Is he?
I had him at 57-58 or so.

Either way, it's a sad statement on the current thinking at WDI.
He graduated from Occidental college in the late seventies and was an art teacher who was invited by the father of one of his students to apply to WED. His first project was Rio del Tiempo with Herbie Ryman for EPCOT Center.

58-60 sounds like a pretty good range.

A scheduling conflict perhaps? Or has Disney, or Joe Rohde himself, decided it would not be a good idea to face cast and guests questioning about Avatar and the Yeti. Shame though, as Joe's presence was the only thing about that day that was of interest to me.
This is exactly was i was thinking just a few days ago....how *risky* it would be to have him appear when people have some questions they feel need answering. It would seem having him there publicly would only increase curiousity about certain topics ( Avatar and the status of the Yeti primarily )and folks would start asking question he ( or Disney ) may not be ready to, or able to , answer.

The cynic in me says...oh wait, they decided to charge the fans additional for that chance to chat with Joe !
( takes cynic cap off...)
;)

It is dissapointing for those wanting to take part, but this does not surprise me. I was actually more surprised he was scheduled to appear, due to his currant situation within the Company and the swirling clouds surrounding the Avatar project.
Seemed a risky thing to do.....publicity wise...and The Mouse rarely seems to take risks over anything these days.

They are watching you!

Actually I thought they were cool; they were definitely memorable. However, for some reason I hated the Burger King plastic-head king. I thought he was creepy.

As for Joe dropping out, it just reminds me that I am concerned about WDI and whether top executives understand how important that this little sandbox is to the creative element and the growth and strength of the company.

What's the point of hosting a "celebration" for a park that has lost more attraction in the last 10 years than they have added?? And the big ones that are left don't even run properly. Kali lost it's fire (and was cut too short anyways to be worthwhile). The infamous Yeti. The countless non-working Dinosaur effects. Sometimes they can't even get Hopper to work correctly. And are those nets still up under the Tree???

FIX all of that PLEASE and THEN we can consider having a celebration.

I've never been to AK for a morning opening but the calendar shows that AK doesn't open until 9:00 am on Monday yet the opening ceremony is at the tree of life at 8:40 am. Does anyone know how a non-resort guest would get in that early? Extra magic is 8 am that day so is that the only way to see it?

I didn't know that! Thanks for sharing!

Loved El Rio del Tiempo. Still like the ride, but not a huge fan of the changes. All they needed to do was change some of the film. :(

Honestly, if I knew how, I'd put a little pic of Joe Rohde in my signature with a teeny little heart by it. :)

and when you get the young designers in you get things like Legend of Captain Jack, the Country Bears butchering, and the Space Mountain refurb.

I don't believe this at all. The young'uns often are hungry and have something to prove. They aren't encumbered with the past, and thus bring some really fresh ideas. Not for nothing do most of the arts and sciences say that your best work comes when you are young.

The reason those attractions suck is because management didn't support it, either through budget or lack of ambition or disrespect for the audience. I fully believe a young designer could blow our minds if given the opportunity.

You know how I know this, because Baxter was once that kid. And Rohde. And Delaney, and so on and so forth.
