Disney Animation getting out of the "Princess" business

Just got back, this film was AMAZING. The only thing Tangled has in common with Shrek or any Dreamworks film is the CGI animation. This is one of the few times I can remember the audience applauding during the closing credits.

Glad you liked it! We can't wait. We are all going to see it tomorrow after dinner.

Of course not Lasseter, he's the best thing to happen to Disney in ages.

I'm talking about the directors of PATF who were the same directors for Little Mermaid and Aladdin, and Alen Menken doing the music (don't get me wrong, he's great but IMO a lot of his recent work like on Enchanted has been rather dull).

I apologize if I'm being redundant with my post. I haven't read much of the thread, but I feel the need to correct this. Alan Menken did not supply music for The Princess and the Frog. The score and songs were composed by Randy Newman.

Also, I couldn't look at John Musker, Ron Clements and Alan Menken as has-beens. The films and music they created is still enjoyed by millions of people even 21 years after they created it (in the case of The Little Mermaid). I'm not calling anybody as has-been if they can create something that ends up being timeless.

I don't like the word choice here. Washed up is what word comes to mind with dancing with the stars and the surreal life. NOT PatF. I really thought the movie was amazing too! I hate that it didn't do as well as they hoped though...

I agree. To me I could line up PatF with the Lion King, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast. They all felt like they came from the same time. Maybe it's because disney has released utter crap over the years, with the exception of every Pixar movie of course, that the first decent one is regarded as something amazing. The last movie like PatF released by disney that I can think of was Mulan, Hercules or something. They weren't as successful but had a similar feel. Maybe times have changed to where people don't want to be entertained with animated musicals. Or maybe they should give it another shot and make it more common again instead of following the trend.

I meant Alan Menken doing the music for Tangled, not PatF. I guess the way I worded it was confusing. I was kinda summing up both PatF and Tangled.

Well, maybe "has-beens" is a little bit of a strong word. What I mean to say is that they're past their prime and not as good as they used to be. I honestly think that if Disney wants to re-invent its self they need to look for fresh, young, new talent and not look to the past for salvation.

"Tangled" did turn out to be one of Disney's best movies the studio has put out in a very long time.

The movie was amazing and I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes a classic.

Early estimates for the movie's box-office are ahead of predictions...

If you're on the fence on going out to see it; I'd go... It's definitely worth it.

Gonna see Tangled this Saturday. Can't wait. How was the music? Are there any princess movies that still can be made?

First day numbers are in.

Disney's new animated film Tangled scored an impressive $11.5 million in its first day in 3,603 theaters nationwide, the highest pre-Thanksgiving Wednesday opening ever, bringing in more money than the previous holder of that record, Toy Story 2 back in 1999.

Assuming Tangled trends the same way Enchanted (Thanksgiving 2007) did - it's opening night of $10.5 million would equate to a $64 million 5-day opening weekend, a $166 million domestic run, a $276 million foreign run, and a $442 million total gross.

By comparison, Enchanted was $8 million opening night, $49 million 5-day, $127 million domestic, $212 million foreign, and $339 million total.

Of course, it's just preliminary guesstimates, but I bet Disney is internally doing handstands and cartwheels right now.

I really wish people would stop putting PatF in that category. Those movies were amazing, PatF was...not.

To you it wasn't and thats your problem. To me it can go along with the best of the best animated movies and beat a few of them. And thats my problem.

It's our Thanksgiving tradition that we see a movie on Thursday evening. So we saw Tangled tonight. I was mesmerized by the animation. The lantern scene was amazing. All I could think about was a future dark ride on the scale of Little Mermaid. And if the make the FL expansion look anything like that village in the movie, I'm there!

Tangled was pretty much perfect for me. I loved it. The music was great and the characters were so endearing! Overall, I liked Princess and the Frog better. However, Tangled shook up the formula JUST enough to really make it special. The entire time I was just thinking...this needs to be a ride! The animation was so gorgeous. I am glad we finalyl go a princess that does Art! I can't wait to see it it is a hit with the $$$. I really, really hope it is.

Bring on Brave and King of Elves!

I'll be the one to agree with you on that!

Don't worry, I do also understand how must feel to love PATF as my favourite animated feature is Pocahontas.

Anyway, great to see Tangled doing so well. Early estimates but Friday at $22 million and, using Enchanted's multiplier, on track to do around $73 million over the five day holiday period. In other words, WDFA has a big hit on their hands!
