Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I'm seeing it tonight at 7PM, because....of course I am, LOL. (I think it might be one of these one night only "events" like they did with that Winnie the Pooh slasher movie, because I don't see any other showtimes.)
I think it looks better than the Winnie the Pooh thing…that one looked like some college roommates threw it together on a weekend… admittedly just going by the trailer…I never saw Winnie…I am actually interested in seeing this… though so far I don’t see any screenings near me

It's 60% positive on Rotten Tomatoes but a couple of the reviews are really good. I think this will still call for a couple of strong margaritas beforehand, lol.

If anyone sees it I need a review. I may be the test case. If I can convince the wife I will report back.
Yeah, I just saw it and there’s a reason this is only playing for one night. It is completely ridiculous but at least the filmmakers are in on the joke, which makes it a very fun time. There were only 8 people in my theatre but we were laughing hysterically from start to finish.

The premise is that a college sorority girl acquires a wild sloth from Panama in order to pose with it and get “likes” on social media in order to win President of the sorority. Turns out that the sloth is a complete murderous psycho and it goes on a killing rampage.

The sloth is a puppet of some kind rather than CGI and it never looks real at all, which makes the whole movie that much more ridiculous.

And don’t get me started about how the sloth learns how to use cellphones, swords, and guns.

I’m sure no one is going to see this but possible spoiler alert that it nearly kills one sorority girl but she barely survives, and the sloth gets in a car and drives it to the hospital to finish her off. It is hysterical.

And in the tradition of great horror villains, the sloth cannot seemingly be killed. There are homages to Halloween (when Michael goes crashing out the window and then disappears) and other horror films.

It is surprisingly well filmed and has a talented cast for something where the budget was probably two dollars.

Make no mistake, it’s basically midnight movie trash, but that’s what makes it a blast.

If you’re into this kind of thing and if it appears on one of the streaming services, give it a watch. Have a few cocktails beforehand.

PS -Here is the trailer:

While this sounds like it could be a really fun and memorable evening for the 8 of you, it can't be used as a business strategy.

Or at least it's shouldn't be used as one.

I posted this on the Pride thread as well, but tonight I saw BOTTOMS. It's really, really funny and has all sorts of good reviews over on Tomatoes. This is the "PG" rated trailer that doesn't really do it justice. Search out the red-band trailer. Also stars Nicholas Galitzine, who was the British prince in Red White and Royal Blue and he was Prince Robert in the 2021 Cinderella. Pretty unrecognizable here as the dumb American jock. He's prepping up to become a big star.

Shouldn’t be a problem finding a seat

He had mentioned last night in a post that has since been deleted… people have posted their opinions on movies such as Blue Beetle, Barbie, Oppenheimer, among others…. So he felt it was ok to talk about other movies at the box office generally speaking

I've never heard of this film. Is it a movie that has a Disney analog for it? That's generally how mentions of other movies go in the Box Office thread, as we compare/contrast current box office data it's helpful to have Disney or mass pop culture analogs.

Blue Beetle < Guardians 3, Ruby Gilman < Mermaid, Mission:Impossible > Indy 5, Barbie = Movie Of Decade, etc.

Is that why you’ve referred multiple times to Sound of Freedom?

When it became known to us that Sound of Freedom was originally owned by Disney after the Fox buyout, yes.

Sound of Freedom has made $181 Million at the box office, off of a budget of only $14 Million.

That is about $85 Million in box office profit that Disney kissed goodbye by not releasing Sound of Freedom themselves.

In a summer where Disney lost hundreds of million of dollars at the box office (summary coming on Labor Day), that extra $85 Million profit that Disney gave up from Sound of Freedom would have helped a bit.

come on you are creative… I am sure you can find an excuse to talk about Bottoms…. Just like you do about any movie you want to speak of

What's absolutely hilarious about that is I have just finished watching the trailer that Buddy posted.

Oh. My. Gosh. I had no idea. Sometimes you have to spell it out for me. But now, I'm dying. 🤣 🤣 🤣
