Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Possibly of note: despite seeing tons of drama on FB posts from all the various Disney pages (to the point I’m noticing comments from the same people on different pages) when People Magazine posted about the movie - presumably reaching a more mainstream audience - I saw fewer hate posts, and more, “Why are they mad at this girl?” posts.

It’s possible the hate hasn’t permeated everywhere.

There were also a lot more comments about Gal and her politics/history.

If two different political sides are each boycotting one actress or the other, we have a problem.

What I don’t see is 13 year-old girls who want to go see this movie with their friends being told by their parents, “No, because one of the actresses said XYZ.“
I have a feeling 13 year-old girls could care less about seeing this movie. I think the age range is 4-8 year olds that love princesses and saw Moana 2.

Snow White's original VHS release in 1994 was a huge success. It outsold Jurassic Park. It remained one of the best selling VHS tapes ever (Disney or otherwise) by the end of the decade.

Many children of that time were exposed to it that way, or during the prior 1993 theatrical re-release (first ever movie to get a frame-by-frame digital restoration).
Being a child of the 80's, my first exposure to this great classic was through snippets here and there on Disney Channel. Seeing the Queen transform was first witnessed during the villain segment of A Disney Halloween TV special ("Disney's Halloween Treat"). Seeing her hands morph from normal human hands to claw-like definitely stuck with me as a wee little lad. I knew most of the songs, saw other scenes... the yodeling "silly song" dance was part of the Disney Channel Christmas TV special, a.k.a. Jiminy Crickett's Christmas. I felt like I knew this movie despite only seeing little bits here and there.

I also remember seeing this TV special on Disney Channel, which had the cool wicked queen song. (Starts at around 9:35)

Then finally I got to see the full movie once the VHS was released in 1994. While it's not a top 3, 4, 5... of my all-time favorite Disney animated features, I still enjoy it for what it is, and look forward to what's in store for this remake, for better or worse.

I’m not sure how much more people can expect from a 23-year-old actor.
I don’t think people expect “more” of her?…she just got herself is an S-Storm and you can’t do that with todays technology

It will pass…as all bad things do (except iger’s contracts he gives himself 🤓)

That looks like the Disney singalongs…they had some creepy people and bad dialogue in those 😎

Anyone know the deal with the spanish castle they say inspired snow white? I have a fair understanding of Snow White history but off thebtop of my head this is the first I've heard of this castle.

It’s a cool castle…but they must have gotten lost because it’s supposed to be in Deutschland 🇩🇪

No this was a stage show performed at Disneyland, which they filmed for this Disney Channel special. I really wish they had re-used that wicked queen / old hag song for MNSSHP villains show. It was so catchy, yet this show and TV special were the only times it was ever used that I know of.

That article/tour pitch is very weird and sounds like it was written with AI... there's also some interesting buzz on Tripadvisor of that website having claimed awards it never received. Anyways, within the 'article' are the following-

"Today at Tour Travel & More, we’re excited to share news that has thrilled Disney fans all over the world: the iconic Alcazar of Segovia in Spain has been identified as the inspiration behind the famous castle in ‘Snow White’!"

Identified by who?

"The Alcazar of Segovia, with its impressive architecture and majestic location, has been identified as the source of inspiration for Snow White’s castle. This beautiful castle perched atop a hill in the historic city of Segovia has left all Disney fans in awe of its uncanny similarity to the castle we all know and love from the Snow White movie."

Again, identified by who... and why are Disney fans in awe of its 'uncanny similarity'?

"The magic of Disney lies in its ability to take inspiration from real places and cultures and turn it into stories that resonate in the hearts of people of all ages. Discovering that the Alcazar of Segovia was the source of inspiration for Snow White’s castle shows us how reality and imagination can merge to create something truly unique and moving."

Who discovered this?

"It is not surprising that the Alcazar of Segovia was the inspiration for this iconic castle."

Says who?

"This castle, which has recently been crowned as the inspiration behind Snow White’s castle, is a must-see."

Crowned? By who?

"The revelation that Segovia’s Alcazar served as the inspiration for Snow White’s castle in the Disney films is a thrilling reminder of how the magic of real life can inspire the magic of the imagination. This discovery has added a new chapter to the rich history of fairy tales and has made the Alcázar of Segovia an even more special destination for travellers and Disney lovers."

Revelation? Discovery? By who? This article/tour pitch was posted on October 13th, 2024... did we Disney fans miss the announcement? Did Disney post something? Is there ANYTHING from Disney post 2000 that anyone can recall/find about this?

Doing a quick dig into articles from 2000 to 2024... I found these-

This article from March 2020 mentions this location... and seems to be nothing more than an AI image similarity... the article also mentions a relationship of Atlantis at the Palm to Little Mermaid... even though Atlantis didn't open until 19 years after Little Mermaid came out.....

This article from 2023 claims that "Disney has now substantiated this claim, acknowledging the Alcazar’s influence in the creation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ iconic castle, which premiered in 1937." and that "A survey conducted by The Walt Disney Company reveals that only 14 per cent of Spaniards were aware of the Alcazar of Segovia’s role in inspiring Snow White’s castle, although in Segovia, this figure is probably much higher."

So... do we have anything from Disney? Anything real? Anyone have a deep dive into Snow White pre AI online article? I'll take anything!

I was trying to give you something that wasn't from this year, wasn't from Disney, and wasn't tied to the movie just to show its known prior to this and not some made up thing.

Disney puts it in their own press release for that event -

"The Alcázar of Segovia, a medieval castle located in the city of Segovia, in Castile and León, Spain, was the inspiration for the castle that appears in the 1937 animated film “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.”"

She’s doing very well so it seems people like her just fine. Didn’t she win a People’s Choice award?
I don’t know if this is an act with you, or if you just have your head buried in the sand.

Is it a normal strategy to hide your beloved star as much as possible before the movie release ?

How about someone who isn’t completely unlikable?

That might have helped.
I think she was pretty likable when they cast her, or at worst people were indifferent because they didn’t know who she was, I can’t recall any controversial statements or red flags when she did Westside Story so I don’t think Disney could have possibly foreseen how disliked she’d end up to a lot of people.

I’m sure if they had a Time Machine, and knew then what they know now, they’d go back and cast someone else but how could they have known 5 years ago that casting choice would jeopardize the whole movie?

It’s a cool castle…but they must have gotten lost because it’s supposed to be in Deutschland 🇩🇪

The DL castle is based after the one in Germany, the Snow White movie castle is based of the one in Spain.
