Disney Animation getting out of the "Princess" business

And PatF should have. Tangled will be a big deal. I attempted to meet her about 10 times over the course of 3 days in the MK last week. She had wait times over an hour to an hour and a half. And the movie is not even out yet. The lines almost reached the castle (bear in mind most rides were walk ons so it was slower days in the park). I never got to meet her. I have a feeling this one is gonna be a hit.

I hope you're right. What I've seen of the film looks amazing. As for that article...I kinda get the feeling that the writers took a heck of a lot of info out of context and crafted it into something they KNEW would be provocative and incendiary. At least I hope so. Catmull's Facebook comment was at least somewhat reassuring.

Yeah, I'd roll my eyes at racist America too.

Yes, all white people in America are racist. Speaking as a WASP who saw the
movie in the theaters and bought the DVD. The movie was good, but the
music wasn't standout. I remember watching the movie and thinking that's a
nice tune, but when I was outside the theater I couldn't remember any of the
words. IMHO the music is half of what makes a Disney animated movie a
blockbuster and tPAtF didn't have that stay in your memory song. The music
was nice, but not stay in your head great. With all of that said, I repeat: I
liked and enjoyed the movie enough to buy it on DVD.

This rumor is false! Read this message from disney's facebook page!

A headline in today’s LA Times erroneously reported that the Disney fairy tale is a thing of the past, but I feel it is important to set the record straight that they are alive and well at Disney and continue this week with Tangled, a contemporary retelling of a much loved story. We have a number of projects in development with new twists that audiences will be able to enjoy for many years to come. - Ed Catmull

Are people missing that I posted this on the first page, the very first reply?

And music is personal preference. PatF soundtrack is the only Disney soundtrack (not counting the Official Disneyland Soundtrack) that I have on my very space-limited Phone/MP3 player, and I never skip past one of them when I'm in shuffle mode. Personally, the movie, and the soundtrack, is one of my favorites in the entire history of Disney Animation. But, that is my opinion. No one else's is more or less valid than mine.

BTW, since one of the first posts on here pretty much shot down the theory that Disney was making no more princess movies, can someone give us a DisneyRoks style "Thread Closed"? Ha!

Disney will be in the Princess storytelling business for as long as they make money. If they stop making money, they will be shelved, for a while, until they find a nice revival a few years down the line and make even more money.

It's a badly written story. The factual takeaway is that Disney has no fairy tales in the works for the "foreseeable future." I'm sure that's not unprecedented. (As I pointed out earlier, the company has gone 30 years between notable princess movies before.)

They thought they needed something bigger to make the story worth reading, so they tried to paint a short-term production outlook into a seismic shift in the company's product. It only works if you think Disney has been churning out fairy tale movies every year or two since Walt was walking the halls.

Citing Winnie-the-Pooh and Buzz Lightyear as "evidence" of this "new" Disney is strange too...as if Disney hasn't had a diverse lineup of stories and characters (Zorro/Davy Crockett/Love Bug anyone?) for decades.

Yep, but very dumbed down choices. Especially New Groove. And for some reason no one wants to call Rapunzel, Rapunzel. Its like Disney refuses to use anything with the name.
Dont know about the movie yet but the soundtrack was dissapointing to me, again not a new classic Disney song to be had, I thought anyway.

Eisner is credited with rejuvinating the animation division with the Little Mermaid. However, one of the first acts of the "new" management team was to rename Basil of Baker Street "The Great Mouse Dectective", a generic title that went far to kill any interest in the movie. I also think "Tangled" is a stupid name arrived at by a committee of marketers.

I wouldn't be surprised if Disney had few or no princess- based movies in the pipeline, but I wouldn't take that as indication that they're "out of the princess business." It's just a cyclical thing.

So if princess based movies aren't thought to be a money maker right now, what does it say that the next big Disney animation film behind Tangled is . . .

I think that's probably market and delivery channel specific. I live in south Florida, and it's pretty much the exact opposite here. I see Tangled commercials quite frequently, but have only seen a handful for Tron.

It's not just commercials, but during shows on the Discovery channel IIRC they were showing full trailers for TRON and also there's been a lot of online ads for it, of course the TRONorail, the video game, the Iphone App, the Daft Punk soundtrack release with glow in the dark poster, the DCA nighttime parties, and probably more things I'm not thinking of.

That's not a Walt Disney Animation Studios film. It's a Disney film but it won't be counting towards the Disney Animated features.

ok - thanks for that clarification. All I saw was Disney, Walt Disney Pictures and Disney Digital 3D during the previews before the Harry Potter movie yesterday - that was the first I'd heard of that one.

I'm glad to see Disney is still blaming the box office gross of PatF on the word Princess being in the title. When really all it takes is for someone to say "Well you know Avatar (the #1 anticipated movie of the year) came out a week after our movie did, maybe that's why the box office wasn't so great, we'll just try again next time" But no, they try to put their blame on the most stupid things, I think this is worse then the whole "Well no one wants to see our movies because they're in 2d" excuse, but whatever makes them feel better about themselves.

Saw Tangled Screening

My family (husband, 2 daughters 4 & 7) went to NYC to see a Screening of Tangled on Saturday. I laughed the entire time and my 4 yo had belly laughs at parts. My husband thinks it was one of the best realeases in a long time. I really enjoyed it and thought the witch has the best villian song since Ursula. Disney=Princess!!:ROFLOL:

Notice the article say Disney is getting out of the FAIRY TALE business. Not Princess. That should be a red flag right there. Disney IS a Fairy Tale!

I don't know if I'd say it's worse. That's like saying, "Why paint when you can take a picture?" The "princess" excuse is still up there in terms of terrible excuses.

Tangled looks ok, but I don't see it doing too well. As far as PatF is concerned. I think it was just as good if not better then some of the animated movies of the 90s. It definitely was a breathe of fresh air with all this cg stuff out. And I think it did good enough to get it's props.

Tangled it gonna be big. I will be shocked if it's not. I wanted to meet the Tangled characters so bad in the World but the lines were longer that and hour and a half every time. The only reason why it MAY not do well is because Harry Potter is only going to be in it's second week...
