Disney has an "IP" issue, and not the one we've discussed often

We've seen a long stretch of the Disney parks prioritizing known IP over original attractions for a while. We already knew that.

However now they may be running into a new issue: lack of new IP. Recent box office returns for major franchises are going down and we don't know their streaming numbers (yet) but the consistent sequels, remakes, or IP that's already very prominent in the parks SEEMS to mean they're running out of popular franchises to make attractions based on, if they want to continue doing that.

This makes me wonder what they'll focus on in the next 5-10 years with Epic Universe opening shortly with some big IP.

Thoughts?

I don't think that's true. Keep in mind they went the route of duplicating rides based on Ratatouille and TRON: Legacy for the sake of simplicity, despite neither being popular franchises (in the case of TRON, because the company let it die).

Then they chose major IP's for minor fluff like Journey of Water....or smaller rides like Frozen Ever After.

RotR, GotG and Flight of Passage are the only big rides in recent years based on big IP.

Could be unpopular or whatever depending on which one, but the cost of using any IP they already own is $0. So there's a real incentive even if that IP is already present.

Are they going to build something somewhere?

Universal is reportedly needing to tap into How to Train Your Dragon and classic monsters as two IP sources. I don't think either is a particularly great idea. I think Disney will be fine.

I don't know if "need" is the right term. I know Nintendo and Harry Potter Land #3 will be the big draws, and there are a lot of people that love classic monsters, so I think it's just a matter of how well they do that land. Also, I have a feeling we're going to get a Pokemon themed land not too far after the park opens.

I dont know, I think Classic Monsters could be a sleeper hit. What kid doesnt know Dracula, Wolfman or Frankenstein just to start. Now they may not know Bella Lugosi, Lon Chaney Jr, or Boris Karloff. But the characters are a different matter. Disney were to get smart they might get Godzilla from Toho for AK :D

I was already very excited for Monsters.

After visiting Universal Studios Japan while on my first trip to that country, I am even more excited for it now. A Universal Creative involved guy told me a long time ago. They will come for Mario, and stay and return again for Monsters.

Don't forget Warner Brothers MAY soon be for sale. Will Disney over-leverage again and try to pick up those properties?

While boarding the People Mover on our recent trip, my 5 yr old daughter asked me "Daddy, what movie is this ride from?" and I instantly understood Disney's rational for slapping an IP on every new attraction.

With regards to what IPs to use, they have plenty of options with the Fox IPs (and the fact that they haven't used ANY of them yet makes me wonder if they are considering selling some of the Fox IPs off). But even more recently, I think there is still lots more potential to use Frozen, Moana, and Encanto and TDS is proving that even the older IPs (Peter Pan and Tangled [I know, not so old, but certainly from a time before Raya and Mirabel) can still find their way into the parks. Wall-E and Incredibles are still plenty popular and Stitch is still crazy popular (I saw SO many people with Stitch apparel on on my recent visit and Stitch roaming around Tomorrowland was crazy popular).

Bugs isnt the draw he was 50 years ago unfortunately, and I dont see any way TWDC could even attempt an offer. Comcast would be the buyer in my book. That could give them a "gravitas" animated characters to use in the Looney Toons
