can there not be another thread for this discussion to happen in? it's exhausting combing through page after page for new info just to see some of you *ahem* constantly derailing things

Yes, my one joking comment in this thread is really bringing down the forums. I apologize, even though I'm confused as to which other threads I have "constantly" derailed.

I honestly don't know. Nor do I know why they didn't stick Frozen Ever After in Fantasyland and that Guardians of the Galaxy thing they're apparently replacing Energy with in Tommorowland.
It is really very simple, they need to get the crowds out of MK and into other parks. The Park with the most room for people, the most open space... I give you Epcot.

Nope, not new. He asked if there was a rule and I said yes there technically there was. Whether people follow the rule is another issue entirely.
Threads evolve and therefore the topics naturally tend to broaden as well. The same thing happens with themes in theme parks. As the theme park evolves the theme becomes less important as natural evolution expands the theme into new areas and opens new vistas.

This just occurred to me. I apologize if this has been brought up already, but...is the reason why they want to close the ride down because the executives don't want to pay the royalties needed for all the non-Disney films represented in the ride? If so, then why the heck are they still building Avatar (a non-Disney film) Land?

An excellent point even though I am looking forward to it. There's one billion reasons as to why along with a bit of Bob Iger's ego.

I think the ego factor would come in if it were TCM that decided that they didn't want to pay for it anymore. It was quite an impressive thing to have gotten them to pay for all that they did as it was. If it were to be a cash income thing I don't see Disney as rejecting the money especially if, as so many say, they are unwilling to take chances with anything new that isn't an outside IP and coupled with the fact they there are certainly other buildings in DHS that could be adapted to have a new Mickey show. No, I think it was Turner that told Iger to pound it and was withdrawing his support. Disney knowing that the attraction needed a lot of new AA's and a huge general redoing, it was decided to go a cheaper direction. Not ego... just greed. Hopefully, this time the change will end up being a positive one that most of us can get behind and enjoy.

I was talking about Avatar with his ego. He was on stage himself at the announcement. Like his other purchases, he won't let it fail or just get cancelled because of having to pay royalties for an outside IP like @DisneyManOne suggested. If GMR goes the last one left will be The Twilight Zone.

Well, technically, the ABC Commissary has a few, like the Batman TV series. As far as actual attractions however, I believe you're correct.

"You could not be more wrong. You could try, but you would not be successful." (Fun quote a few of you might get.)

Theme: Is the root of something. The most important and central thing to your story. Everything revolves around it. If your theme is the preservation of the earth and it's inhabitants, you're story revolves around that central point. You can expand on the theme, but it is still the root of your story. Your story can evolve, but is is still held together by that one point of focus. It can expand in breadth, overlooking magnificent vistas, but it will still revolve around your theme.

With that said, the theme around Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park, has been abandoned nearly completely (and the name will reflect that in the future). There is no working studio and no representation of the creation of filmed entertainment. The park is being re-cast. It will be an "adventure" where you live within the various IPs.

I regards to the drunken meandering and mostly off topic comments within this thread (not that people were drunk when they wrote them, but then again maybe), we clearly abandoned that theme too. The TCM deal will end, a new attraction will replace "The Great Movie Ride'. Many other things, will join this park in forms of attractions and shows but "The Great Movie Ride" will be no more.

Actually, I guess we agree on that point, threads fall off topic quickly. I guess you weren't entirely wrong. But I do like the quote, it's funny, so I'm leaving it.

Extra points if you know where the quote is from.

Talking about throwing things off topic. That quote from Friends might possibly be the most off topic variance I have ever seen. Good job! However, do try and stay on theme in the future. Thanks.

FYI, I rode it over Labor Day weekend with a 20-year-old and his16 year-old brother, both males (and classic alpha-males at that); and they really liked The Great Movie Ride. The 20 year-old is a Florida resident, and was really also looking forward to going back after we left and really exploring Epcot, which we did not really have a chance to do.

While they loved the thrills of RNR, ToT, Soarin', and MS; they also liked TGMR and the CoP.

Not all young people are only motivated by superheroes or the latest thrill ride.

I agree I think TGMR is still topical and relevant... I think it could use some plussing and brushing up. but it is still a good attraction...and a new Great Mickey Ride just plain makes sense as the centerpiece of the Animation courtyard...

Can we please emblazon this somewhere. TWDC execs (including Lasseter) are always going on about how important story-telling is, but a story is built of components like character, plot, setting, etc., whereas the theme is the core message that gives it meaning...it's why 'book report' rides are 'good enough' but not great. If they are going to insist on replacing rides instead of building new ones, I'm really hoping that they can at least stick to the basic principles; I think I'm lowering my expectations though.

None of that matters if the Chairman/CEO disagrees and thinks that IP's are the only important characteristic. The final decision is his.
