Disney adding a 300ft tethered balloon to Downtown Disney

This doesn't seem very inspired. OK, the balloon at DLP is nice enough but it's nothing great.

All in all, more effort needed!

We had one of these at a museum in downtown Baltimore. Note the past tense.

There was a severe wind storm that suddenly came up, and 15 people were trapped in the balloon basket for several hours in July of 2004. A sudden storm came off the water, and they couldn't retract the balloon. The basket was swung into the buildings.

I don't think I'll be going on the DTD one... It scares me.

(Edit: There were 15 people, not 16, sorry)

Thanks for the info. Remind me not to ride this thing when it opens! This balloon is a cheep attraction that you will find at a place like Fun Spot in Orlando. I can't understand why Disney will put this unsafe attraction in replace of cool night clubs.

^ It isn't replacing the nightclubs, it isn't replacing anything as a matter of fact. This is one of the first true additions we have had in awhile. It is going on The Westside out over the water.

Furthermore, accidents have happened on similar rides to the ones you ride at Disney. Just b/c it has happened to something similar doesn't mean it will happen with this one.

Personally, I most likely won't be going up in the thing. The reason why I won't is b/c I don't want to pay the money. It has nothing to do with similar rides having accidents. That is kind of a silly reason not to ride something, IMO.

Of course. It's not like Florida has sudden storms like Baltimore, right?

So what? Accidents happen all the time. Just b/c an accident occurs one place does not mean it will at another. If you lived your life b/c you went off what happened other places you probably would never leave your house. I remember reading about an 18 car pile up on the interstate I use to go to Disney. That fact doesn't stop me from taking that route when I go. Same holds true for this balloon.

And you want to take that chance?

I'm not going up in the thing, already said that. That said, just b/c it happened some where isn't justification to condemn something before it has even been installed.

Who knows, the balloon could become the new symbol of WDW. An icon for the whole resort.

Oh, so some other poor person will be up in the thing...great!

But I do like the Icon thing....If you look in the original concept art for DL there was a hot air balloon...Lemme grab a pic.

Meh. If Disney wants to do this, then its no big deal. DTD does need an icon of some sort. 300 feet is high, but people have been hurt on rides that don't go nearly that high.

I agree, but this ride will be held up by what looks to be a string and it can deflate. I'm a thrill seeker but this one is a bit much for me.:ROFLOL:Now the Great Orlando Wheel that will be built near Disney, I think that attraction looks a bit more safe to me for observation viewing.

What if it blows them away and they end up crashing on Mysterious Island and end up fighting giant stop-motion Crabs?

Disney has NOT thought this through.
