Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

One other thing that stood out from this weekend's box office is the legs and staying power that both Migration and Wonka have. There's clearly a market and audience for family movies, but Turning Red was ignored by that audience.

What I find even more surprising is that Migration hasn't opened in Japan yet, but is likely to beat Wish at the global box office. That's stunning. Especially considering the importance and money and marketing that Disney put behind Wish as their big 100th Anniversary Movie! 🥳 And Migration seems like just a low budget, throwaway animated movie for kiddies on Christmas break.

Box Office as of yesterday, with Migration still not open in Japan and/or just opened this weekend in other foreign lands, and Wish still in 105 theaters in the USA.

Wish: Production $200, Marketing $100, Domestic B.O. Take $38, Foreign B.O. Take $71 = $191 Million Loss
Migration:
Production $72, Marketing $36, Domestic B.O. Take $66, Foreign B.O. Take $50 = $8 Million Profit

Box Office is finalized for Super Bowl Weekend. As per usual, this big holiday weekend was slow at the movie theaters. But there's a few things of note for Disney movies...

Namely, why on earth did Turning Red get 1,560 theaters??? It has almost no demand for it, and Poor Things lost 660 theaters this weekend. Did Poor Things have to give up those theaters so Pixar could put on their bizarre little public outreach process for these three movies that are already on Disney+ for free? A bizarre business decision, to be sure.

And then down to 17th place for Turning Red, and the other Searchlight movie...

With Wish in 33rd place, still hanging on to 105 theaters and still making more per theater than Turning Red...

'Turning Red' grossed $20 million during it's original box office run. Well, now 'Turning Red' has grossed $20,578,047 at the box office. See what a difference that made?? 😂

There's no market for that dreadful movie, but someone at Disney refuses to believe or acknowledge that truth.

Looking at the numbers, I hadn't realized Turning Red was released overseas in 2022. And assuming Disney gets a 50% take of DVD sales, it's not hard to figure out how much they've lost so far on this movie. In its defense, that was a boneheaded and shortsighted move on Charmless Chapek's part to send all these 2021-2022 movies to Disney+ for free; that's a failed strategy that Disney may never fully recover from.

Turning Red: Production $175, Marketing $0, USA B.O. $300,000, Overseas B.O. $5 Million, DVD $1 Million = $168 Million Loss

Why are you all so obsessed with Turning Red and its box office performance???
Maybe it's morbid curiosity about a terrible movie that (rightfully) bombed and has been available on Disney+ since it was released under $lappie but now has popped back into theaters, taking screens from other movies for no apparent reason? What's next, a re-re-release of The Phantom Menace??? Oh wait...

It's a bit like someone who doesn't follow football (American or soccer—take your pick!) constantly posting about scores and rankings.

(In case your question wasn't rhetorical, here's a hint as to his motivation: he would not be posting in this subforum if Disney were doing well at the box office.)

Why do you think it’s a terrible movie that rightfully should have bombed? I mean, not all movies have to be for everybody.

And here's a hint about what some posters are thinking. They wouldn't say a peep if @TP2000 was cheering Disney on.

Maybe we should change the title of the thread to reflect that only positive news is welcome here.
I get that news is news. That’s fine. But I don’t understand wanting a movie to bomb just because you don’t like it. There are plenty of movies and certain genres (like horror) that I don’t like and wouldn’t see. But I don‘t make it a point to go around hoping they fail because they’re clearly something others like.

Honestly, I'd prefer that the tribalism that has overtaken this part of the forum end altogether. I have no problem with negative news or opinions; it's the intention behind some of the posts that bothers me (and yes, certain posters have made their intentions very clear).

It doesn't feel all that different here from the old politics forum, which is a great shame in my view.

Why are you all so obsessed with Turning Red and its box office performance???

Because as a lifelong Disney fan I care for the ongoing health of the company, including its flagship movie studios.

And the decision to re-release in 1,500+ theaters the 3 Pixar Covid era movies that have been available on Disney+ for years is a very odd financial decision. It's costing Disney money to pull off this Emeryville Morale Boost stunt, even without the marketing money they didn't spend on it.

And after the disastrous box office year they just had, losing over $1 Billion in 2023, the last thing they should be doing is kicking off 2024 by throwing more money away.

Pixar should just admit this re-release strategy was a mistake and forget about it. 1,560 theaters?!?

Honestly, I'd prefer that the tribalism that has overtaken this part of the forum end altogether. I have no problem with negative news or opinions; it's the intention behind some of the posts that bothers me (and yes, certain posters have made their intentions very clear).

The solution to getting more good box office news in this box office thread is for Disney to start releasing movies in theaters that at least break even, or perhaps even turn a small profit. Can you imagine?! ;)

We could do what we did in the Reedy Creek thread and just ban everyone who knows what they are talking about from posting here. Then there wouldn't be an disagreement.

The solution to all this bad "anti-Disney" news is for Disney to start releasing films in theaters that at least break even, and perhaps even turn a small profit.

To fix a plethora of anti-Disney news, Disney simply needs to create some pro-Disney box office results.
Or, you can go find a new film company to like since you have so much venom for Disney. Turning Red is 95% positive on Rotten Tomatoes and for good reason. Poor Things has won all sorts of awards and is on track to win some Oscars as well. All of Us Strangers is absolutely phenomenal and the reviews reflect it. You have seen NONE of these films and yet you feel qualified to blab endless negative commentary on them and the rest of the Disney films you have not seen. It is quite extraordinary. I have a few other points I could make about your Disney hatred, but I don’t intend on getting a ban because of it, and particularly not on my birthday. But it would be quite refreshing if you would stop posting about films you haven’t even seen and have no intention of seeing.
