with @Disney Irish reporting only 5 people in his screening and mine being nearly sold out has me wondering if Twisters is playing better in the middle of the country as opposed to the coasts…

It is, per Deadline's latest update:

"it’s not shocking to see the flyover states thundering to cinemas; Twisters highest grossing cinema to date is the Regal Warren in Moore, OK with more than $130K"

The problem for Twisters going forward is that it'll loose a lot of premium theaters to Deadpool on Thursday/Friday.

Ideally, theaters would have alternate screenings of each movie (especially 4DX), but I don't know how that's possible with pre-negotiated distribution deals.

Looks like Twisters actually did better than predicted with an expected $74.6 million opening weekend.

Universal now predicting an $80.5 million opening:

"UPDATED SUNDAY AM: Universal has called the domestic opening for the Lee Isaac Chung directed Twisters at $80.5M as we told you last night. That’s 60% ahead of the $50M+ that tracking was spotting."

Actuals on Twister. It really did excellent domestically. The summer really is putting in the work after all. I really don't know what was up with the "early summer" aka Spring. I think a cascade of movies people want to see is helping drive momentum.

That's just it, there's a string of movies that a broad section of the public want to see. And they are all good. And it looks like Deadpool will continue the trend. There was really nothing in the early part of the year that I couldn't wait for streaming.

It'll be interesting to see how big the fall off is in week 2 for this one. It's losing some 40% of its screenings (including all of the premium ones, as Animaniac suggested) near me.

Deadpool & Wolverine has a ridiculous 179(!) screenings at our 6 AMC theaters on Saturday alone. That's such a ludicrous number. For contrast, Inside Out 2 and Twisters both opened with a mere 104 screenings.

I agree it is a ridiculous amount of screens… I will see most type of movies from Blockbusters to small independent films…my favorite genre is the good film genre… give people more options….there are more people who are interested in more than just the latest IP blockbuster than some theaters give them credit for

I plan on seeing Deadpool and Wolverine on Sunday afternoon…. I checked the seating in our largest theater…. And there were only 6 seats purchased…. I think people will find seats who are interested

Buckle up! Quality and word of mouth aren’t holding back this one.

It could be front loaded, but I think word of mouth will pull out the full general public that has been fence sitting as of late.

For Twisters: “In the movie industry, the general golden rule is that a film needs to rake in about two to two-and-a-half times its budget to see any profit. With Twisters’ hefty $200 million budget, it needs to pull in around $400 - $450 million just to comfortably break even. But judging by the hype and early box office numbers, this blockbuster sequel might just hit the mark.”

DOMESTIC (73.3%)
$119,631,140
INTERNATIONAL (26.7%)
$43,500,000
WORLDWIDE
$163,131,140

I’m so confused. After initially resisting the idea, I really became convinced that Disney’s box-office slump was due in part to ideological opposition to the company, and then Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine (which I just saw) came along. Whatever the explanation, I’m glad we can (begin to) move on from some of the notions that have dominated these threads during the last two years.
