Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Thanks, Buford. I appreciate the reply.

I agree with that. I would probably only add that I don't think it's disproportionate if people choose not to watch the movie based on her comments.

After reading those comments I get what you're saying. They also seem more focused on her as a person and less on her comments/criticisms. "I don't like what you said so I'm attacking your character" feels wrong to me too.
Thanks for your response. It’s always a pleasure discussing things with you!

God those opening paragraphs are horrific. Not that anyone reads NYT anymore, but the text is exactly why people aren't seeing the film and what is wrong with hollywood and its supporters.

"Snow White no longer trills about a prince, true, but heteronormativity still has its happy ending. Huzzah!"

Yeesh. This is why people are beyond caring and are at the point of apathy.
Yeah, it’s a family movie based on an animated film generally made for kids. Giving props because the heroine isn’t defined by her relationship or proximity to a man but bemoaning it doesn’t go far enough because it still embraces “heteronormativity” makes this entire thing really tedious. If that’s an organic choice made by the character within the contours of the film, why is “heteronormativity” frames as a negative thing?

Activists are bringing a lot of baggage to this one. “It didn't go far enough!” Hey, good news, many more turkeys like this and there won’t be any Princess films, heteronormative or otherwise

Who “dragged” the Gunn thing out and why?
You don't remember? Gunn was fired by Disney because of Twitter jokes he made 10yrs years ago at the time. Both sides dig things up from the past regardless of race. It's been happening for a while now.

Again, I'm not saying race isn't an issue for some. There's definitely ignorant people out there. I just don't see that being the catalyst with Mackie. Winter soldier came out 10yrs ago and that was never an issue. People loved him.

Personally I don't think it was the catalyst for zegler either. At least not in the way that's being implied. Like it or not, right or wrong, the public will judge you based on what what you say, your opinions, publicly. And when you say things like she has, it's no surprise she's being dragged over the coals. It's like someone said earlier, death by a thousand paper cuts.

Of course it's sarcasm. People are sick of everything hollywood related be it the film, the people, the reaction, the reaction to the reaction being about anything but entertainment.
The sarcasm isn’t directed at Hollywood, it’s directed at the idiots relentlessly attacking the film. She explicitly refers to the attacks as “a dispiritingly familiar spectacle of bigotry and rank nonsense.”

We have a historical record.

The initial flurry of attacks on Zegler were racial and they remained so for quite some time until the attackers found and amplified the quotations about the original film.

Gunn’s comments were found and amplified by some of the most prominent Twitter commentators, individuals who now have a direct connection to the highest levels of power in the nation, as revenge after Rosanne Barr was fired for making racial attacks and refusing to apologize.

When the reality of history proves fundamentally incompatible with your views of the world, it’s not history that can or should change.

How about they shut up about the idiots and talk about the damned film?

You know why, as you do it here. They're more interested in crying and whining about things instead of the movie itself.

Saw this-

"Snow White doesn’t include one of the animated original’s most famous songs, “Someday My Prince Will Come,”"

SERIOUSLY?

Cracking Up Lol GIF

Did they put Kathleen Kennedy in charge of this film?

Random Late Nite Hot Take: The Supremes have perhaps the best cover ever recorded of "Somewhere There's A Place For Us". Look it up if you're a West Side Story fan!
I've gotta say, the pet shop boys cover is the one for me. Of course I'm partial to all those electronic 80's bands. So I might just be a bit biased.

So to you, this is all about her race and that people don't like her because of it? The way I see it is, yea it started with casting. But it sounds like you think if you didn't like the casting, it's because of a hidden, or not so hidden, agenda. We all know there's people on the Internet who do have that agenda, that's not new. But is that controlling the general public in your mind? Maybe it sways it some, I don't think so, but I don't really know. Call me naive, but most of the average people that don't like her, don't like her for the things she said. Not the color of her skin.

The initial attacks on Zegler were based on her race. Obscure comments she had made to the foreign press were dug up and amplified because of her race.

I don’t think you’re naive.

This is where the UK tax credit specialists and D+ shell game spinners start telling us this movie really only needs to make $350M at the WW box office to break even.

No, it needs 675M. I'd generally believe roughly that figure now unless Anthony (Deadline) also weighs in with a modified break even point. Which he is apt to do.

And look at that, Deadline, who I trust, has the highest figure of all so far!

The imposition that we (the shell gamers) are the ones flip flopping in the breeze is insulting. I've been nothing but consistent. Walter swinging in and making absurd statements that he "thinks" we've made is not consistent with the drum I've been beating for 10 years now.

I think it’s also worth pointing out there’s a difference between not liking a casting decision and not liking that person personally.

I hated the decision to cast Bailey as TLM but I don’t have any hard feelings towards her, if she was cast in a new movie tomorrow I’d have no reservations seeing it. I can’t say the same for Zegler, there’s actual animosity there, and thats not from the casting choice but because of her comments and attitude.

The initial controversy was surrounding the casting choice and towards Disney, it was her comments that turned that animosity towards herself though.
