It would be a shame if they go through with this move. There is plenty of expansion room for new attractions. I agree that GMR needs some updating, but nothing bank breaking/major imho. I think having a center attraction based on classic movies in a theme park that will still be based on movies (even after all the expansion is done) just makes sense. Put the Mickey ride in animation court yard... attach an animation attraction to it, update VotLM, keep one mans dream...that would be another amazing part of the park...i know this has all been said before but it bares repeating...

Kinda random with the topic, but, the main problem with Disney parks right now is the constant influx of temporary attractions:Star Wars Launch Bay,the cabanas in tomorrowland, the stage in tomorrowland.
Their management makes no sense; they want profit, but they won't spend more to yield more on what guests want. In Almost ALL cases, guests want NEW rides and attractions.
The part that I don't understand is that WDW has practically gotten NO NEW attraction during Iger's leadership. In my opinion, the last good NEW attraction they got was Toy Story Mania back in 2008. Almost everything else was a clone or retheme. When we as guests start paying $100 for admission, we expect good quality attractions and offerings. And let's face it, the big amount of temporary looking attractions makes Disney more of an amusement park, rather than a theme park, which is why Disney holds a special place in my heart, and so does for everyone else on the forums.
What Disney should do with The Great Movie Ride is keep it as is, but repair/refurbish broken effects (what happened to all the wind in the fantasia scene?). A Great Mickey Ride (not the title) should head to animation courtyard and replace Star Wars Launch Bay (how many Star Wars things do they need?! "Rants").
A theme park is not just concrete shaped like a castle; it has a special purpose or mission associated for the park. Magic Kingdom starts off as a normal day through life (Main Street USA) but when you look ahead, you know there's a huge castle in front. Magic kingdom literally transports you to each of the realms and environments of fantasy; tomorrowland, fantasyland, etc.
But each of the other parks have their own themed purpose also.
Hollywood Studios was a real, working movie studio, with each attraction as its various counterparts on the set.
Personally, since there is no more filming at the park, the new theme is that the park is essentially a set, where each guest is a starring role for the park. To make this effective, they need various simulated film production aspects: a sound production studio, a GIANT picture Camera sponsored by Snapchat, and of course, the sets themselves!(toy story land, Star Wars land, The Hollywood Tower Hotel, etc.)
Even Snapchat replacing Kodak as primary sponsor is Better than adding nothing in the long term.

Hi folks, new member here.

I have to say the news concerning DHS is depressing. This is probably my favorite park behind MK. I love the tributes to old Hollywood and "backstage" feel the park has. Also, several of my favorite attractions are here with TGMR and the Indy stunt show at the top. I'm aiming for my next Disney trip to be in 2018 or 2019. It saddens me that my 2nd favorite park may be totally unrecognizable by then. This also stems from my not caring for Star Wars and Toy Story being towards the bottom of Disney films I like.

I will admit that my love for TGMR and Indy is rooted in nostalgia. I have very fond memories of them from my first visit to Disney when I was a child. However, I still love them and feel they're magical. Especially TGMR even though I will admit it's a bit out dated. I wish that instead of replacing them, they'd update them. Retire certain scenes from TGMR (Tarzan, Footlight Parade) and replace them with more exciting scenes from modern classics. They could also temporarily close the ride and update all of the animatronics so everything is state of the art.

As for Indy, not only is the franchise still immensely popular but they're planning a fifth movie for 2019 I believe. They could update the show to include scenes from all of the movies instead of just ROTLA.

However, I get it. Star Wars and Toy Story are two of Disney's hottest properties. Disney needs to compete with Universal/Harry Potter. Plus, nothing lasts forever. I know it and accept it. That doesn't mean I have to like it, though. Depending on how much they change DHS may determine whether I visit that particular park the next time I go to Disney.

And that's absolutely fine, but you have to also acknowledge how insanely popular the Star Wars and Toy Story franchises are, and that Disney has a habit of creating engaging environments/rides for things that you may not care about outside of a park. I doubt many people who love Tower of Terror are huge Twilight Zone fans, and I bet that the majority of people who love Rock & Roller Coaster have listened to much Aerosmith lately. The excitement for Star Wars land is so huge that I saw people posing in front of its construction walls. I don't think that overhauling the park to retire very dated and unpopular attractions and put in eagerly-anticipated new lands is in any way disappointing. (All that said, I hope the rumors are false and that TGMR never goes away, as it's a firm favorite of mine.)

I did acknowledge it:
Sorry for the confusion -- yes, you acknowledged that other people like Star Wars, but my point was that you may find you'll enjoy the Star Wars LAND --its rides, immersive environment, food -- even if you couldn't care less about the movies. Heck, I know very few people who are rah-rah fans of Avatar, but I talked to plenty of people who are eagerly awaiting the new Avatar area of Animal Kingdom, because it looks beautiful and the rides look terrific.

Yup! I dislike Avatar with a passion, but the land looks incredible, and is one of the only ips that could work well for Animal Kingdom.

You're right about that, I could wind up loving them but at the moment it doesn't seem appealing to me. Replacing two of my favorite attractions with two lands based on IPs I'm not enthusiastic about does not sound like something I'll enjoy at the moment. That may change of course once they actually come to fruition but for the time being, it's not something I'm looking forward to.

Well as of right now, they aren't getting rid of the Indy Stunt Show -- that's still just a rumor. And as marni says, getting rid of TGMR is still just in the planning stages. But neither one is being replaced by Toy Story Land or Star Wars Land -- the area that's going into is where the Backstage Tour was as well as Lights Motors Action. So I think you're in good shape.
