go the "Mickey throughout the years" idea. Such as starting from the 1920's and 1930's era straight up to the Band Concert with Classic Mickey then straight up to the 1940's with Fantasia (Sorcerer's Apprentice). After all Mickey's 90th Birthday is next year.
