Disney Digs Deep Into Marvel's Sack Of Obscure Superheros

Where does this leave Universal? With the Marvel Superhero land they have? I guess they will just have to pay Disney out the ying yang.

As we reported earlier this summer, Disney has bought out Marvel Comics for a big chunk of $$$ to expand their empire into the superhero realm.
The industry has been waiting to see what the House of Mouse plans to do with its acquisition and now there are talks that the Disney execs will be looking to make big money off of relatively unknown superheros.
The theory going around is that Disney will be looking to make more original franchises out of Marvel characters few people have ever heard of, since the bigger names are already taken by other investors. Execs are hoping moviegoers will get attached to heroes like Ant-Man and other lame ______ characters like that.
Yeah, we'd rather they put some of their dough into saving Spider-Man the musical than a movie about a guy who talks to ants, or whatever it is he does.

IOA is allowed to keep what it has unless it radically alters one of the attractions, hence Disney can`t use Hulk, Spidy or Dr Doom.

Me thinks the a modified Transformers will come to IOA when they decide Spidy has run its course. Hulk and Doom are much easier to repaint and rename.

I completely agree. Maybe the Hulk will become Battlestar Galactica, and the land will be renamed Sci-Fi City like in Singapore.

I agree Martin. I think they will give up the characters at Universal voluntarily. And sooner than anyone expects. The deal hasn't even been approved yet and Universal Hollywood has already removed the signage. Writings on the wall so to speak. Or should I say it's off the wall.

No, they won't. Disney has to use characters that no one's ever heard of or are so obscure, while Universal gets to cash-in on the more popular characters. A small licensing fee to Disney is nothing compared to Disney not being able to use characters they own (or will soon own). In the grand scheme of things Universal's licensing fees to Marvel are miniscule compared to what they bring in. And if the two companies are as acrimonious as people make them out to be, then Universal isn't about to let Disney have the more marketable characters. And Doesn't Universal have the rights to Transformers now, too?

We will soon see. Disney can sell any Marvel merchandise they want outside the parks it appears. So essentially Universal will be marketing Disney merchandise. Just sayin'.

Just to stir the pot, westcoaster had an update showing that Universal Hollywood has removed all the Marvel character signage. I think that speaks volumes.

http://www.westcoaster.net/updates.php?updateCD=122309&page=3

It doesn't speak volumes. The articles published at the time of the acquisition announcement stated that Universal's licensing agreements would continue to hold for parks east of the Mississippi. Most likely Universal really only wanted them for IOA, therefore the agreements covering the Florida parks were much stronger.

I know that. And Uni's announcement said Marvel was staying at IoA for the time being. They definitely used weasel words concerning the long term outlook. We will know soon enough.

That's just Wolverine that heals. And you're using the term X-Men like it applies to every single Mutant, not just Professor X's team.

Personally, I'm crossing my fingers for Disney to use Squirrel Girl.

Universal Hollywood began removing the Marvel characters long before this came about. They haven't had the characters in the park in over a year or more, removing the signage isn't that big a deal.

As already stated, Universal holds a long term exclusivity deal on the characters it currently uses in IOA and no one East of the Mississippi can compete. That isn't the case elsewhere though.

So I don't really see this effecting IOA much, but you wont see Marvel characters in any other Universal park where they don't already exist.

Disney can use any Marvel characters east of the Mississippi except those characters used at IoA. Further, it appears it only applies to the theme parks themselves. So it's possible they could be used at DTD for instance. Still further, it also appears Disney can sell all Marvel character merchandise in DTD and the Disney stores to take advantage of any movie releases. Including Spiderman. I just don't think IoA will stick with Marvel for long. Not when it is essentially putting money into a Disney owned product.

If you are a comics fan an have not seen Super Hero Squad Show yet, check it out on Cartoon Network.

By the way, as for the original article, Ant Man has been on this show already.

And, he is Hank Pym. The Pymverse, Goliath, Giant Man, The Wasp, and plenty of Marvel Properties are based on this Character. Charter Member of the Avengers BTW, which is why Disney wants to add him in for the giant crossover.

Mos recently, Pym-Skrull was maybe the third most important Skrull in Secret Invasion.

You have no clue whatsoever as to how the industry works and how incestuous it is. Do you not see Disney making money for LucasFilm, Paramount and Freemantle/FOX by placing attractions and merchandise belonging to those studios in its parks?

Now, your latest crazy theory is that Marvel is somehow coming to DD? As what? A comics shop that will tout franchises and characters at IOA?

Disney has sold Marvel merchandise at DD for years now. As well as properties ranging from Transformers to GI Joe.

You completely miss the point (as usual).

NOTE TO MODS: -- And, frankly, this thread has NO PLACE in WDW News and Rumors. This belongs in either Disney Business or on the UNI Board (is there one for Hollywood since the only news here is very old news regarding THAT park?) :xmas:

My kids are huuuuge fans of the Galactic Hero Star Wars characters which are the same makers (Hasbro) of Super Hero Squad....these toys are HUGE they fly out of the stores, if Disney was smart they would grab onto that.

Seriously, these toys are all over my house.

WDW1974....I think we are having an interesting enough conversation here, so whats the difference where it is....and sorry if its "old" to you, its "new" to me....I dont live with Disney up my rear all day, sorry, I have a life.
The conversation is pleasant enough, there's no bashing as far as I can see, let it be. There are like 54 forums not including SUB forums....I know IM NOT reading through them all just to find the EXACT to the T correct forum..
