This may be exactly it. Disney thought if it made a good movie, people would go to see it.

And yet if its a well reviewed movie that does well there will be excuses made by the other side as well, such as "paid reviews" and "people just saw it because of nostalgia" and any other number of excuses I've seen thrown around here for years when a Disney movie does well.

I'd agree the backlash was from a small percentage with the comments about the original film. Not so much with the political stuff. I know plenty of people who have no skin in the Disney race that have chimed in on it. And not just one side. That comment solidified the vocal minority of the Internet would be relentless. But I think there's a lot more than just them being vocal.

Something I don't think I've seen even mentioned in this thread... Have people expressed similar outrage over James Cameron's recent political statements? Is there any big move to boycott the remaining Avatar movies? Or is he, perhaps, too big to pick on?

I always say it's difficult for people to think outside their own experience, which is true for me too.
It seems this movie is directed toward kids and families. The people who don't like her political comments would have to not take their kids to a film they would otherwise see because of comments that have nothing to do with the film. That seems juvenile/petty to me, but again that's just my opinion.
If it's important for people to take a stand against the star's comments by not seeing the film, they won't see it. I don't get it, but as I said people are different.

Comments like this fudge the timeline and gloss over the fact that the anger towards her was already at boiling point well before she made her political remarks. Those remarks were pounced on to vindicate the outrage; they did not give rise to it.

I hadn’t even heard about his statements (which is telling given that pretty much all my celebrity news comes from this forum).
I could care less about reviews. Does it make money or not.
If yes then it’s a success, if no it’s a failure.

A lot probably will, a lot of others probably won’t, this could be the greatest movie ever made and a large portion of the people who don’t like her will never give it a chance.
That’s the problem with entertainment, with endless options no one needs to see anything so it becomes extremely easy to “boycott” something even if you never intentionally meant to.
Once the damage is done it’s impossible to undo it, all you can hope for is to minimize it.

If she doesn’t like it she can always step away from the spotlight.

I think it’s at step #9 in the process?
1. Movie gets announced.
2. Trailers get released.
3. Endless back and forth that the movie can't possibly be judged on 1:30 of a trailer.
4. Speculation mounts as good or bad press leaks out.
5. Some other detail of fragment of the movie leaks out. Usually, not good.
6. Queue commentary of "how about you wait until its released."
7. Movie is hailed as a critical...
For my own part I have no particular interest in seeing this, the first movie that has caught my interest this year is FF so I’m more of an observer of the SW proceedings.
Usually it goes something like this:Is this the part where we say money doesn’t matter and as long as one…”fan”…says it’s “good”…then disney succeeded?
…been at least a month since we rolled down that street

The news/tabloids/youtubers report on what get clicks, it’s more profitable to pick on disliked people.
I had not heard about any controversy so I googled it all I could find was he’s moving to New Zealand because he thinks T is destroying the US and he finds it horrifying… which is a fairly normal thing to say about a politician you don’t like, a pretty far cry from saying you hope people who voted for him never find peace though.
